Macaroni & Cheese...

Do you serve mac & cheese at your holiday meal?

  • Of course! No holiday meal is complete without mac & cheese!

  • Sometimes. Depends on my mood and who is coming for dinner.

  • Never. Ever. Mac & cheese isn't "fancy" enough for a holiday dinner.

Always for one side of the family. Never for the other. (I have a nephew who is a *very* picky eater and mac and cheese is one of the few things he will eat. At least one item he will eat -- namely Mac/cheese, pizza, and hot dogs -- is served at every family function for that side, so Mac/cheese is a staple at the holiday table since pizza and hot dogs would be weirder and he's not a toddler... He's 11!)

My mil (who recently passed) always made her homemade baked mac & cheese for every occasion. It was always a hit with kids and adults.

But it's not a common thing where we live... she's the only one I know who did that.

I have to say, I'm really am surprised how many people have macaroni & cheese on their holiday menus, regardless of whether it is the homemade kind or not. Everyone in the family loves it, so maybe next year I'll add it to our menu and start a new tradition.

I voted other because it is not that it's not fancy enough, it just was never an thought of option.

Mac and cheese is a big deal in my family because we only have it when the whole family is together. My mom makes it from scratch and it's delicious.

Nope, Never. NOt because I don't think it is "fancy" enough, but simply because I can't stand the stuff. Yep I know, I am very strange. lol

I also would consider pigs in a blanket way more casual than mac n cheese

Me too. I definitely wouldn't classify them as "fancy". Different POVs have been interesting to read on the mac & cheese, though.

I make a fancy mac & cheese from scratch with chicken & bacon, with cheddar jack cheese. It was a big hit at Thanksgiving and I'm making it again tomorrow!

Here's a picture of it from Thanksgiving right after it came out of the oven:

Will you share the recipe please?

I am making Paula Deen's mac n cheese and spiral ham for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I only make it once a year at Christmas and my family loves it! :thumbsup2

I think it's got to be at least 20 years since I ate any, I know lots like it but personally

I voted depends. We might make it or not.

We are grilling steak this yr for C. day dinner. We are not having a traditional meal.

I usually make it for whatever holiday meal we have a baked ham. It is a baked mac and cheese with bread crumb topping that is hardly a simple/lazy dish to make. Most kids in my family actually won't even eat my mac and cheese because according to them it isn't real mac and cheese since it is made in the oven and you can cut into it and you don't spoon it from the po on the stove into a bowl.

This.

I've found that Macaroni and Cheese done this way usually ends up being not just more time consuming than most everything else on the table, it is usually the most expensive thing to make after the meats! Particularly if you do a four cheese (no, not velveeta), with the nicer cheeses especially, it becomes positively OUCH cost wise. Ever had truffle mac? Oooooooooo.

My mom's variety mac & cheese (i.e. velveeta/cheddar) for holidays was definitely more potluck suitable. Which is how our family did gatherings. But the type described above can hold its own on almost any table.

My mom always made the "baked" kind and no Velveeta, I still hated it, way to bland, but now you throw in the truffle mac, now I bet I could get into that.

Which cheeses do you like to use?
RECIPES please!!!
( I too prefer not to use velveeta!)

Mac and Cheese is NOT on our regular diet, for DH and I.
But a good hot delicious homemade mac-and-cheese sounds so good.
I need to make it more often for DS!

I occasionally whip up a mac-and-cheese in a pot.
(macaroni, butter, oil, deluxe real american, a little shredded mild cheddar, salt, pepper)

But I would love some good recipes for a better/fancier mac-and-cheese.

other here...

Before this past Thanksgiving, I would have voted "never, ever, ever." But we have a slew of new young people in our family. This year, one niece asked if I would make up a pot of it. Sure, why not?

I only started serving mac n cheese at holiday dinners in the last few years and only because my daughter doesn't like mashed potatoes and she doesn't like stuffing so besides green bean casserole there were no sides she liked in what I was making so I added Mac N Cheese. It doesn't matter if it is fancy enough because we aren't fancy people. I don't use cloth napkins.
