Do the kids still have to know how to do this? I know there is a new version out there, but is the dance still part of the deck dance party (or whatever its called)?
Do they STILL do YMCA?
God, I'm getting old......................

To answer the question... Do they have to? No. The cast members never hold a gun to anyone's head and say "Do this or you're off the ship."

Do they? Odds are yes. Most kids know how to do it. I've seen them adapt it to songs that aren't even Macarena.

As for YMCA, not a clue. TBH I never paid that much attention to the dances at the deck party - we're hanging on the deck above the pool enjoying the sights around us and not in the mosh pit that is the pool deck.

just to be clear:

I didn't ask if they have to do the macarena
I asked if they have to know how to do the macarena
I had hoped I implied that they would want to participate and would they need the macarena in their dance arsenal
obviously, you both inferred something different
obviously, I need to work on my communication skills....and my mad dance skils
girls like guys with skills

@wcw57: At the deck parties (Sail Away, Pirates), they always have the "do whatever I am doing dances". It seems to me that almost always we've done the YMCA (and yes we are getting old). They have not done the Macarena "straight up" for some time. It seems to me that there are elements of the Macarena, Electric Glide, The Hustle, Line Dancing scattered throughout theses parties.

BTW it was a good thing you didn't ask: "Do I HAVE to leave gratuities ..."

I understood what you asked ... Old guys need to stick together.

wait...what gratuities?!?!?!?!?
there are gratuities??????????!

:thumbsup2

btw, you don't look old in your photo

YMCA was in our sail away on 11/19 Fantasy cruise, and yep - I joined in too along with my kids! Last sail away where they did the Macarena was, for us, about two years ago. My kids know the Macarena. I don't know whether to be proud of that fact or not.

The problem with electronic communication is we can't hear tone. :)

Your question "Do the kids still have to know how to do this?" can be read either way.

It's pretty simple to pick up - I wouldn't stress trying to teach them beforehand. Heck, it's one of the things on GoNoodle I use in my classroom when the kids need to get the wiggles out, and my 6 self-contained class kids with autism have learned it just from a couple of times watching it. :)

the stress was killing me....now I can relax and just worry about packing lists and gratuities
:rotfl2:

But do make sure your kids practice saving deck chairs, in the front row of the theater after it has been declared an adults only area. That way, when they come to kick you off the ship, everyone can watch you do the maccarana on the way out.

</tone I'm trying to be funny. I'd better try harder because it isn't working. /tone>

I'm not getting old, but I have been on this merry-go-round for an awfully long time.

ETA: And yes, now that you mention it, the Merry-Go-Round is stuck playing Small World over and over. That explains a lot.

NO! No. Anything but that!

*sing* I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts. / Dee-dee-dee-dee, / There they are just standing in a row. /
Big ones, small ones, some as big as your head...

As far as 'do kids know how to do the Macarena'--I believe my kids learned how to do it in gym class, likely in elementary school, lol as both DD12 and 16 know it better than I do!

not sure but you better work on your limbo skills real quick, they don't even lift the pole, they just let you fall and break your back
