M. Space - It was all my fault!

I got a chance to ride Mission Space for the first time yesterday. OMG! Why didn't i listen to all of the 500 warnings? I totally admit that it was all my fault. I have every single ailment/problem that the warnings mention, but i still chose to experience it. I thought that since i can ride just about any other ride without a problem (upside down, flip rubble/bubble rides), then why not MS? Wrong! If you are claustrophobic, don't do it! After the control panel closed in on me, I was toast. Just sitting there in that tight space waiting to start almost did me in. I had to talk myself out of screaming, taking deep breaths all of the time. I should have known when i saw the barf bags, that this wasn't going to be like any other ride.

Once the ride started, the activity took my mind off of the tight space, so the anxiety decreased. I felt quite "unnerved" for about 1/2 hour, but it didn't ruin the rest of my day at the park. So, claustrophobics beware!

I am 37 years old and have been riding roller coasters (and any other rides I can find) since I was six. MS is the first ride ever that has made me sick, and I honestly thought I was dying when got out of that thing. We first went to WDW in Oct of 2004, and decided to try MS. I am not aware of having any of the health problems that they warn against. When the ride ended, it took every bit of effort that I had to make it out of the building. My parents were outside (they were smart enough to not ride) and when they saw me, they immediately asked me what was wrong. I was having chest pains. My arms felt numb. I was dizzy. I had a headache. My vision was blurred. I felt nausous. My mother made me sit down right there on sidewalk and I sat there about thirty minutes before I felt well enough to stand and move around again. Most of the symptoms were gone by then, but the headache remained. We had originally planned to stay in Epcot to watch Illuminations that night, but after another hour or so, we had to leave because of my headache. We went back to the resort and laid down around 5 to 6 o'clock in the evening and slept until the next morning. I woke up feeling fine and the rest of our trip was wonderful. I will never ride the thing again. I'm not even sure I will try to revised version.

I also had a terrible, horrible experience on M:S. At the time, I was 24 and completely healthy, so it shouldn't have affected me the way it did. I'm not claustrophobic -- being shut in the little capsule didn't really bother me at all. The movements and the G-forces on my body were agonizing, however. I couldn't enjoy the ride at all because I was trying to keep myself from vomiting all over the poor people sitting next to me. I managed to keep my stomach intact, but when the ride was over, DH had to hold me up til we got outside. I sat on the sidewalk for 30 minutes fighting dizziness and nausea. After a while I felt well enough to walk around and enjoy the rest of the day. However, later that evening, after a wonderful dinner at Rose & Crown, I got terribly sick again :guilty: and spent a long time in the restrooms in America. I felt totally destroyed and beaten up. My head was pounding, my insides felt like I'd been hit by a truck. My poor DH, he thought I'd died in there! He was about to send a random stranger in to look for me. The next day, I was absolutely fine. But I definitely learned my lesson that day -- M:S is NOT for me!

When we got off of M:S and exited through the gift shop, we thought sure we'd find "I Barfed on Mars" t-shirts.

Fortunately on my most recent trip to Disney I was very pregnant and thus exempt from riding MS. If it had not been for my "delicate state" than my husband would have convinced me to dose up on dramamine and join him. I am one of those who has gotten motion sick on just about every type of transportation available, so I'd hate to imagine what it would've been like for me!

I have been on a bunch of time, and never had a problem. Well I take that back... The only problem I had was the ride ended to quick. :)

I have planned on going on MS in Oct. but doing the "tamer" version. Would you still have symptoms with the tamer version? :confused3

The only real concern is the claustrophobia. If you can handle the motions of any other simulator, I wouldn't worry about getting motion sickness.

My understanding is the tamer verson did not move at all. You only watch the movie in the cab. I could be wrong.

This is exactly why I won't ride it. I am claustrophobic and I've seen pictures of how tight the seating area space is once the ride starts. The tame version is great for people who have to pass on the regular version for health reasons, but I still won't ride the tame version because I'm afraid I'll freak out over being trapped in my seat. Thank you for your post! It comfirmed that I should stay off of MS.

To the OP - you state that you have every ailment/condition that the ride warns you about - high blood presure, heart ailment, etc, and you went on? :confused3

To those that felt extrememly ill after riding - did you go to your physician for a thorough check-up when you returned home, to make sure you didn't have an undiagnosed condition?

After two deaths, what are people thinking?

I get motion sickness, but decided to give MS a try anyway. After riding it about noon time, I had to go back to BWV to lay down! I was nauseous and couldn't get my equilibrium back - kept "tipping" to one side. I slept for 4 hours then felt fine, but I won't ever go back on it.

Soarin is more my speed. I bypassed EE last trip due to my experience on MS, but I am going to give it try in December. I am okay on all the MK mountains and RNR....

DS6 and I are huge adreneline junkies and we won't go near that ride!

I rode it in december of 2004. I was 21 and health and never got sick on those amusment park rides that sqwish you against the wall. I asked a CM what she could compair it to and she told me that. BUT i should have known better. I have really bad ear problems- i've had them my inter life. So I go on the ride, It was okay and I was fine well in the ride. The best part was the three older people (maybe in their 60's) I went on with. They just kept laughing and having a grand old time. So I get off and almost fall over. The ride totaly messed up my middle ear which then made me feeling sick. I grabbed some sprit and went into one of the buildings and sat down in the air. I felt better after forty minutes, but fair warrning I think if you or your child had ear problems skip mission space. I would ride this ride again if it wasn't for my ear.

This thread illustrates why the "tame" version won't help...

Folks ride even thought they KNOW they shouldn't..... I don't think tame is going to help...

After two deaths, what are people thinking?

My experience was prior to the deaths. If I had known about the deaths before riding and came off feeling like that, I would have freaked out and made my family call for emergency medical help. As for being checked afterward, it wasn't necessary in my case. I know absolutely that I had none of the conditions. I had a complete cardiac evaluation about ten months prior because I had taken the diet supplement that had caused heart damage and deaths. When that all hit the news, my family physician insisted on sending me for the evaluation. I was told that my heart was perfectly healthy . As for the high blood pressure and other things, I have never and still do not have any of these problems.

How ever you bring up an issue that Disney needs to strongly consider. They can put all the advance warnings they want to on the ride, and it won't be enough. People who know they have those conditions and ride anyway get what they ask for if they have a negative experience. But how about the people who do not know that they have any of those conditions. Then there are the people like me, who absolutely do not have any of those conditions, and still have a very negative physical reaction to the ride. I think that since Disney knows that their ride can cause injury to people who do not know that they are in danger, they owe those people a duty to protect them. I think that if they do not find a way to make their ride safe, it should probably be closed. I realize that this is why they are now offering the tamer version, but the vast majority of the people who board that ride have not had cardiac evaluations recently and do not know if they may have a health problem and do not know that they need to ride the tamer version. That means that the ride poses a risk of death to every person who boards who has not had a complete medical evaluation clearing them of these conditions. I just think that this ride may be too much.

It sounds like we had the about the same physical response to the ride. Are you aware of any physical condition that may have contributed to your problems? Did you ride before or after the deaths?

scratching her head here.....

have ridden MS at least 5-8 times...no problems whatsoever..

43 here..hubby 45...son 14..and son 10

me..history of ulcers...and alot of arthritis (from being a gymnast in my early years...) Hubby has had major back problems in past. Older son had major ear problems as a small child.

son 10 won't even ride Space Mountain nor RnR Coaster...says they are too scarey for him....refuses to ride

he totally enjoys MS...?

none of us were disoriented...sick or even tipsy....?

believe me..we do not have stomachs of steel...(nor abs for that matter..;)

E...:confused3:

I'm just starting to hear of this "tamer" version of MS. Do you feel less of the G-force feeling? I have been on this ride twice and both times felt the severe pressure on my chest. I do not have health issues, but was now wonder. I had minor surgery in the fall. The EKG enough for the cardio doctor to pay a visit. I was surprised when he said I had a minor infraction, yet I NEVER had any problems or symtoms. It wasn't until months later that my DH reminded me of the feeling I had the second time I went on MS. The pressure on my chest was enough to know it would be my last time on the ride. Thankfully, I didnt' have any pains or reprocucions. My last EKG and Echo gram were fine. I still don't know what that "minor" infraction was all about.

I do not have any physical conditions other than mild hypoglycemia (I can't imagine how that would contribute to feeling ill after M:S) and I do get a little motion sick sometimes, usually on long car rides or during major turbulence in a plane. Maybe I should have realized that I shouldn't go on, but I didn't think it would be anything to worry about. I go on crazy roller coasters all the time with no problem.

FTR, I rode before the deaths occurred. When I heard about them, it honestly didn't surprise me very much.
