Lysol

Everywhere we travel we bring a can of Lysol with us and spray the entire room upon arrival and several times during the week (past experience with Norovirus). We usually pack it in the checked bags, then have to wait for bags to be delivered to spray the room. We are flying in the night before and wondering if I can take it out of my checked back and carry it onboard on my carry on. Will this be a problem getting the aerosol can through security at the port? I wouldn't think so, but just want to make sure. FYI for those germ a phobes, we also carry travel packs of disinfectant wipes onto the plane and wipe down seats, armrests, pull down trays etc before we sit. We get a lot of strange looks, but have yet to get sick since starting this routine and recently we've seen others doing the same thing.

From one germaphobe to another, this made me chuckle because my Chlorox Peroxide wipes that I ordered online just arrived today! I used to use Lysol wipes, but these kill germs and viruses, including Noro, much faster. :thumbsup2

Do you find the peroxide wipes cause damage to surfaces or clothing ?

I know that is a danger with the bleach wipes, but wasn't sure about the peroxide wipes.

Thanks,

SW

We travel with Lysol wipes as well. After we spent 4 out of 7 days of a WDW trip vomiting I am SO paranoid about germs when traveling. A can of Lysol may be quicker to do the whole room with, I may need to keep that in mind.

Thoughts....
  • I think wipes are more practical.... aerosol would not work well with a flight. What do you do if you have extra stuff in the can after the trip? How do you dispose of the can? If you throw it in the ship trash.... it can cause an explosion when crushed.
  • What's worse than the disease? The chemicals you are introducing into your cabin where you will be sleeping/snorting. Big issue if you don't have a balcony. When I go on a cruise.... I don't plan to be sniffing Lysol. The less chemicals.... the better.
  • your stateroom is cleaned twice a day.... it's cleaner than most homes
  • your stateroom is likely cleaner than the public areas... you are not likely going to spray or wipe outside of the cabin
  • consider getting yourself one of those affordable little blacklights. It helps find dirty areas where cleaners may have missed. A spilled drink on the side of furniture or walls is hard to see. The black light quickly finds these problem areas and I can leave a note for the cleaner to spot clean that area. I travel with a blacklight all the time to check hotel rooms before I unpack.

The Clorox hydrogen peroxide wipes do not damage clothing as far as I am aware - they are not like bleach wipes. Lysol wipes do not kill Norovirus, Lysol spray does. I prefer wipes as the smell from the spray chokes me! Wipes are also very convenient on airplanes especially these ones as the surface does not need to stay wet for 10 minutes to disinfect like Lysol does - these work in 30 seconds - 2 minutes.

I have often thought about getting a black light, but the thought of finding mystery stains around a bed I am about to sleep in would keep me up all night!

If you look at the Lysol site, it says after you spray the surface has to stay wet at least *10 minutes*. I don't use Lysol but my mom did (when I lived with her I was sickly; now that I am an adult I'm not...hmm), and when you spray Lysol it dries much quicker than that normally.

You *could* simply *wash your hands* before putting your hands to your face. Super-easy way to stop the spread of noro to yourself.

Even the Lysol and Lysol-positive sites say that the wipes don't work on norovirus.

Besides wiping the cabin we also wipe down everything as soon as we get on the airplane to the cruise.

Thanks everyone.

We also carry those sanitizer things, we each have one that hook onto a belt loop, purse strap etc and we sanitize like crazy throughout the day.

We actually use Chlorox wipes on the plane, and Lysol spray in the room. The spray does stink, my daughter and husband leave the room because she can't stand the smell, but worth it in my opinion.

Yes they do clean the room, but I wonder how well? One time we found a chocolate smear on our bedspread when we first got to the room, it was very obvious, so it makes me wonder. I'm sure some of the staff are very good and careful, but are they all? Also, when my daughter got the Noro on our first cruise, the ship doc said he'd list it on the records as sea sickness so he didn't have to quarantine us!! I couldn't believe he said that!

Anyway, glad to hear I can carry on the can of Lysol and not wait for my luggage to arrive.

Oh, and we leave rest of the can behind, leave it in the bathroom, not sure what the staff does with it, use it or dispose of it, but I'm sure they have some safe method.

We get the sanitizer wipes from our local Hospital, they seem to cover more bacteria and vinous than anything we have found in stores or on line. When we first started wiping down airplane seat area we would get a lot of "looks", now we normally see people telling their travel companions they should have brought them. We also take an airborne or vitaC when we fly because of the enclosed air circulation. Someone on the flight always seems to be coughing or sneezing, really prefer not getting sick on vacation. Last month for our Food and Wine trip, BiL, who does not fly with us, was a few rows in front of someone who decided to fly with a cold or flu and on the 3rd day started coming down with a virus. Dsis started taking daily vitaC as soon as they reached resort and did not come down with it, can not of course say that is why.

On the ship we normally wipe down the areas the stateroom host may not pay particular attention to such as the drawer pulls, closet door handle, inside drawers and door handles, they do a really good job cleaning and their disinfectant is geared for cruising.

Not all hand sanitizers kill noro. There are some, but the most common ones available are not effective. You are better off using soap and water and thoroughly washing your hands.

Plus, hasn't triclosan (the main ingredient in most of those insta-sanitizers) been proven ineffective (and I think banned from further sale) just in general?

I know triclosan was in the anti-bacterial handsoaps and that has been banned. My understanding was that the anti-bacterial soaps weren't any more effective than regular soap and they were helping bacteria develop resistance to cleaning agents. Most hand sanitizers have alcohol as the active incredient.

There are two different types of Clorox wipes. The ones you buy from the grocery store do not kill Norovirus. The Clorox hydrogen peroxide wipes are hospital grade and need to be purchased online - they kill Norovirus in 3 min. If you have the hydrogen peroxide wipes, you would be much better off cleaning the room with those than with the spray.

Here is an interesting experiment done by a biochemist on how well different household cleaners kill germs:

http://www.stopthestomachflu.com/Home/which-cleaning-products-kill-germs-the-best

As you can see, Lysol performs very poorly when it come to killing germs and the toxic fumes and residue left behind are very dangerous, especially for children:

I don't do anything other than wet ones before meals if I can't wash my hands...like on a plane sometimes it's a pain to get to the washroom once the food is delivered onto the trays....but I never get sick on any of my travels. (BUT I am a BIG proponent of hand washing)
But it's probably because I've worked in hospitals for 25+ years and have been exposed to everything under the sun. My immune system is nothing to scoff at...pirate:
