We are driving from CT to FL in April.

8 of us.

We can rent a plain Ford passenger van, $1k for 10 days. No bells or whistles.

Has anyone rented a luxury/conversion van? They seem hard to come by. And probably expensive...?

I don't know if it's still the case or not, but one of the dealers around here used to rent conversion vans. Might check with one in your area that stocks them in high volume and see if they have any for rent. I agree it would be nicer than the church-bus style 12-15 passenger van. The only thing is a lot of them are only 7 passenger, so that could potentially booger up the works :(

I'm in CT too and driving down next week. I did look around for those but the only places that had them were out of NYC. I'm not near there and I don't think they include mileage.

I'm renting a Suburban that seats 8 from National. I think they are a bit more appointed than the rental vans, but I'm not sure.

Suburban will likely have rear AC while the big van may or may not. A bit small for 8 people though IMO. The 3rd row will be a bit cramped, and the cargo area with all three rows in would be great for 4 or 5 people. But, could be a bit tight with luggage for 8.
