So...last year we found that we were really tired of the options at the two snack bars for lunch at HHI by the end of the week. Yet, we plan to stay at the resort and "play" for most of each day. I'd also like to save some $$ and plan to buy as many groceries as possible at home and take them with us. We'll go out for dinners.

So, I am trying to think of lunches that I can pack that won't spoil in the sun, but are a bit different then the same things we eat at home every day (we'll take a little soft-sided cooler...and we'll have our "mugs" for drinks). I'm also bringing a larger cooler in the car....so I could store some food if I make a point of keeping it iced up.

We're booked for a studio, so we don't have as many options for cooking as we would with a one-bedroom. I'm also somewhat limited for refrigerator space with a studio fridge.

I'm thinking:

cold-cut sandwiches (which is usually what we have at home)
PBJ
Swiss Cheese and Red Pepper
Really would like to do chicken salad---but afraid it would spoil.

Do you think I could reheat hotdogs wrapped with crescent roll dough (that i'll make ahead of time) and pack them for lunch in foil to keep them warm? The kids don't get to eat a lot of hot dogs at home--so this would be a treat for them.

Any ideas?

I think using the grills would be a good option. Grilled chicken you can eat cold or add it to a salad.

We are just back from HHI and we stayed in a GV but we used the grills twice. We grilled chicken, hot dogs, corn on the cob, I made nachos, my sister made mexican food one night.

We always ate breakfast in and with a big group, we didnt do any restaurants. We took snacks and drinks to the beach and ate when we got back.

HTH!

Back today we ate all lunches in and two dinners. I and my dear sister in law made the lunches in the room and we carried them to the pool (once we ate in shifts). We did tacos, chicken salad, tuna salad, bbq pork, ham and cheese and turkey and cheese. We did eat out some and really enjoyed the early birds at Kurama and Marley's. Also ate at The Sea Shack - early lunch on our check out day, and breakfast at Harolds. Found a great inexpensive place for mexican called LaHacenenda (SP?) behind Staples - near Kurama.

These are great ideas....can you tell me more about the Early Birds? Also, what was the Sea Shack like (prices, etc) and did you do Star Spangled Tuesday? Do they still do this? How much was it?

Thanks!

P.S. I assume HH still does the "mugs". Do they still have nice HH ones or have they switched to the same old YOMD that they have at the other resorts?

Yes, they still have the mugs, marked by the year with the same pic of M&M at the resort, but they are now the taller ones that fit in a cupholder. We bought ours in March. Hope they have some left for you as they usually tend to run out before the year is over.

Go to hhidining.com and you can find the menus for all the restaurants. Kurama has a full dinner including soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, fried rice and chicken teryiaki for 12.95. Marley's had about 8 things to pick from including beverage and salad for 14 - a really, really good value!

Good call with Harolds. We are lunch there one day and it was awesome. Very laid back atmosphere, reasonably priced, and easilly the best burger on the island!
