Hi all!
This is week 2 for DD in first grade, and I have been putting a handwritten note on an index card in her lunch daily. It's such a hit, she looks forward to it everyday. I am starting to run out of ideas, anyone else have any ideas for notes? I would like to start a big compilation of notes and poems, riddles, jokes, etc.

#1 You are our star! Hope you have a bright and shiny day! (Picture of a star)

#2 You are sweeter than a honey bee! Hope your day is buzz-y and fun! (Picture of a cute bee)

#3 Sending you love and hugs! Can't wait to see your smile when you get home! (XOXO)

#4 You are the COOLEST kid we know! Have a GREAT day! (Picture of an ice cream cone)

Riddle #1: What runs but never walks? A river!

Riddle #2: Why was the bee's hair sticky? He used a honey comb!

I am making these up in advance on unlined 3x5 index cards and putting them in an index card box on the kitchen counter so they are ready to be popped in the lunch box each morning. Anyone else have any creative ideas?

Well, my son just started Kindergarten and doesn't read yet so I've just been putting goofy faces drawn onto a napkin LOL. He only went 2 days before they shut down schools for Fay. He goes back tomorrow

What a great idea!!

Subscribing, and will try to come with up with some to post later.

This is such a great idea. I will have to try to think of some lines....in the meantime I am going to copy yours!! :-)

How about putting a question or riddle that maybe she can look up at the Library or ask a teacher, make a new friend? So say you put one in there that says "Try to make a new friend today and ask them their favorite color" or "What is on the bulletin board in the Library" when you know it's her library day. Or put in riddles that you hold the 'answer' to until she gets home....or put in a riddle and an answer and tell her to share it with 2 friends after lunch? Or things like "How many red shirts do you spot at your lunch table?"....stuff like that....maybe make them a bit harder when she gets older?

I used to love those little .99 cent Hallmark cards when mine were in school, I'd slip them in their backpack or agenda and they'd find them later. They also sold some really cute Post it's one year at Hallmark that had some cute saying already printed on them, and you just put a post it on something every day for them :) Oh and they also had these other ones at Valentines that were called 'little hugs' or something and they were little hearts with arms. There was a message on each heart, and the arms folded over the message so when they unfolded the 'hug' there was a sweet message :) Might be something you could re-create :) with some red, pink or white cardstock?

Oh and one more idea :) When mine were little we had compliment papers too. I even did one for my husband. I sat down one day and typed out 100 different things that I liked about each of them and then cut it in to strips. I would let them take a strip out of their jar every day. They weren't really 'mind breaking' compliments, but simple things. Such as, you make me laugh, or I love the way you say sandwich, I think it's cool how you decorated your folder or you have the neatest handwriting...etc.

Great thread...

My dd's are older and I have gotten out of the habit of putting notes in the lunchbox - mostly because they pack their own lunch :) However I am definatly going to slide something fun in - at least a few times a week.

I do hit the dollar store often for fun napkins and they like that. Usually something seasonal, with a fun design or just or a bright color to cheer them up.

I think since my dd's are tween/teen I will do the compliments - I am sure they need a boost by lunchtime.

I stick knock, knock jokes in my boys lunch boxes. Thank goodness for the internet! It's an endless supply of silly jokes :) This is a great thread. I doubt the kids will remember exactly what was written when they grow up just how it made them feel. And that's the important part.:thumbsup2

Great ideas!! Last year in 4yr old preschool, since he couldn't read yet, I awould put post-its in his lunchbox, sometimes with our home or cell phone number, address, simple words like "dog" or "cat" with a picture of the animal, or 'mom" or "dad". It will be great to add more cards/post-its as he starts learning to read.

Oh, I'm LOVING these suggestions already! Well, I made a few more today:

#1 A joke for you to make you laugh: Why did the cookie go to the doctor? He was feeling CRUMMY!

#2 A new riddle for you: What falls without getting hurt? RAIN! Have a great day!

#3 Hooray for you! You are so very special and we love you!

#4 Hope your day is GREAT! Try to make a new friend today! I can't wait to hear all about it!

#5 Here's a joke to share with your friends today! Where do you put a loud dog? In the BARKING lot!

#6 I am so proud of you. Keep up the great job you are doing in school!

#7 What did the salad say to the fridge? Close the door, I'm dressing! Have a wonderful day!

I love putting little notes in my kids lunchboxes, and my kids still ask for them at 9yrs old! :goodvibes
I usually write little notes of encouragements, and praise, have a great day, activities planned too.
Last yr I surprised the in their lunchboxes with HSMusical on Ice tickets for the following morning. They loved it, and it was friday, so I think they were ok with a little extra excitement during the school day;)

Here are a few more jokes for the list:

What kind of animal plays baseball? ------ a bat

Where do books sleep? ------- under their covers

What kind of bull has no horns? ------ a bullfrog

What do get if you cross a worm and an elephant?
------ very big holes in your garden

If I am flipping through a magazine and see a picture of something she likes, I cut it out and put it in her lunch. Disney things of course, Hannah Montana, swimming, etc. I saved some Olymic swimming pictures to put in too.

Rachael is 7 so she can read, but I will sometimes cut a comic out of the newspaper. Sometimes just a "Tonight we are going to go to Friendly's for dinner!"

This is a great thread!! I put a note in DD's lunch on her first day of pre-k and when I was packing her lunch for the second day she asked what her note was going to say. :)

I love the idea of little jokes - she loves those!

Since our DD just started kindergarten and can't read yet, I've been putting stickers in her lunch box. It's so cute to see her get off the bus with stickers all over her shirt.

I got my girls a coupon booklet from Halmark cards and it has tons of neat things in it like "This coupon entitles you to an extra hour on the computer" or "This coupon entitles you to pick what's for dinner", all sorts of neat ideas.

I like to slip one or two of them in my daughter's lunch box and since she never knows when I'm gonna put one in her lunch box it keeps it exciting.
