luggage weights how do I know???

I was just informed that our luggage can only be so much weight and if its over the reccommended thenits $65 extra . I don't know how to properly weight it and how much of weight per suit case and carry on?? Any one please help me....

weigh yourself on the scale, then pick up your packed suitcase and weigh both of you together and then deduct your weight. The limits will vary by airline, so check the website or call and ask, Good luck!

We saw someone whose bag was over by 10 pounds when we went to the airport with my niece (she came with her 3 yr old by herself, so my DD and I went to the airport with her to help her until she got everything checked).
The family had 2 suitcases that were 10 pounds each. They were given plastic bags and told to fill the bags until they had 10 pounds.

We always pack an empty duffle bag in the suitcase. If our luggage ends up being too heavy we can throw stuff in there and check the bag. Also a great to have for the return trip for the extra's you buy while at Disney.

We were 8 pounds over on the way down to Disney (Delta) and ended up paying $25.

On the way home, we were over, but I did some "creative rearranging" and crammed 7 pounds of "stuff" into other bags.

How on EARTH can you possibly cram that much stuff into a suitacse?!?!

I've never had mine weigh more than 28 pounds!

If you're putting more than 50 pounds into a suitcase, you're seriosly overstuffing it in which case it could easily pop open in transit, or if it gets selected for inspeaction, TSA might not be able to get it all back in.

Better off to jsut pack lighter, or use an additional bag. You can leave the rock colection at home for a week, I'm sure it won't get too lonely LOL!

Because 300 passengers with an additional ten pounds each is 3000 pounds, which uses more fuel and can create logistical problems with having to offload some cargo because they are overweight.

I guess we must have had some heavy stuff in there b/c I still had plenty of room to put additional stuff, and the bag wasn't bulging at the seams. The lady at the counter recommended taking out any toiletries (already did that, as they were in the carry on), so I'm not sure what was really weighing us down.

Do you offer some sort of packing class? I can't imagine my bag weighing only 28 pounds - unless I only took hair and make-up products with me.

LOL. sounds like my make-up/haircare bag. Funny thing is when I get there I never wear make-up and put my hair in a ponytail
2 years ago I bought this huge Samsonite suitcase and ended up paying about $100 extra because it was way too heavy. Boy, DH was not happy about that one.

I travel quite often and I have my packing down to a science. I wish I was as organized in my real life as I am in my travels.

Very rarely does my suitcase exceed 30 pounds and that is when I am carrying handouts for work.

The easy answer about why do they charge, is because they can. I can't believe the suitcases that I see people lugging around. They have to draw the line somewhere or it would be even worse.

OK, here's my packing list:

Makeup case, stripped down to leave all that extra junk at home--trust me, you don't need four eye shadow compacts and seven lipsticks on vacation.

Toiletries in two cases as follows:

1. Small case that goes in carryon with deoderant, toothbrush/paste, brush, travel size bottle of hair gel, sample packets of my face wash and cream. (I use all Jurlique prodcuts and am not shy about asking the girls for packets of samples when I go in for a facial or to buy product. They are perfect to tuck into a small carryon)

2. Case in checked bag with anything else I "need" such as body wash and poof, shampoo and conditioner, razor, etc. All are in travel size bottles that I refill from full size containers as needed. I also save almost empty tubes of face cream and such--they take up a lot less space and if I finish it I throw it away and use the smple packets.

I wear a pair of closed toe shoes, long pants, and a twinset all in natural fibers.

For clothes I pack lightweight mix and match. I add one pair of dresy shoes/sandals and one pair of sandals for everything else. Shoes are notoriously heavy. I don't overpack my clothes, I'd rather do a load of laundry!

My camera and laptop are in my carryon.

Because not only is the weight in an airplane needs to be evenly distributed and extra weight leads to extra fuel leads to extra cost in tickets.

Plus, baggage handlers have to haul these baggages by hand. Think about how much they have to haul in a day? I'd get pissy if I had overweight baggage that could potentially give me a backache or rip my arm off.
