we have never driven before and will not have way overloaded bags but is there a baggage weight limit like on planes? I know someone has to be able to throw it on top of everyone else’s fragile stuff but getting ready to pack and want to make sure i don’t need to weigh the bags.

No there is no weight limit. Just be mindful of the weight because people will be handling your luggage from the port, to the ship and to your stateroom and back again.

From a 2012 Disney Mom`s Panel post:

Here are the luggage guidelines for Disney Cruise Line:

Each Guest in your party is allowed two pieces of checked luggage that does not weigh over 50 lbs each. Each Guest is also allowed one carry-on bag that should not be bigger than 9x14x22.

I don't think I've ever seen a report of those limits being enforced.

They don’t weigh your luggage. Ever. No issues. I’m sure the above “guidance” was to try and discourage people from bringing a ton of items.

I agree. There are no limits, but since overweight luggage can increase injuries to employees handling the luggage, I view it as polite to try to not exceed the 50lb weight limit that the airlines use. But if you exceed it, there are no consequences. You will still get your luggage onboard and you won't be charged any fees for overweight bags.

I don’t plan to put a ton in there but if I have 55 in one and 42 in another I am just glad to know I am not opening them to balance the weight. Hope to not be close but don’t think that is possible with my bunch!

I have to tell you that a 50lb bag is hard for a normal person to move. So you’ll pretty much know if it’s in that range. I mean, you can drag it, but getting it into your car to head off to the port will be somewhat challenging. My ex is a big strong guy, and heavy luggage was awkward even for him.

At one point we were allowed 75lb bags by United, and we tried, but couldn’t stuff our bags heavier than 55 or so.

In other words, I doubt you should worry about this.

I know someone has to be able to throw it on top of everyone else’s fragile stuff

But that was hilarious.

The blog post is technically correct as there are luggage limits in the terms and conditions on the DCL website but we have been cruising since Day 1 of DCL's existence and I have never, ever, heard or seen any issue with luggage amount or weight. Been on this board since forever and also never read any post that mentioned they had an issue with their luggage wait being questioned.

On my first Panama Canal cruise (two weeks) I thought I needed two suitcases to fit all my stuff since it was a long cruise.....what a huge pain for one person to have two full sized suitcases (and a carry on). I don't know what I was thinking. Yes, two are allowed per person but there was no way to handle them logistically. Now it does not matter how long my cruises are I still pack the same one suitcase. Just add more or less to it depending on the cruise itinerary and general weather predicted (like Alaska I had more bulky clothing).

Go forth and pack.....

Overweight luggage can also increase injuries to owners of said luggage handling it. While it's most likely that you'll not have to lift your luggage and can wheel it everywhere, there may be the odd time when you have to carry it up or down stairs or have to lift it. I cannot count the number of times I see people in airports hauling huge bags which are obviously very heavy and they are very cumbersome to deal with. I always wonder if they've thought about what they'll do if they have to pick it up for any reason. I figure that it's best never to travel with anything you can't really manage on your own if you are in a situation where you can't roll it, the wheels aren't working or there aren't elevators or escalators.
