Hi everyone!! My mom and I were discussing which bags we were planning on checking. I used to have an American Tour. that was around a 25 and I would be close to 50lbs but I would never go over it. For my birthday I got a set of luggage, a 28, 19, and a small duffle bag which I plan on taking the 28 in May but is there any website that can tell me around how heavy the bag is without anything in it so I can somewhat tell? I'm 22 and tend to overpack, especially shoes lol and we have considered buying a scale because I dont want to be the family that is embarassed at check-in because of a bag being over weight.

We are using DME so I guess technically I could pack the 2 bags with wheels to spread stuff out and then have more room to take my goodies home since I'm not really dealing with my bags except to get from home to airport and then from airport to home.

If anyone knows that would be great thanks!!

Sometimes you can find online stores selling your particular luggage which will state the weight (but I wouldn't count on the accuracy). Otherwise, you would need a scale to be sure.

It is pretty easy to pack a 28" suitcase so it weighs over 50 pounds. I only travel with a suitcase that large when I'm driving.

I know this was not your question, but check with the airline their policy for weight of checked & carry on bags. Some have changed a little.

Also, Spirit flyers.... they are going to start charging for checked baggage..please double check...

I'm not sure of the bag weights. BUt I have been one of the lucky people who have had a bag over weight. When we left from Philly, they did not weigh our bags, but coming home from Orlando they weighed our bags and I had to redistrubute clothing and souvenirs in the airport. It was embarrassing so get a scale if you have to.:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

This is good advice. go to www.ebags.com and see if your bag is listed, as they show an approximate weight.

I travel every week, often up to 6 weeks at a time. I now won't use anything larger than my 25 inch suitcase. A 28 inch is just too big and heavy to manage. It goes overweight very quickly.

If I DO need to take a lot of work items or am travelling to a variety of locations and climates in one trip, I take the 25 inch (Samsonite X'ion which is very lightweight but sturdy) and a duffle bag. I put the heavier items in the duffle to avoid going overweight.

Even though my 25 inch weighs only 10lbs, it easily goes over the 50lb limit when only 3/4 full (luckily as an elite flyer I am often allowed 70lbs)

And I agree to check YOUR airlines website as allowances vary.

Thanks for all of the replies!! I think I'll end up taking the 28 and the 19 just so I wont have to worry about the weight and will have some extra room for goodies!!! and since my mom has already spoken for my old 25, i guess thats out lol. I checked the weight (thanks bav) and it says 13 lbs for a 29 but I'm going to go on USAir and Delta to see what their weight is but I'm pretty sure they are both 50 lbs.

It is definelty a good decision to bring both suitcases.

And what I do is always pack the heaviest stuff in the smallest bag.

smart idea thanks very much! I think I will try and squeeze in my smaller bag my shoes and my bathroom supplies and then in the big one simply just pack clothes because I checked both airlines and it is 50lbs, up to 70 if your in first class which we are not. I think overall this is prolly a good decision and a safe one too, plus I wont be the one dealing with my bags since DME does all that!!

Tink, here are some articles you may want to read.... ;) just in case you want to lighten the load some day in the future

http://www.hemispheresmagazine.com/mar07/familytravel.html I really liked this one when I read it; I too learned to unburden myself as I aged!

and while I am definitely not ready to travel through Europe like this yet, I CAN get by with one 21 inch carryon for a vacation easily

thanks for those articles, maybe one day I will turn into my mother and get away with only 3 pairs of shoes but i dunno about that! lol. My mom already told me when I get back to school tomorrow I better do a mock trial of my packing to realize I am nuts and packing way too much (like always!) but I was reading on the 2nd one and it said about moleskin and blister pads, I have moleskin for blisters but what are blister pads b/c I have some blisters get worse with the sticky moleskin??

I also fell 2 wks ago and ended up with a high ankle sprain and a slight fracture on my ankle so I've been going to PT like crazy so I am able to walk at WDW in May but as of right now I cant even get my Kswiss tennis shoes on without them hurting!!

think of moleskin as prevention - use it when the rubbing first starts to prevent a blister. Cut out the area where the rubbing occurs, so that you have a donut of moleskin surrounding the sensitive area. The moleskin prevents pressure.

A blister pad is for use when you already have a blister.

Hope that you feel better soon - it definitely helps to do a lot of walking before a trip to WDW! and actually, you are smart to take a few pairs of shoes as changing shoes frequently can help to reduce blisters and fatigue ;) Just use that as your excuse!

thanks!! my PT place told me to buy the moleskin because I have to wear one of those huge darth vadar looking boots lol but they did not tell me that i had to cut a donut around it with a whole and my mom had never heard of them before, I guess I should have researched it on here!

I was planning on taking some flip flops for during the day, crocs for at night, and tennis shoes if I get really tired but as of right now i cant wear them anyways lol thanks for your help, my dad reminds me every day we have less than a month till we leave and I need to work hard and get better and hes right cuz I'll never be able to keep up and they will leave me in the dust!

I bought a bag a while back that is a thin canvas and folds up to about
10"x4" (very small) and expands to about 10" x 20". You can use it for a beach bag, etc....

Anyway when we travel I always have it in my carry on bag incase for some reason there is a problem. I can remove items from my carry on to redistrubute, or incase on the return flight my bag is too heavy I can put items in the foldable bag. Plus its great if we're shopping while we are away and my hubby says "now how are we going to get this home?"...
I have an answer... I'll carry it on in the foldable bag:laughing:
Come to think of it.. I think I like the bag more than he does:rolleyes1

Here's an idea to figure out the weight of your bag. Step on the scale and weigh yourself. Then step on the scale again while holding your bag. Subtract the difference and this should give a good estimate of the weight of your bag.

I have also seen a luggage scale sold at Target in the travel accessories area if you are really worried about the weight of your bag.

I just had a bad experience with Delta, flying home from Savannah. My bag was overweight, which I expected since it was overweight when I left Pittsburgh, so I figured I was going to have to pay the $25. Then, the employee gets out a measuring stick. He measures my bag, and states that if you take the length + width + depth, it was not allowed to be over 62". I guess mine was, so he informed me I would have to pay an additional $100, for a total of $125!:scared1: I payed it, but complained. I talked to employees at the gate, and they recommended going back to talk to a supervisor. I think the guy checking me in was the supervisor (unsure, but his uniform was different). So needless to say I was very irate! I called Delta on cell phone while waiting to board, and they agreed that was their policy. I said it did not say on any sign or the jacket that held my ticket that you compute the dimension by L+W+H, only for carry-on, but I got nowhere. Finally, I gave it one last shot when we landed in Pittsburgh, and the woman there agreed that it was a suitcase (she said they usually only enforce this if it is an usual thing, like a large box) and since I was not charged that when I left PIT, she refunded my money. I sent a letter to Delta complaining about the employee in Savannah, and praising the employee in PIT. I've traveled with that suitcase before, and never had a problem. But long story short, you may want to measure the 28" one, and if the length + width + depth is more than 62", you may want to reconsider using it on a Delta flight!

thank you so much, I will have to go back to that website and look up some dimensions on it. When I was flying home from Ft Myers 3 yrs ago for spring break my friend had luggage that was over weight (she brought her text books which was foolish cuz you never do homework on SB) and we had to scramble to put some of her things in mine. Thanks for the advice tho, I plan on looking that up right now.

I looked up the sizes of the bag and the 28 is 18x10x28 which equals 56 so in that sense I'm ready to go with the size just maybe not the weight lol. I think tonight when I go back to school, I'll just do a mock packing and see what I end up with.

I agree with the PP about weighing yourself then yourself holding your luggage. We always do that before we fly. It takes two of us because I can't see the weight on the scale with the suitcase in my hands! I usually only check one bag, and bring an empty folded duffle bag with me. Then I can pack my souvenirs and such to go home without worrying about going over weight. I saw some neat bags on LillianVernon.com that are large and super lightweight but fold up to just a few inches to pack them. They might be worth looking into if you're a shoe fiend. :) I think they were under $10 each. Sorry about your ankle. I've sprained my left ankle several times. Nothing like going to the Halloween costume ball in college wearing an aircast. Ugh. Hope you heal well for your trip! Supportive shoes are a must!

An easy thing that you can do if you are worried about overpacking and are not checking in your own bags is to visit a local veterinarian's office with your fully-packed bag. They will always have a floor scale for large dogs, and while they might think that it is an odd request, they will surely let you set the bag on it to check.

If you are checking in your own bags, always pack a lightweight cloth bag on top of your largest one, and just go up to ANY agent station at the airport and weigh your bag before you get in line. Even a station that has no one working at it will have a working scale (there is only one switch to turn on the scales for the entire row.) The average h/b book will weigh around 2 lbs, and a pr. of shoes will normally weigh about 1.5 lbs.

Repeat after me: NO DENIM!!!! The stuff weighs a ton, and it it takes up a lot of space, too. Just don't take it unless you will wear it on the plane, both ways.

good ideas, thanks so much, the lighter the better right!!! good think crocs weight almost nothing lol. Tennis shoes are the worse and save all the extra room to pack then then hardly wear them which sucks lol
