Luggage Weight Limit

I always thought my luggage was heavy but I've noticed the scales when I checked at the counter and it's usually in the 30 to 35 pound range. It must be a large piece of luggage to hold over 50 pounds.

I agree. I hear about people being over the limit but I can extend my 24" checked bag to stuff it to the brim and it doesn't reach even 40 lbs. In this case, bigger is not better!

After reading this thread, I just weighed my wife and daughter's sheared suitcase, it's the big one. It weighs 48lbs.
Am I pushing my luck with the $50 Delta fine?

I always pack a very lightweight duffle bag for any extras. It can be checked and we don't have to pay for an overweight bag.

Lots of the lyrics of the song are kind of nonsensical, but that line definitely was originally written as, "Going where the weather suits my clothes."
LOL - thanks, NotUrsula! It's important for me to point out that I was NOT doubting drogerstn's lyrics, I was admitting my own experience with mis-heard lyrics

The density of summer clothing can be much greater than winter clothing.

I think you meant just the opposite.

I would repack. Don't take the chance of having to pay the overweight fee.

I have found that all the airlines are being very hard core about checking bag weight and the fines can be hefty (on US Air it's $50.00 per overweight bag).

Some of the older suitcases, Samsonite for example, can weigh 15-20 pounds empty. Sometimes I like to bring books or a stack of magazines to read. It can add to the weight.

I just pack an empty lightweight duffel bag. I can quickly add stuff to it if I'm overweight. I'll sometimes use the duffel bag for my dirty wash and will put my souvenirs in my regular suitcases for my return flight.

If you're overweight transfer any extra shoes or sneakers to your carry on or to your extra duffel bag.

Airlines are losing money and are looking at the fees for overweight luggage as a source of revnue. SW will usually let you slide if you're 1 or 2 pounds over but at 53 pounds they will usually charge you.

Not with what I've experienced and the way I pack. The insulated clothes and sweaters are "fluffy" and I can't compress them very well. My suitcase gets full before it gets too heavy if I'm packing winter clothes; it gets too heavy before it gets full if packing summer clothes.

LOL. Much as I love Jimmy's work, he didn't write that one. It was written by a songwriter named Fred Neil as the theme for "Midnight Cowboy" in 1969. (It was sung by Harry Nilsson on the soundtrack.) It's one of the most-recorded pop songs out there, even Perry Como recorded it.

..."
I didn't mean to imply that Buffet wrote it; I left a key word out of my sentence. :guilty: My apologies to the late Fred Neil. :thumbsup2
