Luggage suggestions?

For Christmas, I think I want to get each of the kids (and maybe myself and my husband) some luggage for next year's Disney trip. The stuff we have is close to 20 years old, and the kids are outgrowing the smaller pieces anyway.

We always check our bags when we fly (thank you DME!!!) so as long as the dimensions fall within airline minimums, we're OK. (Oh, and I'm a chronic overpacker. We never come anywhere near the weight minimums, but bigger is most definitely better.)

If you could find me something large, light, with good reviews at a reasonable price, it would be great. If it came in "cool colors" that would be even better.

Any ideas?

I'm also looking into the same thing.

Someone has told me that the brand that has lots of Disney branded luggage are usually oversized, so be careful of that.

I don't even know the size that they need to be- do you?

I'm crossing my fingers for a good deal during the Thanksgiving sale time!

Last time I was shopping for a carry-on I found the best deals at Ross after asking around these boards, and they are advertising a Luggage Event. I need to go look myself as we have a cruise coming up and I will have to check baggage.

My MIL gifted my kids for their birthdays this year American Tourister sets. She bought them each a 3 piece set from Sears for around $60 for ea. on Black Friday.

The TJMAXX and Marshalls stores in my area always have a great selection of brand name luggage at reasonable prices. You might not be able to find all matching pieces but I would definitely check them out. I love being able to open the bag up and look it all over, try out the wheels before buying luggage.

Word of Warning!!! I bought a set from Kohl's made by the brand CHAPS. It was horrible! I had the hardest time wheeling it from the airport parking lot to the terminal while my 97 lb daughter easily pulled her Samsonite luggage that was purchased at TJ Maxx. Mine was quite a workout and was returned to Kohl's after I came home. The next time I travel, I will be heading to TJ Maxx for Samsonite.

I will say be careful with 28 and 29 inch bags. They are very easy to go over the weight limit with. We went over with our 29 inch bags, when the limit was 70 pounds. We now use 27 inch, and we are always very close to the weight limit.

Buy the lightest bag you can afford. There can easily be a 5lb difference in the same size luggage. You can pack a lot more clothes for 5lbs.

If you have a Tuesday Morning near you, they sometimes have some really good prices on luggage.

I got my 28" peacock blue lovely 360° spinner (ok I sort of have a crush on my suitcase, it's fantastic) at Target on sale for $68. I don't travel too too often, once a year on average but I forsee having this one for a long time. It's sturdy, not too heavy and wheels like a dream.

I'm looking for the best way to manage a checked bag and a carry on, and still have a free hand to guide my son who is easily distracted by the hustle and bustle of travel. We have an 8 night cruise coming up and I want to be able to manage our own luggage.

I like the TJ Maxx/Marshall's suggestion. You can go into their store and try a bunch of different sizes/brands/configurations all while imagining handling your son (sort of a conceptual dry-run). I went in 3 or 4 times before I finally decided on what I wanted.

FWIW - I have had a few brands over the years and I like Olympia, Ricardo (not the line from Kohl's - the 28" fell apart on me), Samsonite, Ful and Heys.

My last cases had in line wheels. My newest are mostly spinners (TJ) and two Ful hybrid duffel bags (Costco - another good source for luggage). For the spinners I have multiple sizes for different types of trips - 18", 21", 26" and hard-side garment bag (wardrobe). I also have an in-line wheeled business case for laptop, etc. (just waiting for the business spinners to come down in price).

For reference - on average we travel 4-5 times a year for leisure (mostly weekends, with 1 or 2 trips being full weeks) and 1-2 times a year for business (mostly full weeks).

We have a Marshalls here. I have never actually found anything there so quit going, but will check it out for luggage. We have had 2 luggage nightmares with large disney bags, once when the strap ripped apart from the weight of the bag, and another when a wheel broke and we had to drag the suitcase from the van to the porter and then back to the van again after. No more disneystore luggage for us!

Having lived in FL we normally drive to Disney or cruises, but now that we are in VA we are flying more and more.

I like to use a backpack for my carry-on, and my kids each carry a backpack with their own stuff for the plane. That way my hands are free for luggage and wrangling children at the airport. its much easier than the time we all had our own rolling carry-on!

I love my backpack but wish it had some kind of trolley sleeve for when I want to attach it to my checked or carry-on bag.

I have found that if I give my son a lightweight rolling bag it kind of helps keep him grounded. Otherwise he wants to be a video game character dodging people as we walk through the airport.
