Luggage size?

I read somewhere that airlines are cracking down on oversized luggage, including suitcases taller than 30 inches. I have a 30.5-inch wheeled Samsonite suitcase. Have any of you had any problems checking similar bags? I'd hate to be surprised with that $80 oversize fee at the airport.

Go to your airlines website. Check the dimensions and weight. That said there is a good chance a 30" Samsonite bag will weight more than 50 lbs.

It is generally the combined size of the bag cannot exceed a certain number of inches when the height, lenght and depth are added together. So your 30.5" bag might not be too big, but I second the check your airlines website. Requirements vary by airline just to confuse everyone more.

We're flying with Delta and its guidelines say no more than 62" totay (height, depth, width). I measured our larger suitcase (I believe it is 30") and it came to just 62" and that was not factoring in putting anything in the front/side pockets. Then we weighed it and it came to nearly 20 pounds. Factoring in everything you may pack, it may just push the limits. We went out and bought an inexpensive 25" and plan on borrowing another piece from my brother so we can pack everything w/o having an extra baggage weight charge.

That sounds like my suitcase, DawnMaree! It's at 61.5 without measuring the front pockets, and it already weighs close to 20 lbs.

I'm also flying Delta, but I'm on one of their partner airline commuter flights to Dallas, and I'm worried they have different baggage regulations since it's such a small plane. I may have to break down and buy a smaller suitcase like you did--what a hassle!

Thanks for the advice everyone!:D
