Luggage question

How many pieces of luggage are you allowed? Do "normal sized" (whatever that is!? :) ) fit in the closet or under the bed so you aren't always bumping into them?

Do they have any areas on the ship to store bags? I ask because we're thinking of booking the golf excursion on Cozumel and my DH and DS want to bring their clubs. I don't want them to be in the way the whole cruise.

Thanks for your help. I'm new to DIS, but I've found out SOO much from all of you--you're awesome! :cheer2:

Welcome to the DIS! :)

You are not limited to the amount or size of luggage brought onto the ship like airplanes. The only limit is what you want to store in your room. There are no areas to store any items. The bathtub is what we use to store the kid's strollers when it is not in use. That would help with the golf clubs. Luggage can be stored under the bed when you lift the bed frame and slide it right under.

Yay!

Thank you for asking this question. Southwest allows three bags per person and I had read somewhere that the cruise only allowed two. We have five between the two of us and I was concerned that I would have to drag something to lunch with us!!!
Thanks for the info.

DCL will send you 2 luggage tags per person with your docs. If you need more, you can get them from a porter at the port. :)

DCL's FAQs mention nothing about a baggage limitation (it just says to pack "the less the better") so I have no doubt that there is no "DCL" restriction (as PP's have stated). People wheel on coolers and I've known some cruisers that won't travel without their own blender. :rotfl: The biggest concern about luggage is the airline restrictions. Assuming you are flying AirCanada for at least one leg of your trip, they allow 2 checked bags per person for economy seats and those bags must not be over 50 lbs or a total dimension of 62 inches (Length + width + height). Go over and you will pay a hefty price i.e., $35CA or $25US for overweight or oversized and $105CA or $75US per extra bag. US carriers have similar penalties. The weight and size requirements are pretty standard for many of the US carriers as well, though as mentioned some carriers may allow more bags.

Its best to check with your carrier(s). I have a 30 inch Samsonite Spinner that just makes the total dimensions and I can't stuff it with heavy stuff or until it bursts or I'll be over the weight limit. I have seen passengers checking in having to tear open their luggage and re-distribute it. Most recently (September) I saw this at the AirTran counter in Orlando when we checked in for our return flight. I felt bad for them and worse for the long line of people behind them having to wait while they did this. AirCanada also allows 2 carry on items but check out the restrictions as these vary more widely. If I recall, a diaper bag or laptop counts but a purse and stroller doesn't. I know that Northwest allows one carry on plus a purse OR a laptop OR small backpack but doesn't count diaper bags so last time I wore a fanny pack and brought a diaper bag and my rolling backpack was my one item. DH used the laptop as his one item. Golf clubs count as one piece of checked luggage and can't go over the above mentioned weight and size or you have to pay the penalty and in no event are you allowed to take golf clubs that weigh more than 70 lbs and 80 inches. If I recall correctly they also limit the amount of clubs and balls and they want it packed in a hard case or make you sign that they aren't liable. Northwest has a nearly identical policy. I think Southwest is a bit more liberal, but not much. My point is, they all have restrictions the question is just how restrictive are they.

Whew! If you make it through check in at the airport, finding a place to store the clubs in your stateroom should be a breeze. Good luck!

We'll be heading to Toronto this weekend, but fortunately we are driving and nobody will be golfing! Although I watched 3 guys golf during snow flurries a week and a half ago -

I appreciate all the info!

Have a safe trip to Toronto this weekend, Kimberly C. We could've golfed here this week had the courses been open. The weather in November has been better than we had most of October! But alas, December approaches and this weekend will be much cooler than it has been...sorry!

This is why we booked a cruise in February! Right when we can't stand it anymore, we'll take off for the sunny Caribbean...ahhhhhh! :goodvibes

Geez, I hesitate to even post this since I'm a relative rookie here. I mean no offense to the experts on this board, but...

We just received the "My Cruise Travel Kit" for our 2/1 cruise. In the Vacation Guide, Setting Sail section it says "no more than two (2) per person, please" in reference to suitcases. This is in addition to the day bag they suggest you keep with you when boarding. I think DCL is very liberal about bending the rules but they do state a limit.

I used to use a traditional type suitecase but now I use my LLBean rolling adventure duffle and LOVE IT!!! It holds a ton of stuff (I use the Large size...the XL is too large) and when it is empty it lays flat and slides right under the bed. I even bought one for each of our kids to use on vacations....plus...they have a lifetime guarantee....if it breaks or tears LLBean will send you a new one!!!

They have some great colors and tropical prints and are so very easy to spot on the luggage carousel....I have the orange juice aloha and just got my DD the magenta aloha...my other DD has the pink one.

I was just on a the 7 night Magic with 3 days at WDW after and I used my rolling duffle and one carryon for my stuff....I even packed my formal wear in the duffel and it was fine. :thumbsup2

We don't bring more than 1 suitcase and 1 carry on per person, but with 5 of us, that's a lot of luggage even for 2 staterooms. What we do for storage is to take my suitcase (biggest one), place DH's inside that, then 1 of the kids in that one. Then we store it in the closet. The other two we do the same and put it in the kid's closet (and stuff all but 1 carryon inside those). It saves a bit of space.

Nonsense! You're no rookie, you're a Mouseketeer! :cool1: And even if you were a "rookie" earning your ears, post on...everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and should be encouraged to post helpful information. Your info is good to know! But I must say that the fact that DCL says "please" (and I chuckle because I'm always reminding DS to use his manners) implies, at least to me, that this is more of a suggestion than a requirement. Kind of along the same line as dining attire suggestions. Cruise lines suggest what you "should" wear but sometimes people just don't pay attention. I'm still cracking up over the thread that discussed the hootchie woman who wore an outfit with writing on her butt to formal night. :lmao: On the other hand DCL clearly spells out what forms/documentation you "must" have and the fact that you aren't getting on the ship without them. JMHO!

When we checked in at the resort for our last cruise, we were asked if we needed any additional luggage tags. We said yes and were handed five more tags! No one seemed to care in the least how much you brought.

But what you bring, you have to live with. The idea of nesting suitcases is a great one - if you can size them so that they will all fit inside each other, that is less to store.

Under the beds is a great place to store suitcases. The beds are low, so it needs to be somewhat soft-sided. You can't slide them under the beds, but you can pick the bed up, slide the suitcase under and then set the bed back down. A duffle or anything completely collapsable would be perfect under the bed.

I have heard of folks storing some items on the verandah. A navigator's vernadah, being partially enclosed works well for storing items that won't be affected much by being outside (cooler, stroller etc.). You may want a rope or bungy cord to make sure it is secure. An open verhanda doesn't work quite as well, but I do know folks that have stored items out there.

Another one that we've done is to take the life jackets off of the top shelf of the closet and put them under the bed and then put suitcases up there.
