This will be the 1st time we are flying since 2001. Do we need to lock our checked luggage and with what type of locks or do they need to stay unlocked due to security checking them? Also do we need special id tags or is any kind ok? We are using ME and flying out of PHL.

You need to have your checked bags unlocked unless you use special TSA approved locks, which they can unlock to go through your bags.

Any luggage tags are OK as far as the airline goes, as long as they have the pertinent information. You will also get special tags from ME to put on so that your luggage gets pulled and not put out to the carousel. HTH!

We'll be flying out of PHL too, on the 23rd. Enjoy!

Do you know where I can get TSA approved locks? We fly out on October 11th. Are you doing park and fly at phl? I am still trying to decide. We have about a 2 hour drive to PHL and our flight is at 7:55am.

Quite honestly you're better off leaving them unlocked completely.

Thanks! I was leaning towards that, but then was worried about theft.

Well those locks will not protect you against theft...

The TSA has hundreds of keys to the locks and it's fairly common knowlege that just about everyone else in the baggage area has managed to get one of the keys.

Don't know about buying the locks, sorry. I just always leave ours unlocked.

I park in the economy parking at PHL. I have a 6-ish (a.m.) flight, and I have about a 45-50 minute ride to the airport. So, we just leave home around 3:30 and go to economy parking.

You can get the locks at most places that sell luggage. Even walmart. They will have a red & white symbol on them.

I don't usually lock my luggage if its being handled just in the airport. But when we went to St.Lucia in Feb. after we landed we took a helicopter to the hotel area...and they had to bring our bags via ground later in the day(we knew about it ahead of time) I did lock them...

This is incorrect.

You may lock your bags with ANY lock you choose. You just have to be warned that if your bags are chosen for inspection and do not have TSA approved locks, your lock will be cut off and you are not owed a replacement.

TSA approved locks may be purchased just about anywhere these days.

Sorry, you're right, it would have been more accurate to say that you need to use the TSA approved locks if you want a "gaurantee" that they'll still be there when you get your bags.
