Luggage and a CPAP machine

Maybe someone who has traveled with a CPAP machine can answer this question for me. My family is packing ultra light for our cruise and only bringing carry on bags. In addition I will have my camera bag, my kids will each have a small personal bag and my husband will be carrying his CPAP machine. I know that DCL take care of our carry on bags but what about our smaller bags? Will we have to carry those around until our room is ready? The CPAP is kind of bulky and could be a pain to drag around but I know my husband would be nervous about leaving it somewhere if he didn't know it was going to be in good hands.

Yes, you get to drag them around until your room is ready. If you are concierge, it might be different.

My friend never checks in her CPAP machine. She hand carries it. If you are either going on the Wonder or Magic please bring a long extension cord. On the Fantasy and Dream she did not have to use the extension cord.

As much as I trust Disney to get things where they need to be, I'd also suggest keeping the CPAP within reach if it is something he really needs on the ship. I left mine at home, but am not exactly the model CPAP user. However, DW and DD10 both get migraines, so their headache medicine is never something we would pass off to a porter out of fear that it would possibly be lost. If a particular medicine (or machine, in this case) is vital, keep it handy.

I'm very interested in the "ultra light" packing and hope that goes well. We just got off the Fantasy on Saturday, and I had half a suitcase full of clothes that never saw the light of day! I have already gone to my old packing list and made some notes about what I would leave home the next time. I will definitely be packing lighter on our next cruise! Please come back to this thread when you return and let us know how the ultra light approach turned out.

You can have the porters take your carry-on-sized luggage also - but if it is a backpack or something like that, not sure if they will take it. I usually keep a small, rolling, carry-on that my CPAP fits in with me. This time, however, I let the porters take everything but a backpack and my purse and it worked out fine. With any luggage, you risk it will get lost, but I thought the risk was minimal and I didn't want to lug my CPAP on my shoulder for 2 hours while I explored the ship.

I wouldn't check a cpap with the way the luggage is piled up to be delivered, the risk of the machine breaking is to great. You can have DCL provide the distilled water, call and make sure the information is on your reservation.

You could plan your arrival time to be closer to 1:30 when the rooms will be ready so you don't have to lug your carryons for as long, that is an option also.

They will take whatever sized luggage you want to leave with them, we've checked kids backpacks even. It's really up to you if you want to check it, or have the safety of carrying it with you.

I would not let the porters take the CPAP machine. It is too expensive and luggage is thrown around to a degree in those bins. The porter we had last time wouldn't even take , he knew what it was but we told we were not leaving it anyway.

Did you request distrilled water if your machine needs it. You can put it under health request just call and the water will be delivered to your room or waiting.

I would not leave anything valueable including purses, camera etc either. You just never know.

Rather than a risk of losing it (which is possible) - I think the greater risk is damaging it. The luggage is just tossed about and piled unbelievably crazy. If the CPAP were nicely packed and cushioned within a large suitcase, maybe. But not in a small carry-on. I'd keep it with me.

Enjoy your cruise!

Things are all thrown into an area. We always carry my mom s with us onboard

Sounds like we'll be carrying the CPAP. Thank you all for the information. And thanks for the tip about the distilled water. I never even thought about how we would handle that.

did i read correctly that if you request distilled water, they will have it for you?

Yes , the room steward didn't know what we were asking when it wasn't waiting for us but it came a short time later.

Can't fly with water so this is a good thing. You can also request it at WDW resorts too and it will be there for you.

:thumbsup2

We had all these questions last year for our 1st cruise and my DH was diagnosed 2 weeks prior to our cruise. I as per the disboard actually called disney regarding all my questions and they were more than happy to answer all my questions. I had heard about the water from the dis but was worried it wasn't going to happen and all the answers I got on here were all right. We carried my DH CPAP with us on board and it stayed under a lounge chair with us until our room was ready, no issues. It was in it's own carry on bag and my DH took another bag on the plane too. No issues with the airport scan, it just had to be open and it went through the x-ray scan alone. If your water isn't in your room just go to customer service and they will hand you a gallon bottle, need more?? just go back and they are happy to help with that. Our maid was great and said she would check it and make sure we had enough water for our 6 days.

wish i knew it was available at disney world as well

It is available for purchase at many WDW Resort gift shops. We just purchased a gallon there two weeks ago at BWV. No free distilled water though at WDW.

The CPAP is considered medical and nothing medical can be counted towards your carry-on allowance for air travel as long as it's in a separate carry-on bag. Just declare the medical bag at security.

We got free water at POR last time we were there , in August. We requested just like we did for our cruise. It was delivered to our room no charge.
