Has anyone ever had any luck getting Lowe's to price match Home Depot? My dishwasher died with amazing timing. It's being slowly dying but up until yesterday it actually ran - it cleaned the dishes but plastic parts have been breaking on the racks, etc and for it's age they weren't worth replacing (12 yrs). Now it's not filling and the motor's not running - it started out running but halfway thru the cycle it stopped (I'm counting it a bonus that although it doesn't fill it did drain). I tried restarting but no luck. Of course, it timed it's death to coincide with a $1,000 car repair bill and $3,000 tuition bill and we're supposed to go on vacation in two weeks so I'm trying to get the best dishwasher for the best price I can and the closer to $300 the better. Anyway I did a quick trip to Lowe's today and saw a few dishwasher's that I liked in the $300 - $400 range. I came home and did a search for the one's I liked at other local stores and online to price compare and found that the one I liked best (and that get's the best ratings) is available at Home Depot for $50 less. Lowe's is much closer to my house but Home Depot is only 12 miles away so I could go to either one but I'd prefer Lowe's since to save money I'll be bringing it home in the back of our pickup (DH is going to install) and they are MUCH easier to deal with on a merchandise pick up. (Best Buy and Sears also have it for the same price as Home Depot but Sears wants to charge a $60 permit fee (not even sure what that is so there's no way I'm paying it) and my local Best Buy, ummm, the sales people, ugh!)

You shouldn't have any trouble price matching at Lowe's. Just show them the exact model on your phone for proof of the price (and I believe it has to be in stock at Home Depot but I'm not completely sure).

I hope your new dishwasher is good...we bought an LG dishwasher less than a year ago and it's already had to have a new sump assembly put in...cleans well, but I'm just waiting for it to happen again. Good thing we're selling our house and should be closing in less than 2 weeks! Good riddance! LOL I hate dishwasher shopping.

We have price matched several appliances at Lowes. I just take a print out of a screen shot of the Home Depot price in and they match it. Our Home Depot does even better. They price match plus give additional off.

Just fyi though, this is all regional. My mom's Home Depot and Lowes do not price match or accept each other's coupons or anything. Ours are fiercely competitive.

Check Sears.com and bestbuy.com too. My local Lowe's has price matched both of them. You can also get 10% off movers coupons from ebay. Many are printable.

While negotiating, after you thank them for matching, remember to ask them "what will make me WANT to buy it here?".

That charming little trick had Olum's digging up another $125 in rebates after matching Home Depot's price for the fridge we just bought.

I know you didn't ask, but I'll give my 2 cents on the topic. I moved into an old house without a dishwasher thinking we would remodel and have one installed. Three years later and we still don't have one. I don't miss it one bit. Not that you shouldn't have a dishwasher, but I am thinking maybe you might wait until the dust settles before buying one. You may find that hand washing isn't so bad for a little while. I'm not sure what quality you would get for $300. The last one I bought, probably 15+ years ago was over $400 and I also took my brother out last year to buy one for around the same price. Just a thought.

Thanks for the replies. I'm crossing my fingers then that they will price match for me. If not then off to Home Depot I'll be going.

To PP that suggest hand washing until a better model comes along...The model I want is on sale marked down from almost $500 so I don't want to wait too long as it's one of those deals that might go away and not come back. It's a top rated dishwasher in it's price range (a Whirlpool) with over 1,000 4 or 5 star reviews and it's been on the market for 2 years now.

I'm one of those folks that "needs" a dishwasher, just because I don't like spending half my free time washing dishes. Our sink doesn't hold water (another thing which needs to be fixed which we just dealt with because we had a dishwasher) - I end up using a dishpan which just doesn't hold that many dishes and doesn't fit my pans. Add to that I have no counter space to put the dishes to drain and air dry so they have to be hand dried. It's just too time consuming and because the sink doesn't hold water I'm using a ton of water to wash - way more than a dishwasher would use. It takes a couple of hours a day to wash, dry and put away all the dishes and that's time that definitely could be better spent (whether I'm the one doing the dishes or the kids). To cut down on the dishwashing I've got the kids using paper and plastic but DH doesn't like that because "it's not eco friendly".

They'll beat the price. They won't (unless you're lucky) match the price and then let you apply a coupon. Might be an issue if Home Depot us selling a floor sample or if the two stores are so far apart as to not be considered local competitors

No Coupons. And definitely not a floor sample. I did my price comparisons online and then added to cart and selected in store stock pickup to make sure they had it at the store. The stores would definitely consider each other competitors. Although Home Depot is 12 miles by road from me it's only 5 miles as the crow flies and the Lowe's is 3 miles as the crow flies. Unfortunately the truck can't travel roads as the crow would fly. People might object if I drove thru their house. ;)

Also remember if you use a lowes credit card they knock off 5% so if they won't match would the 5% cover the difference? Good luck.

The extra 10% at Lowes is only if the price at Home Depot isn't a sale/clearance price. You can get the 5% with the Lowes card tho!

That sounds like a great deal! I can see now why you are moving fast!:thumbsup2

Well, I bought it! They did price match and they offered free delivery. No extra 10% though but I didn't mind because of the free delivery, I was going to pick up but this will save some major hassle. They also offered free haul away. Not sure if we'll take advantage of the haul away - it depends on whether DH can get the old one out tomorrow night. If he can't, for us at least, it's no biggie, our town offers free haul away on appliances anyway.

just a heads up on the permit fee-we had to deal with this where we used to live. some cities, towns or counties require a permit for installing a new dishwasher, and sears does what they are legally required to do in those places and gets the required permit, the cost of which is passed on to the purchaser. in areas where it's common the sales people know to immediately tack it on, and if they aren't aware of it/forget to-it immediately pops onto the register screen when the purchaser's zip code is entered.

we dealt with this b/c we lived adjacent to a city that required these permits, but once we provided sears with our zip code/proof of address the charge was removed.

you might want to check and see if where you live has a permit requirement, because in many areas the penalty is at minimum 3x the original permit fee. also-check with your utility company to see if your new unit qualifies for a rebate, if I remember right our dishwasher qualified for one of about $30-$50.

I looked on our electricity site for rebates and didn't see one but I think I'll call and double check. $50 (even $30) would sure help take the sting away.

With regard to the permit. Lowe's said I only needed one if it was a "new" dishwasher, not for a replacement. I think Sears automatically assumed it was for new construction.

ETA - No rebate on the dishwasher from the electric company. BUT - I did get a rebate receipt from lowe's. I didn't think I qualified because the final cost was below the $399 they were advertising but I guess because the cost was over that for the dishwasher before the price match the rebate form automatically generated. Not sure if I really qualify as I did pay less than $399 but I'm going to spend the money on the stamp and send it in and see what happens. The rebate would be a $30 Lowe's gift card and while I don't need anything now I'm sure I will before the year is up especially with Oldest DS heading off to college for the first time in a few weeks...
