please do not laugh!

I have been heavy all of my life. I have lost 55 lbs and kept it off, since going on low net carb and no sugar diet.

I think I have found something that will work, for me and my weight problem, for the first time in my life.

does anyone know, if I can maintain this diet, while on DCL cruise?
or do they serve you alot of fruits, pastries and deserts?

anyone know, if advance, I can request help From DCL to maintain my low net carb and low sugar diet, while on DCL cruise in September,2004

Hi Kansas-

Congrats on your fantastic weight loss! You're concern over eating healthy on vacation is not something that will be laughed at - you've worked hard and don't want to see your results go away. I, too, practice a low-carb lifestyle. I have never been on DCL, but have been on other cruises and I can comment on what is served. There is a lot of fruit, pastries, desserts, and other high-carb options at your fingertips.

You need to decide, at each meal, what is acceptable to you and what is not. For instance, breakfast is an easy meal to stay on track with. You can even have some fruit such as strawberries (very low for a fruit) or cantaloupe (a little higher, but not horrible). Lunch can be easy too. Have a burger with no bun, or any meat for that matter, with a side salad. Dinner may be a little more challenging as a lot of people will eat dessert. The servers won't force you to eat it, though. I would recommend you don't punish yourself. Enjoy a dessert if that is what you want. Enjoy a dessert a day for the entire cruise if that is what you want. You won't gain 55 pounds in a week! Let yourself enjoy the food without going crazy, and plan to get right back on program once you return home.

I did this during my two week trip to WDW last December. I ate what I felt like eating knowing that when I got home I was going to slip right back on program. It was easy, and I had a great time eating desserts each day. It also doesn't hurt to exercise every day. I actually lost weight while at WDW!!!

Enjoy your cruise!

Erin :D

Wow what a coincident i,m also on the same type of food plan no sugar or white flower (we dont call it a diet .diet is a four letter word!!!) and also sailing in sept. what date in sept. are you sailing i will be on the 25th magic i look forward to see what other people have to say about this subject:)

My DH and I were doing South Beach during our cruise. We indulged occasionally, but were able to maintain pretty well. We each gained three pounds that fell off quickly when we got home. There were many menu options available and "being good" was not that difficult. We just decided not to beat ourselves up when we wanted to try something that wasn't diet compliant. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished. I know how tough it is. Don't worry about it at all, just have a wonderful time. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

We sail in 45 days for a 7 day Eastern. DH and I have been
South Beaching for several months and have been relatively successful. I've lost a couple dress sizes and DH has lost at least 30 lbs. We know we will not be able to stick with the diet completely on the cruise nor do we really *want* too! But we will make sure that we have more protiens and fruit than pastries for breakfast. Lunch we can get salads with lean meats...

To answer your question yes, you can get what you need/want at dinner, lunch, breakfast. At any meal, if you do not like the selections on the menu for any course, you can ask for a variation/substitution. You can always get plain chicken breast, or beef/steak at meals. One dinner I was at, I got the appetizer and didn't care for it, my server was beside himeself that I did not like it because he reccomended it. He was insistant that I choose something else, nothing else appealed to me. Finally after he kept bugging me ;) I asked if the salad could be modified, leaving off the blue cheese and change the dressing to a vingarette. No problem! It was in front of me in less than 5 minutes with profuse apologies about the original appetizer.

Your servers want to help you enjoy your trip. Tell them Day One, your "dietary restrictions" and they will help you, make suggestions, and offer suitable alternatives to what is on the menu. If you are really concerned, call Guest Services ahead of time and ask them if you can have diabetic fare attachend to your reservation or if they can offer diabetic fare onboard. I'm pretty sure they have that all the time and basically, low carb, low sugar is diabetic fare....:scratchin

So, just relax, know that you will probably bend the rules a little, your'e on a cruise! Enjoy yourself! But enjoy in moderation and once you get back home go back on your regamine strictly for a week or so, any weight you might have gained on board will be gone quickly. OH! Don't forget, there is also an exercise room, and many opportunities for exercise on board too to help keep the ole waist line under control while cruising. That can help make up for any little indulgences you may partake of during meals. ;)

I'm not on any particular diet but am faithfully exercising at Curves three times a week with good results. My goal on our 5/1 magic and WDW cruise was to not GAIN any weight. We walked LOTS at WDW and I walked around the ship a lot. When I weighed in May I had LOST two pounds.

One of the nicest things to do on the ship is either walk around deck 4 or stroll around deck 10 if it's not too windy. Either one is about a third of a land mile per lap. Also, take the stairs instead of the elevators and you will burn off any non standard calories you eat.

Congratulations on your progress. Definitely talk to your servers. They really want you to have a Magical or Wonderful cruise and will help you to choose wisely. On our cruise, the meat portions were always more than I could eat so you won't have any problem finding adequate protein.

You can definitely do this on the cruise. Everything is tempting. I cheated two or three times (I think on a cheesecake and two different drinks). The only drawback was that desserts/sweets is very limited. They have some sugar free desserts but not necessarily low on carbs. I brought with me a box of low carb bars.

Hubby and I also live the low carb lifestyle.

We had lost 30 pounds each before our first disney cruise.
We used the stairs instead of elevators and did lots of walking on the islands, exploring and such.

We decided we were not going to not eat something, if there was something we wanted to try. I was up two pounds when we got back, and went right back into two weeks of induction and moved forward from there. You can certainly go the whole cruise without breads/sweets..but, there are no "low carb" meals.

Not sure about the carbs but there were at least one or two sugar free dessert options on the menu at each restaurant.

Congrats on your weight loss!

My wife and I also do the low-carb thing and we were happily surprised by our choices on the 5/15 Magic cruise. The waitstaff was extremely accomodating. Often, we would choose a main course and substitute vegetables that were listed on other main courses. For example, instead of the mashed potatos that were offered with the steak, we would ask for the sewwt potato fries or the broccoli from the fish, etc.

The waitstaff always said, you can have pretty much whatever vegetable you want even if it was not on that night's menu but we usually had plenty of choices from what was listed.

Asking for something with no rice or potato or pasta was always accomodated with no problem whatsoever. Sometimes, we would order two main courses together without the starch. There was always a lot of great choices!

Every night there was a sugar-free dessert selection...not necessarily low carb but we figured it was better than the full calorie choices.

I think it was almost easier to eat low-carb on the cruise than it is at home!

By the way, our drink of choice was Absolut Citroen and Diet Coke....no carbs
