I started on the low FODMAP diet to try to pinpoint what foods are causing me issues. I am in the elimination stage and am finding it very difficult to find foods to eat. Anyone have experience with this? Any recommendations? Recipes?

My recommendation is to think like the 1950's - "a meat and 2" with the meat (like a steak or chicken breast or pork chop) flavored simply with salt and pepper. Fill the plate with a FODMAP veg and fruit (or something like rice or potato - again 1950s) and call it a day.

Easiest allergy cooking (which applies to FODMAP too) is to always focus on "meat and potatoes" cooking - very simple, very much "as is" without mixing a lot of stuff up together...

Curious to see what people suggest as I am supposed to do this and find most of the foods I eat on the "bad" side of the list! I find myself eating what people would consider too much beef and I don't know what to do.

Exactly. Even the "healthy" foods I eat are high in FODMAP's. Who knew that apple's could be bad?

I am day 3 and just got word that I have to do some tests before my official GI appointment. Which means I probably should go back to my regular diet for a day or two, so that those tests are accurate to my usually diet. My doctor said he would make a referral but since it had been more than 2 weeks I figured I would just start things on my own because I was getting tired of how my body was feeling.

I used to eat "an apple a day" and never thought it contributed to my stomach pain. After getting the list from my doctor, I was like "well, I guess this is why I always have a problem." Most of the food was in my diet. Someone suggesting peeling the apple and I have tried that with varying degrees of success. Sometimes I can eat a peeled apple and sometimes it bothers me.

Basically most proteins are FODMAP friendly.

Anything sugary is not. That's why apples are high in FODMAPS. Some fruits are high in sugar than others. Be careful with vegetables that are too high in fiber.

For me, the hardest part is eating foods with NO garlic & onions. I am often on the go and need to just grab something from the nearest deli. Almost everything that is processed will contain garlic or onions or BOTH. :headache: Even ketchup and some mayos contain one or the other. There is only one or two obscure cultures whose cuisines do not use garlic or onions, and one is due to religious reasons.

Basically, if I am out, I will go to McDonalds and get a plain hamburger with no salt, (as I am also watching my sodium intake.) I cannot even have a cheeseburger as the American cheese has FODMAPS (and lactose.) I can do the tiniest smidge of ketchup on it. I usually discard the bun, especially one topped with sesame seeds.

I'll have a salad with FODMAP friendly veg and just drizzle it with olive oil. Sometimes vinegar or lemon juice. NO salad dressings as they usually contain garlic &/or onions.

When cooking at home, as a PP said, I broil my meats with just olive oil, light salt & pepper. If you get a good cut of meat, it will be flavorful enough that it doesn't need a lot of spices.

There are lists of FODMAP friendly and high FODMAP foods put out by Monash University. They even have an app. I just Google the "specific food Monash Fodmap" and see if I can eat it.

I have been using an app to check foods. The problem I am finding is inconsistent information. One said Strawberries were out but another says they are okay in specified quantity's.

I will be very sad if I have to avoid garlic and onion for the rest of my life. So many foods contain these in one way or another. Those will be the first things I do in the reintroduction phase.

I was trying to figure out what I could eat if I had to grab something on the go and a protein style in & out burger was about the only thing I could come up with. The fries are probably okay as well.

I can say after just a few days it is definitely having the desired effect.

Garlic and onions are definitely tough, but once I cut those out along with dairy, my stomach issues almost vanished. Also green peppers. We live around many Italian food places so it is hard find something totally safe there. Sometimes I just risk it and see what happens.
