Allegiant was great, quick check in process in Portsmouth, arrived early, got our luggage quickly, quick walk to Alamo.
On the way back it was a quick check in, in Sanford, security was a breeze, easy to get to. A definate plus.
Sanford's a great alternative to MCO if you don't mind the drive (which I don't, so less stressful for me than sitting in traffic on I-4 at the wrong time of day!). Too bad there are no more flights between Syracuse and Sanford or we'd keep flying that route!
I loved Sanford the one time we flew in there on PanAm out of Worcester. I was hoping to fly with Allegiant in Jan, but I guess there will be no more Sanford for me now
We flew from Worcester, MA into Sanford in May on Allegiant and we were very impressed with both the airline and the airport. Unfortunately though, Allegiant pulled out of Worcester on Sunday...with very little notice. I hope the airport is able to find another airline and they will fly into Sanford again. We actually had reservations for the end of this month on Allegiant, now we have to fly into Logan!

Our drive was also close to an hour.
I'd say it depends on traffic, how well you know the WDW area, and your resort location.
We rented from Alamo like the OP. We did a one-way rental (with taxes it was about $50) and returned it to the Dolphin (we stayed at BW so it was easy to get back to the resort).
