Love this Chick fil-A interview technique

Personally, I think it's stupid. I don't' work there yet, I shouldn't be expected to clean the restaurant, even if it is just picking up a wrapper.

Eh, I think it's just a character trait test. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I don't mind it.

I saw New Zealand (I think) set up a test where a kid was eating out of the trash to find people they wanted to invite to be police offers. That was a little more out there than I'm comfortable with.

I don't mind personality tests, but this one made me laugh. Recently, my husband fell at work, hit his head and needed staples. I met him at the ER. While we were in a room waiting for him to be fixed up, I saw all this paper trash near the wastebasket, but not in it. It was driving me crazy, so I made sure there was nothing on it that could hurt me and threw it away. Not my job, but I guess you could say it's my own character trait that made me feel the need to pick it up.

I don't know... would I pick up trash in my interview clothes?
I absolutely am the type to pick stuff up, but not doing so might be more a fear of coming into an interview with dirty hands, or stained clothing.
I'm sure he isn't leaving spilled milkshakes out to clean up. It sounds more like a napkin or straw wrapper.

I pick up trash all of the time, as well.

I used to work at a place where the owner would leave $20 bills in dirt piles to see if anyone would sweep without being told.

His son took over before I was hired & didn't continue the practice. We swept a lot of piles before we realized that :(

My Dd worked for chick fil a last year. I guess they have a thing for trash because you needed to pick up one item of trash in the parking lot and bring it to your manager before your shift started. Now this store and parking lot were spotless. It was such a pita for her to search for trash. Once in a while she would bring in something from my car because there either was not one piece of trash or maybe there was a band aid or tissue which she was not going to touch. She does not miss working there.

Yea, I don't think it's a true test of character. Maybe a simplistic view of others works for them, makes them feel smart.
Now that the word is out they'll have to come up some other odd measure of great potential.

I should make my kids do this in the living room before I serve them dinner every night. Or before I shell out cash for everything under to sun.:cool1:

ETA: Honestly I am kidding. I really feel that an adult making another adult pick up trash and show it to them before they are "allowed" to begin work is disrespectful and degrading. I would never work for someone like that. I'm glad your wife left!

I think it is a great test. Too bad the word got out and the manager will have to change what he does.

It shows what people care about. I wouldn't want to hire people that are just looking for a job. I would want someone that takes pride in what they do. People that would normally, without thinking about it, pick up trash in a restaurant, that's the kind of person that will take pride in their work.

It was my daughter (not wife). Not quite an adult at the time but I believe everyone had to pick up trash on the way in.

From what I've seen, Chik-Fil-A hires a different caliber of employee - the type that generally takes pride in a job well done, goes above & beyond the listed "job duties," is polite & helpful, & will take initiative. W/ the little trash test, it's just a way for them to help weed out the "not my job" types.

But it's not their job yet! If I worked there, I would definitely pick up the trash, because I would have pride in my place of employment's appearance. But on a job interview? I don't think I would feel responsible for the mess, honestly.

I wouldn't pick up the trash, but I would "delegate" aka tell a employee that it was there.
