Our last 2 cruises have been on the wonder and we absolutely love the classic ship. But now I have been reading and seeing all the new and cool things the other ships have and are getting and I am "wonder"in why the wonder hasn't had any updates? Pools? Kid clubs? Any ideas why?

The Wonder most likely would have the same re-imagining that the Magic had, except that by adding the "duck tail" (part of the superstructure work that was done), it would have made her too large to transit the current Panama Canal locks. Thereby not allowing her to transit to the west coast for her Alaska season.

As the new canal locks completion date has been pushed back (several times), DCL is most likely waiting until confirmation that they are finished before scheduling the necessary major dry dock.

So, currently the Wonder has only been undergoing "normal" dry dock procedures, and not adding any "new" stuff.

It hasn't had it's big dry dock yet. They've been holding off on it until the new Panama Canal is finished. They wouldn't be able to fit through the current one with the "ducktail" that will be added.

Ed. I was writing this as Shmoo was hers. Didn't mean to duplicate.

So when do you think they will announce new ships?
Will they spend all of the money on the wonder rehab like they did on the magic, or just do cosmetic changes to keep her shipshape?

I just got an email about a survey of our last trip on the wonder. They were asking opinions of the youth clubs, I'm guessing for input for redesign (?). It specifically asked my kids to answer some of the questions.

Either that or they are thinking about redesigning the Fantasy's kids spaces?

You really like the Wonder ---- and yet you want to see her changed?

Sorry, I wish that DCL would keep at least one ship with the "classic" look. I don't like that they are making the Magic (and probably the Wonder), basically, a Mini-Me of the Dream class ships.
Yea I like her size, it's easily navigated and doesn't seem crowded. I have 3 kids and they would definitely like to see something different in the kid clubs. They have seen YouTube videos about the new kid club spaces and I think it would be nice to have the kid clubs a little more themed.. Only been on the magic (before it was reimagined) and the wonder twice... After hearing about the new spaces for the dream I may have to see for myself...

I, too, am glad for one classic ship still in the fleet. We've sailed the Magic and the Fantasy as well, and it felt like something was missing.

Agree completely. We love the Wonder and look for sailing dates specifically on her. Especially don't like the change of Parrot Cay to Carioca's, just painted it white and changed lamps. If you look close on the beams and columns you can see the bird carvings under the paint. This makes me hope they will bring Parrot back after awhile.

We also like that the Wonder is different from the newer ships. They could update the kids clubs and still keep her the way she is.

Good point! Didn't realize that, thanks for mentioning it. We took the Wonder through PC and it sure was a tight fit.

And I'm with a lot of others that we love the Dream/Fantasy, but our heart belongs to the Wonder...as it is today.

Me too. We love the Fantasy, but the Wonder was my very first cruise ship and there will never be any ship like her for me. I know that the addition of the stern flap (a.k.a., "duck tail") is a good thing from the standpoint of increasing stability and efficiency and decreasing propulsion vibration, but I really don't want to see the profile of her hull altered.

They have gone through all the cabins on the Wonder and upgraded to the new beds (or they are just about done with that). So no more split beds available on any of the ships. :(

Can I ask what that duck tail part is people refer to on the other ships? Not sure what they mean?

Duck Tail

If you look close at the rendering of the post dry dock Disney Magic, there are some notable difference to the overall structure of the ship aside from the top deck.

It sure looks like there is structural change to the aft based on the latest rendering when compared to a real photo.

According to the post dry dock spec sheet, the Disney Magic will grow from 964 feet to 984 feet and gain 1,000 gross tons which appears to be from an addition to the stern in the form of a ducktail. Not DuckTales (although Uncle Scrooge would be a great addition); a ducktail. A duck tail is added on modern cruise ships to increase overall stability of the vessel by giving the ship a more stable base, thus allowing for cool new features.

Ducktail: An extension to ship’s stern. On older ships the diminished stability can be regained by adding a ducktail. Ducktail is also used on newbuildings; there the primary purpose is often to reduce the power consumption for propulsion.
