Love Bugs?

they have started in Tampa this weekend...had to wash the front of both our cars before the paint got eaten up. :scared1: Good news is I heard a few reports that since we are in the middle of a horrible drought it should be a light Love Bug Season...:goodvibes

Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap I spoke to soon! They came in sworms today where my wife and I work at. They were all over the entrance to the elementary school including the keypad to enter the building. I was told today that they are attracted to white/cold surfaces..don't know how true it is, but from what I saw it would support that.

Ok... I think I saw my 1st love bug on our trip 2 weeks ago. We were at CSR and saw a few of what my DS called "2 headed bugs":rotfl: at the bus stop. No swarms or anything....just a couple of individual bugs.

It cracks me up that so many people talk about this. I grew up in South Mississippi and they were just a part of life. At least they don't bite or sting or anything and you can't be allergic to them. They're just there. Doing their "thing".

Altho I can honestly see how if you've never seen them and you hear about some big swarm of bugs that that could freak you out. It would me.

I just keep thinking, "They're just lovebugs?!?!"
:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:

We were there the 1st to the 9th of May, and the second or third day there was a news story on the morning show about the Love Bugs showing up early this year. At that point we saw no signs of them. Fast forward to Thursday and I saw my first few, the next day a few more, and then our last morning (the 9th) they were all over the Magic Kingdom. Not intense swarms yet but you'd see a dozen at a time, then turn around and see more. We were quite happy to be on our way out as I had been before at their height (let's just say yuck!)

Sorry if this has already been asked, how long do they last/stay? We will be there in 5 weeks, I think my DS would think they were really cool. Will they still be around?

You'll probably still see a few - depends on how late they actually started. They build up in early May, get to teeming masses level, then usually start dwindling quickly. But a few stragglers are usually still around end of May and into June...but usually not in the thick clouds that are at the height of the season. If they got a late start though...you never know. I'm headed up June 3...so I'll find out soon enough!

We were at WDW last week and saw a "few" love bugs. Nothing like the year before thank goodness. There were enough to be a pest though. :headache:

:surfweb: Jennifer

As of today they're still not bad at all , I"ve only seen a very few.
And those were stuck on my car.

Bumping to see if there's any more updates. We leave in 16 days and I am terrified of bugs of any kind so I'm hoping they are gone (or at least scarce) when we go. I usually plan our WDW trips for times when I know the bugs won't be out (like Jan. with low crowds)...but this year we didn't have a choice...it was the end of May...or nothing.

When we went to the beach to watch the shuttle, the sand had lots of lovebugs right at the water. Sand was hotter than people so they seemed to stay on the sand and weren't bothering anyone. That was the most I have seen anywhere this year.

That's gotta be our beloved palmetto bugs. Those are the tropical version of a cockroach, except ten times bigger and they fly. FUN!

I remember seeing the palmetto bugs all over the place the first time we stayed at the Polynesian back in August 1988. Up here in NY, we call them "water bugs", and yeah, those things fly. :scared:

I hate those things, though after a while, you got used to seeing them crushed on the walkways all over the resort.

But those "love bugs", when we returned for our honeymoon back at the PR in May 1989, we saw them smeared on cars everywhere.

Made the palmetto bugs pale in comparison......

They are beginning to get fairly thick now. Unfortunately, I doubt they will be completely gone by the time you visit WDW. Try not to wear white or very light colors. Light colors attrack them.

Yup, I saw the first signs of them today in SC, so I'd imagine it'll get gross within the next couple weeks. Luckily I'll see them less at home (about 30 miles inland) than at work. I work at a vacation rental company on Kiawah Island and I'm sure we'll be swarming with them very soon. Yuck!

Thanks for the info. As long as they aren't swarming I should be ok. I did ask my dad about them because I remember us taking a trip to WDW when I was 11 at the end of May and he said that they were out at that time (not full force)...so If I don't even remember them then they must have not bothered me too much. I'll just do my best to ignore them and concentrate on my happy place :goodvibes

I just got back last night and didn't see very many at all. I saw one pair on the tram going to the Magic Kingdom, a couple of stray ones that I wouldn't have even noticed if I were not looking for them, and a couple of pairs by my door at my resort. I didn't get any on my rental car, but one day walking through the parking lot at Epcot we saw a couple of cars that were covered with them all over the front of the cars. I don't know where they drove there from, but it wasn't from the Disney area.
