Love Bugs?

Interesting...so tell me, do car rental companies charge you if you don't wash these buggers off before returning the vehicle? ;)

Oh yeah...they're here. It isn't the full black-out, where a white car appears to be black, with nothing but yellow-streaked windshield wiper carve-outs...but they're definitely here.

I'm hoping for pouring rain for my drive up in June. That's the only chance you have of them not getting all over your car.

Never heard of them until last year. Stayed in AKL Savannah view and could hardly go out on the balcony. The real pain was when I got into my room the INSIDE curtain was covered in them. :scared: I guess mousekeeping forgot to close the slider earlier or something. I went to complain and ask for someone to come remove the live bugs please. From the manager to the manager of housekeeping and several others, everyone treated me like I was insane. "This is Florida." "This is Animal Kingdom Lodge, it makes it more authentic." "We love the lovebugs". I just did not want them in my room!

Love bugs, while somewhat annoying due to their sheer numbers are completely harmless. Just have an answer prepared when your kids ask, "Why are they all stuck together?"

I'd much rather have a lovebug invasion than just about anything else. They don't bite, sting or do much of anything besides fly around. Well, that and the other thing they do.:rotfl2:

I have seen a few, a very few, this week in daytona Beach. I have heard on the local news that since it has been so dry in FL, the love bugs wont be so bad, But i will reserve judgement on that until the month progresses.

They are at WDW. Not in huge numbers but very noticeable esp when you have kids who scream bloody murder at the sight of bugs. :headache:

Ugh, don't they look pleasant  I've only been to WDW in January and April before, so I've never had the pleasure of experiencing these before. They outta be great when we go

We're thinking of going down next May...not quite sure yet...either then or Nov??? Anyway, is this the time the lovebugs start coming out then? We're thinking either the first or second week of May :confused3 would they be more likely to be out the second week or would it really not matter?

Thanks!

I can handle love bugs. I just don't want to have to deal with "no-see-ums."

We were in Orlando last May, right before Memorial Day weekend and the bugs were all over. It wasn't so bad in the parks but our rental car was disgusting. We returned it bugs and all and no one said a word or charged us extra.

I thought they only appeared in May and September...when we went in early May of 2004, they were a little annoying, but they weren't out in full force that early in the month, if I understand correctly.

:sunny:

That is what I was told last year when they checked into my room at AKL before I did. :scared1: May and September. And we were there like the last week into September into October 1. They were really bad at AKL. The last day was worse; the pool was swarmed by them. But honestly, I hardly noticed them in the parks. I know AKL can't spray for bugs like other resorts due to the animals, maybe that is why they are worse there? Do you think?

I also noticed they were worse when it was sunniest out. Early morning seemed ok.

I went the first week in May last year. They were out and about "doing their thing" but they didn't land on me or anything. They would fly right on by attached to each other.
I was REALLY scared about love bugs from what I had heard on this board. I have a serious fear of bugs, and it got me all worked up. I thought there was quite a bit of "hype."
I did, however, see one type of bug that was absolutely ENORMOUS. I saw it on a sidewalk at our resort coming back late at night. I thought it was a plastic toy at first until someone shouted out, "Look at the size of that ____ bug." I wish I could remember the name of it. It was one of the scariest things I have ever seen. Be afraid of that one, but not of the love bugs!

That's gotta be our beloved palmetto bugs. Those are the tropical version of a cockroach, except ten times bigger and they fly. FUN!

OMG yes!!! That is what it was called!!!! We don't have anything close to that size here in Wisconsin!!!

We grow our bugs big down here. You should see our grasshoppers, walking sticks, golden orb weaver spiders, centipedes, and mantises. We grow them all a bit bigger than the other states!

Just got back last night, and they were definitely there at the resort and parks. I saw them on day 1 (5/1) and there were more as the week went on, though they were not bothersome or swarming (yet).

Starting to see them here near Tampa...they should be in full force though by the 3rd-4th week of may though!!

They don't bite, they do love your cocktails:eek: ...so cover your drinks by the pools!!

They are a pain, luckily thought its only twice a year!!!

I have only seen one (ok, so technically two since it takes two to tango) so far about a week ago here in NE Florida. That was two weeks ago. Haven't seen any more since, which is a bit crazy, really. This far into May they should be out in full force already. Maybe they are dying off. Wouldn't cause anyone any lost sleep except the car wash places, I guess.

The do not bite, make noise, sting, or cause any harm to anything except car paint.
