Hey guys I am hoping you can help me out. I did work in Disney during love bug season and I do not want to go during love bug season for my honeymoon next year. We went to go in September 2008 because it is value season and it will be saving us money (we are getting a house in February). When is the worst time to go during love bug season b/c I have forgotten since I have been there? I really wanted to go the last week of September or mid september so I can go to the Mickey's not so scary halloween party. I also want to go to the water parks without being bothered by love bugs. Please help me out thank you :)

Well, good news and bad news. The good news is that you are getting married. The bad news is that the love bug season is typically May and September. You might be OK with the last week in September but that's stretching it a bit.

We love the love bugs. Cute little guys. Hope they are there in two weeks.

We were originally planning our wedding in September 2008 until I found out about those wretched creatures. We're moving it to either the second week of November or second week of December. They're so not worth dealing with. Yuck! :headache:

Unless you are getting married very early in the morning, I wouldn't risk September. The bugs are late risers though, I noticed last year they really didn't start hanging around the pool till around 11.

omigod, I forgot about the lovebugs..... I remember a ton of them almost all on me at the Pop and me screaming and swinging my bag at them....lol

We had lovebugs in mid sept last year and they were awful. They say they are really bad for about 2 weeks. We hit those 2 weeks. If your lucky you'll miss the worst of them.

Okay - we are going to be there 9/19-9/27...Now I'm a little spooked. We were there in Feb and had no problem with bugs at all. What are love bugs and how bad are they?

We were there last year the end of Sept to Oct 5th and we only had them for 2 days tops we woke up 1 morning and they were gone.
That's the first time in 4 years ( in a row) of going ( same time of year) that we have ever seen them. Friends that live about 20 minutes from Disney said they normally come around in late aug for about 1 to 2 weeks tops.

:) I love in southern alabama right by the flordia border. I live by and use to work on the army base here and it was alway interesting when people new to the area would get here and experience love bugs for the first time. As to what they are, tiny little black bugs, that um...are constantly in the act of breeding. They swarm down here in the south and make it so you have to wash your car constantly until they go away. I went down through Orlando to go to Bug Jam (southeatern vw car show) last year in the first week of Nov, and I don't remember any love bugs around. Congrats on getting married.

From Wikipedia: "The love bug (also known as lovebug, march fly, honeymoon fly, telephone bug, kissybug and double-headed bug) (scientific name Plecia nearctica) is a small flying insect common to the southern United States, especially along the Gulf Coast. .......Love bug swarms can number in the hundreds of thousands and blanket an entire small town in a dense cloud of insects. The thick swarming of these slow flying, almost drifting, insects almost is reminiscent of snow fall......The summer swarm occurs during late August and September. Swarms extend over periods of 4 to 5 weeks.":scared1:

Well, we went last September (the last week in September) and the bugs were a plenty! Now, Disney does a GREAT job with spraying but we did have loads of bugs we drove anywhere and around the doors of our hotel (Port Orleans). I'm sure they only spray the grounds and landscaping. They are not bad enough to keep us from getting the free dining plan again this September (9/22 - 9/29)! At least we know about them this time around.

They wont hurt you, they just want to love on you..... LOL

They are really really annoying.

When do the lovebugs typically come out in May? Right now I am looking at a 2009 trip from May 4-16. How bad is it really? It would be our very first trip to WDW (have been to DL many times) as well as our Honeymoon. Nothing is official yet (hope it will be soon).

Thanks for the info!!!!

are area's around the disney resorts bad? what about in the parks? What type of places to avoid? Water? Lakes?

They're everywhere, no way to avoid them. I've never figured out a pattern to their location, though I have heard people say that they're worse around the bus stops because they're attracted to exhaust fumes.

It's hard to think of any places where you won't find them, but do keep in mind that they're utterly harmless. They don't bite, all they do is land on your for a few seconds, then fly off again.

Does BugSpray work on them... my DW is an avid bug hater!!!!

We ran into them once around the third week of Sept. We never booked Sept. again.

Bug spray doesnt work. They were bad last year. Tell your wife not to wear white. Or she will be swarmed. They even land on you, and just will sit there until you smack them off. I use to be so fearful of bugs until
I had to deal with the lovebugs. I had no choice they were everywhere. It is very gross seeing a cluster of them. But, afterawhile you get use to it.

You can see a pic of them here the third bugs down.

We were there the last week of Sept 2006 and I thought they were worse around the pool. I didn't notice them as much at the parks.
