My daughter had hers done the last time we cruised about 1 1/2 years ago(she was about 6) on Castaway Cay because byt hte time she decided she wanted to do it, all of the times on the boat were booked. The girls on Castaway Cay were very good, but it definitely was painful for her. She had little tears coming out of the corners of her eyes! She had decided to only do the crown, not the whole head - mostly becaue I didn't want to pay a fortune. And she is glad she did just that portion! It only cost about $30 or so. Hers lasted a long time - weeks. We just washed them like you wash your hair usually and patted them dry. It was near the end of the trip so we only put sunscreen on the scalp a few times. But they looked pretty good for awhile. Taking them out was much less painful then going in! Her hair looked a little kinked, but straightened right out after we washed it. SHe has somewhat fine, straight hair. She has actually decided to do it again on our next cruise next month because it was so cute and kept her hair out of her eyes without much work!

My dd (4) had her hair briaded on the 1-22 Magic. She got 5 braids at $1 each. She and her dad surprised me with this. They just walked up and worked her in inbetween appointments. My husband said she never cried or said it hurt and she screams at home when we brush her hair or put it up into pony tails! We still have the braids in and they look fine, even the beads. We have even used sunscreen and have washed her hair at least 10 times and she has been in the pool a few times, too. We definately got our money out of these! Now if I can convience her we can't leave them in until our next cruise. (We haven't even booked yet!)

The prices people are quoting for braiding is unbelievable. I hope my DD does not ask because I will not pay that much money. She wouldn't really want it done anyway because she's very tenderheaded. She'd be one of those kids crying the whole time.

The prices are amazing.

It would be much cheaper to have the braids done before leaving home.
Shops here only charge about $20.00 to braid a child's hair.

I didn't think the price for corn-rows was too bad...I pay 20 bucks here for a couple french braids....

that being said, we did our dd's at CC. It took about 20 minutes and with tip it was 35.00
This is her eating school bread in Norway/Epcot about 6 days after she had them done. They stayed in a total of 2 1/2 weeks.

I think that we've decided to get them done on the ship. Can anyone tell me the details? How do we sign up? When and where? Do they have pics so that you can pick your styles? We'll probably try and have it done on Nassau day after an excursion. Is this a good time? Thanks again! :goodvibes

If you get them done on the ship, don't wait too long to make your appointment because they do book up. The ladies are very busy on sea days. Dd (9) had cornrows done to the front/crown of her head (25 + tip) on the ship about halfway through the cruise and it took about 45 minutes. Yes, it was a splurge, but I figured the whole cruise was a splurge! The ladies on board did a great job (and dd has a "sensitive" head, lol) and we left them in for about 3 weeks afterwards. I was thinking that it would have been better to have them done at the beginning and keep her hair out of her face, but there is that sunburn factor. All the kids at school, neighborhood and softball team thought they were so cool and I briefly thought about making it a permanent hair style (hair out of the eyes).... Hair conditioner makes it much easier to remove the braids.

I'm not sure how to insert an image (I'm on a Mac), but I do have a picture of dd getting her hair braided.

I questioned getting braids onboard on the Grand Cayman day since we didnt like the port and they had an opening. I decided against it because I wanted to wait more towards the end of the trip so that I could still have family photos taken without them. I did notice that on Thursday (sea day) they were taking sign ups for braiding on CC at 9am by the shop treasure ketch. I ended up getting mine done in Cozumel on Paradise Beach for 20$ and that was just the front part of my hair. They did a good job, not as tight as I wanted them but looked good nonetheless. Castaway Cay signs said $1 each braid and $2 dollars per corn row.

We also had our daughter's hair done on the Magic on the 1/22 sailing. We booked outside of the theater on the first night, and many of the appts. were already taken.

She had headband style- 10 cornrows with 2 beads at the end of each braid. She got to pick the colors and it was $2 a braid ($20 total) and we tipped $5.

We brought our own comb and brush but we did see other combs in sanitizer like they use at the salon.

It is still in 2 weeks later. She loves them and won't let me take them out. It was great keeping her hair out of her eyes for all of the water activities and we got them the day AFTER formal pics.

I had asked around on the ship to those who had it done on the islands and it was very common to spend $100 + for one person.
