Lost luggage!!! UPDATE FOUND!!!! pg 2 post 23

$500 (cheapest option) to ship 2 large pieces of luggage roundtrip... and you have to give them a week for your luggage to reach its destination on either end.

It's not convenient, inexpensive OR efficient.

While it may be trend (your word, not mine) or fad, it appears to be too cost-prohibitive to be growing. I can't see a travel expert actually recommending this unless there's some reason you are completely unable to manage your own luggage.

I would agree that the price and the amount of time needed doesn't seem to be a sensible choice but I can also see the other point of view...some people are willing to pay (a lot) to not have to deal with their luggage at the airport.

I don't recall if the artcle stated what kind of money that these companies were making but it did imply that these companies had lots of customers.

Which talking heads are those? I haven't seen a single one promote shipping luggage via Fedex or UPS. Doesn't mean there isn't somebody saying that, I've simply never heard one.

FOUND!!! :woohoo: 1am eastern time they found the bag and dropped it off for DS!!!!

Now this gets funny. Yesterday they told him to go purchase jeans and a sweatshirt (as it is cold in the east). He did that. He saved the two receipts for reimbursement. USAir gave DS the address to send the receipts for reimbursement.

We JUST moved July 1st to SoCal. DS has flown to RI (we USED to live in MA) for a college gala on Saturday night, as well as a interview for the MBA program/Hall Director's position.

USAir called his cell at 3am eastern and told them that they have looked further into the missing bag and noted that he was flying to his HOME and they will NOT reimburse him for the jeans and sweatshirt. :scared1:

So they cannot get you a bag ON TIME but they can become dectectives and find out all this info on my DS.

He has to show PROOF that he does indeed LIVE in SoCal before any reimbursements.....well he has his paycheck and we just got our voter registration cards in the mail.

GIVE ME A BREAK...........:headache:

Peter Greenburg also advocates using 'rule 240' which hasn't been in effect since it was abolished with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978.

That's not uncommon - why would they reimburse when people are returning to their normally well-stocked homes?

Glad that it was found

There are a number of questionable 'travel experts' who are often quoted online. I often caution readers against The Consumerist, for instance.

I like the ones who suggest calling the hotel general manager for a better rate. Everyone go ahead and try and call the GM of the GF and ask for a better deal than you get from CRO - go ahead, see how far you get! But that is regularly recommended by the 'experts'.

There is one travel expert who I do trust on this forum - the one who works for an airline, and not in a front line capacity.

Ohhh...ITA!!! But we do NOT live in MA anymore and DS graduated from college (RI) May '08....we are now in SoCal. :goodvibes But USAir has the time to research my DS' info enough to realize that we USED to live there and MAY still live there hence NO reimbursement...:headache:

We are s l o w l y getting everything changed to our SoCal address. DS works here in SoCal fulltime and will just enclose a copy of his paycheck when seeking reimbursement for the jeans and sweatshirt he needed.

In the meantime USAIR, all DS' belongings are in SoCal. ::yes::

I did go on USAir's website last night and it indeed says no reimbursment if you are returning to YOUR home. :thumbsup2

Has he updated his information with US Airways? Maybe the address in their computers is the old one.

Is Peter paying for it?
:rotfl2:

I did a quote on here recently for someone. Outrageous fees! It's got to be profitable for the luggage shipping companies. For that much money I could BUY new clothes in Orlando LOL!

Glad he finally got the bag, even if you still have the hassle of the reimbursement.

Our last trip home from WDW one our bags didn't make it and they couldn't tell us anything. It was delivered to our house (2 hours from the airport) the next day with a notice inside that it had been inspected. Must have been our sons' lightsabers that made it suspicious. :rotfl2:

If I read the thread correctly, they lost his luggage that he brought with him from his home in So Cal. Why shouldn't they reimburse him?

Yes, OP here, your are right, why shouldn't they reimburse DS? DS does not get home until Monday and we are definitely putting in for the reimbursements.

I spoke to TWO agents at USAir lost luggage dept. They gave me their names as well as their employee id # to authorize the purchase of the new jeans and sweatshirt AND I will include a copy of our lease which has DS' name on it as well as DH & I. Sooo....that should be all the proof they need!!!

Pain in the butt BUT in the end we are thrilled he has his luggage. :goodvibes

Praying that the flight home to SoCal will be UNeventful.

My issue with Fedex has been that the driver making the delivery doesn't get it where it needs to be and it returns to the Fedex Facility for delivery the next day... or the day after... or the day after that... ;)
Now, see, I prefer FedEx to UPS - because if UPS has a package for me that I must have, I can arrange to pick it up between 8 and 9 PM, but if FedEx has one, their drivers are generally back by 6 and I can pick it up then. In fact, FedEx once actually sent a driver back to my apartment the same day with a delivery I had to have (prescriptions); UPS won't do that.

OP, it sounds like you all had a good attitude and things are turning out as best they can. :)
