I'm not overweight but for vanity reasons would like to lose 10lbs to get back to my HS weight. I was wondering if I could do this by walking everyday. I usually walk for a half hour 5 days a week so obviously I would need to step that up. Has anyone lost weight just by adding more walking to their daily routine? Would love some details, thanks!

I do two miles on most days.
It hasn't done a thing for that last, hard to lose 10 pounds.

Sorry! Probably not what you wanted to hear.

lol thanks!!! how long does 2 miles take?

I have! After I had my son instead of loosing weight I gained 10 pounds! I lost 40 pounds total mostly by walking. I truly believe it is possible!

Even if it doesn't help you lose weight, it'll help you tone your body.

I lost about 35 pounds mostly from walking. I used to walk about 50 minutes at lunch and 1 hour (sometimes 1-1/2 hrs) after work at a fast pace, usually 5 days a week and sometimes on the weekend.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep it up & those 35 pounds I lost, I found most of them again.:worried:

Good luck & keep at it. Important thing is to find something you enjoy, so if you enjoy walking, you are more likely to stick to it.

It is possible but not just a slow, leisurely walk. You need to walk fast enough to raise your heart rate and work up a sweat. You should be breathing hard but still able to carry on a conversation.

I have lost 25 lbs. since April just by walking and cutting back on sugar and carbs in my diet. I don't count calories. I walk 2-3 miles 5 or 6 days a week. Between 30-45 minutes.

Yes, walking is def. GREAT!!!!!
But, just might be effective, alone, on hard to lose weight.

In the summer, I walk our dog, about one mile... at a walking pace. (can't really power-walk or jog with the dog!) I do this in the mornings when it is cool.

In the evening, before sunset, unless it is Winter, we walk our dog. The same approximate mile. About a half mile up the road (more country, not city) and back.

I would say that it can take 30 minutes.

In the winter, I often do things like Leslie Sansone's videos.
If I have time to fit them in in the evening.

Yes... THIS.

And, take a good look at the foods, habits, little vices, that could be really hindering that weight loss.

I highly recommend strength training instead. It shapes you muscles so you look good as well as weight loss.

I think walking helps a lot but i've read that 75-80% of you over/under weight is based on your diet.

It should help, provided you don't "compensate" or "reward" yourself with extra food.

Most exercise doesn't burn nearly as many calories as people think, and most food has more calories than people realize.

If I walk fast I do about 15 minute miles. To find out how many calories you burn, if you have a smart phone you can download map my run, it has setting for many types of exercise. My fitness pal is another way to track what you eat and exercise.

I found that I was burning many less calories walking than I thought. The only way to lose weight is to eat less, exercise more.

I do almost 3 miles in about 40 minutes 3-4 times per week. When I was 30, or even 40, I could have lost weight easily doing that. At 53, it doesn't work without some serious dieting too. Cutting back on calories I've lost almost 7 pounds since May. If nothing else, I'm aerobically healthy. I need to lose about 25 lbs so, slow and steady.

If you are very overweight and very sedentary, a 30 minute walk, 5 days a week will probably help you start to lose weight.

If you aren't very overweight (just have those last 10 lbs to lose) and are generally a mobile person, a 30 minutes walk just won't do it.

You probably need to walk more like an hour and make sure that at least 30 minutes of that walk is pretty intense.

Increasing your walking isn't going to drop your weight all that fast. If you want to decrease your weight, you need to decrease your calories.

*To lose 1 pound a week, cut 500 calories a day
*To lose 2 pounds a week, cut 1000 calories a day

Don't go below 1000 calories unless you're doctor is supervising. Extremely low cal diets can result in hair loss and problems with your electrolytes.

You really shouldn't count on losing that last 10 pounds quickly--that's the hardest poundage to get off~ Quick weight loss diets, cleanses, pills and that sort of thing will work fast, but all it does is burn off water weight. As soon as you start eating again, the 10 pounds will come right back on. But if you stick with your low carbs and monitor your calories, you should be able to get to your goal within 5-7 weeks. :goodvibes

I've got about 8 lbs to lose - we upped our walking this summer to everyday for at least an hour. My friend and I walk FAST! I didn't lose anything. Once school started, walking more like 4-5 days a week and I've lost 1lb in a month. Also started yoga in July. I can feel a difference with that.

I've found that watching what I eat really helps. I used to do wii-fit for an hour and then walk for an hour. That helped me lose.

I know someone who was/is an athlete. So used to do weights/intense workouts etc. Plays ball.

She lost weight just by walking an hour a day. Stopped all other. Once in awhile she'll do an intense workout just to make sure she's still strong on the court. And she walks at a very slow pace. The equivalent of about 2.9 tops on the treadmill.

The reason she gained a bit, even though she was an athlete was age and moving away from a more active environment at the time.

No food changes made. Not one.

I truly believe at a certain age - walking is probably about meditation/relaxation and not pumping up stress hormones more than anything. So much of weight is about the balancing of hormones for women after a certain age.
