We just got back from our AT trip. We decided to arrive in the Lorton area the night before to remove any last minute stress from traffic. We stayed in the Holiday Inn Express in Springfield. The hotel is a new property and is clean and well maintained. There are many resteraunts nearby. This is a good choice if you need a hotel.
Mt Vernon is near the Lorton area. We stopped over there late afternoon. If you buy your ticket late in the day they will give you the second day free. We had time only to tour the mansion. There was no line and we had just two other people on our tour. The next morning we went back and the line for the mansion stretched down the road, so it was good that we did it the day before. We toured the out buildings and grounds and then had lunch at their food court. We then headed over to the train around 1:30. The check in line for the cars took an hour. The train had arrived late and they started checking in late.
