Just wondering about the area close to the Autotrain. We are giving ourselves plenty of time to get there, but if we get there too early, I don't want to be sitting around for hours. Are there any restaurants or stores close by, thought we could grab lunch, maybe fill up the cooler, pick up some snacks, etc. Also, what time do you recommend checking in - we will have a van. Thanks!

After taking exit 163 from I-95 and turning left onto Lorton Road at the light, you will find the exit for the Auto Train a very short distance on the left. If you go past the turnoff for the Auto Train, practically across the street you will see a strip shopping center on your right. Its only been open a year or two. There is a Shoppers grocery store there (a large chain in this area) and a Carribou Coffee, as well as some other small shops. The Shoppers has a prepared food area where you can buy sandwiches, hot food and salads, although there is nowhere to sit down to eat it.

There is also a Burger King and McDonald's close by, but they are not in the same convenient shopping center.

I live maybe 2 miles from the Auto Train and have lived here for 14 years, so I know this area very well. Let me know if you have more questions.

As close as I live, I have never ridden the Auto Train, but I might try it next year. From what I've read, I believe you are supposed to be there about two hours before departure time, which would be about 2 PM; AmTrak can probably clarify that for you.

Sounds great, thanks for the info. Funny you've never tried the AT living so close. This is a first for us, a new adventure. We've driven and flown, I'm interested to see how train travel compares. Thanks again!

Here is a link to a Google map showing how close the Shoppers Food Warehouse is in respect to the Auto Train.<http://maps.google.com/maps?q=9409+Lorton+Market+St,++Lorton,++VA++22079&
ie=UTF8&ll=38.701922,-77.214618&spn=0.01554,0.027294&z=15> You would turn right on Lorton Market Square Road, not Gunston Cove Road.

Keep in mind you do not have access to your vehicle during the trip. If you pack food in the cooler and leave it in your vehicle with the intent of going back and taking snacks out of it during the train ride, this isn't going to happen (for your own safety and that of others). If you put food in the cooler thats intended to be used during your WDW vacation it should be just fine. However, everyone is allowed two pieces of carry-on luggage. I don't know if coolers are allowed as carry-on luggage. You may want to look into it.

My DSIS and I are actually talking about an Auto Train trip next year. The main reason I haven't done it before is the cost; airfares have aways been waaaay less expensive and a lot faster. But, we're getting weary of all the rules for flying now, not to mention all the things that can go wrong (scheduling changes, cancellations, added fees, etc.) and with the Auto Train practically in my back yard, the only real driving we would have to do is between Sanford and WDW, maybe 20-30 miles. Piece o' cake.

In that same convenient shopping center with the Shoppers Food Warehouse is a good Indian restaurant- My Korma- as well as a Japanese Steakhouse, Chinese, Quiznos subs, sports bar, and pizza place. There may be a couple of other spots that I can't remember as well. Plenty of places to get a good lunch before getting on the train.

Thanks again, this is exactly what I was looking for. We plan on bringing a small handheld cooler on the train with a few extra drinks and snacks for the kids. A tip I picked up here on the Dis.

An Indian place, oh no, that's DH's favorite, the rest of us are not fans though! Now Chinese food...yum! We may have to split up for lunch. Of course this is only if we get there early and have time to kill.

We got a great deal I think, just about $700 for the 5 of us and our van. We couldn't fly and rent a car for that these days! We're not too worried about the time since we usually end up driving anyway (many reasons).
I'll have to post a trip report when we get back, let everyone know how it was. Wish us luck!

Subbing.
We will be taking the a/t in 13 days!!!

yes. very good info. it's good to know that there will be somewhere to go after we drop off truck. i sure hope Sanford has something close to that station, also. - Kris we miss you by 1 day, we leave next fri.

Is that round trip? Are you just doing coach or did you get a sleeper car?

Yes, round trip in coach. For a family of 5 we would have to get 2 sleeper cars which isn't in the budget. Much more expensive.

Tink's Pixieduster - do you have any suggestions for hotels in your area? We are thinking of driving down the day before our auto train trip to avoid any stress causing traffic or weather delays. We can stay anywhere within an hour's drive from you and like clean and friendly hotels...They don't have to be fancy...Thanks

Yes, I do. To make it really easy, when you exit I-95 on exit 163 (Lorton Road), instead of turning left for the Auto Train, turn right. You will immediately come to a second traffic light (Silverbrook Road) and on your right you will see a Comfort Inn http://www.hotels.com/property.jsp?...s&utm_campaign=yahoo+ssp&mcid=yahoo.feeds.ssp. Its the closest place to stay to the Auto Train. There is no restaurant inside (but they do offer a continental breakfast), but there is a BK across Silverbrook Road, as well as a small Chinese restaurant and pizza place. There are also other places nearby, like the shopping center we discussed earlier, and even more. If you need more options or specifics, let me know.

It doesn't get much simpler than having the Auto Train and your motel maybe 200 yards of each other.

Thanks Tink - I have read that your reservation can get bumped for military deployments (which I completely understand). Can you also recommend any other towns or areas where we might look? Thanks!

I think this situation could happen almost anywhere in this area since there are there are multiple military bases in the vicinity, and as many times as I've driven past that particular Comfort Inn I have never seen its parking lot full. I don't think a bump is likely.

But, since I am also a firm believer in contingency plans, here's an alternative or two:

First, I-95 runs right through Springfield, which you would reach about 5 miles before the Auto Train exit. There are several hotels in Springfield - Holiday Inn Express, Hilton, and Best Western to name three. But, Springfield can be very difficult to maneuver around since this is the area called The Mixing Bowl, with multiple flyover ramps and, if I remember right, 12 or 15 lanes of traffic. This is where the Beltway - I-495 - converges with I-95/I-395. I avoid this area, and I live here.

The second alternative is to pass the exit for the Auto Train and drive another 5-7 miles or so further south to the Potomac Mills area (Woodbridge) where there is a Holiday Inn Express. http://www.hiexpress.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hotel/WDDVA/welcome. They have a small indoor pool, offer hot breakfast bar, and are right next door to Romano's Macaroni Grill (Italian restaurant chain), and On the Border (Mexican restaurant chain). Its a pretty easy off and on from I-95 at that location. From I-95, you would take Exit 158B. Turn left at the 3RD traffic light on to Telegraph Road. The hotel is on the right. After exiting I-95 and before turning onto Telegraph Road you will pass a Target on the right, if there is anything you need but forgot to pack. Actually, there are TONS of restaurants and shopping in that area, including a Disney Store Outlet at Potomac Mills (a very nice, and huge, outlet mall), which is just down the road from the hotel. The next day, you would just double back the way you came to get back to the Auto Train.

I still think you would be fine with the Comfort Inn location, but I think this would be a good alternative. It just depends on whether you want to be closer to the Auto Train or have more amenities around you. Either choice is a good one.

We have take the auto train on two different round trips. It has worked out well. Our kids actually really enjoy it. We did the a sleeper everytime except once and will never go without it again. My kids are way too young to sit in coach (6, 4 & 1). They were excellent and very well behaved but it is so tiring trying to occupy them for so long. AT least in our sleeper we can close the door and let them get up and walk around etc.

As far as arrival time. You don't have to check your car in until 2pm. I suggest taking your time (if there early) checking-in. DO what you want ahead of time such as getting lunch etc. Also, they do have a little store with sandwiches, snacks, drinks magazines etc. in the terminal. It realy doesn't matter the order they put the cars in because all the train cars are put on in random order. In other words the first one on isn't necessarily the first one off. We found that out the hard way. Actually the last time we went on we were close to the last on and one of the first off.

In Sanford, they also have a place to get snacks etc. The main road that leads to the train station also has fast food places (I don't remember which ones). Also, the station in Sanford is extremely small. Not many people fit inside. Be prepared to have to wait outside, especially if it is hot.

There is always plenty of snacks being offered on the train as well. They seem to have something out all day. Usually cookies, crackers and cheese, pretzels, fruit and water. Also, they give you dinner and breakfast. Nothing real fancy but it does the job. If I remember correctly you have to pay for any soda or alcohol. We pretty much drank water and that was it. We did bring a couple of gallons on with us. We drank that but never even touched the snacks we brought. Next time I won't bother with those.

Hope this helps.

How long does it take to unload the train of all cars once it gets to Sanford? I'm seriously looking at taking DS on a Disney cruise alone next summer, ahead of my husband flying down the following week. The thought of me driving the entire 17 hours on I-95 isn't that appealing, and I've always wanted to try the AT.

We just took the AT in May and loved it. :cool1: We arrived in Lorton at around 1pm and just got quick lunch at Burger King. We checked in at the station at around 2pm and there is a little playground for the kids to play in and a little gift/snack shop as well. We walked around outside and watched cars being loaded and just generally took it all in. They begin boarding at around 3pm so the wait really wasn't that bad. Once boarded we dropped all of our stuff at our seats and headed for the club car for snacks. It wasn't so bad waiting to board but it seemed like an eternity to get our car upon arrival. I guess once we were off the train we just wanted to get going. In reality it was only about 30-45 minutes.

I would not advise planning to check in/drop vehicle and try to leave for lunch or shopping as someone had posted. The station is not situated so that you would be able to leave once checked in.

We also packed a small cooler and didn't even eat but a couple of things we packed. I will know for next time to cut on the snacks. Of course, I thought I was packing too much from the beginning but, being the ultimate worrier I am, I was afraid if we had a huge delay the train might run out of food and it would be every man for himself. :rotfl2:

Like I said, we loved the AT and won't hesitate to take it again on our next trip. I was actually sad to get off the train. (at both stations) :sad1:

Have a great trip

Thanks for all the great info everyone. And it's nice to hear from people who enjoyed the experience. We are going next week, can't wait!!

If you have a teenager BRING SNACKS. We overdid it on the snacks, but I was glad we had some.
