Loonie/Toonies for mousekeeping

Hello, I want to get envelopes ready in advance for mousekeeping, however $1 bills are not that easy to get a hold of here. Has anyone ever given out loonies/toonies to them instead of US bucks?

I guess I have to ask....what the heck are they going to do with Canadian Currency? - sorry, but if you feel you need to give a tip (which I personally don't thinkis necessary) however, give a phone card or something. Canadian Currency is pointless

For tip $, we break a couple of US 20's when we arrive at the resort
(we tip $5/day)

sorry I agree w/ the PP, I can't see tipping in Canadian currency in FL - maybe in Niagara Falls but not so far south IMO

Canadian coins are not accepted anywhere in the US. So, the housekeepers can't exchange it.

The same goes for US coin, it's not accepted here.

I've never had any trouble getting a quantity of US singles from the bank here. We will get about $25-$35 worth before we go to the Caribbean for tipping. Your bank can order it ahead of time, but most likely they will have it one hand.

The U.S banks won't take coins. So you would just be throwing your loonies and twoonies away. Mousekeeping might even think you are "loonie" (They might not even realize that it is real money in another country!!!!)

Whenever I visit Mexico or the Caribbean, I make sure that I have at least $200 in $1 U.S. bills. Our bank doesn't always stock that much so I go the week before we leave and place an order - that way they will be sure to have them for me.

Buzz & Woody, tipping is a personal choice, I promise not to try to convince you to tip if you promise not to try to get others not to.

Changing Canadian money into the US even if it is bills isn't as easy as it is here in Canada either!! My in-laws in New Jersey had to go to a New York bank to buy Canadian money for their trip here - no bank in NJ would accept it or dispense it!!!

Plus, coin means nothing....Out of curiousity why would it be hard to get US $1?? I go to Maine a couple of times a year and always have tons of $1's.

American money is much better. Canadian coins not so good. Can you take your coins to local bank and exchange for U.S. ones? Much better for mousekeeping....

I agree, CAD coins would be completely useless to Mousekeeping.

Call ahead to your bank, let them know you need to order some USD Currency, and that you will need X amount in $1.00's... it is super easy, banks only need 24 hours notice to get it into your specific branch, but unless you are planning on taking down thousands of dollars, you can normally just go into the teller any time without calling ahead and get at leas a few hundred.

or take 20's and buy a pack of gum at the airport... Voila, $1's!!!

i too tip because often, housekeeping is paid a lower wage, just like waitresses/waiters, because of tips.

i would think that if you chose not to use us$$$, then yes maybe a gift/token would be appreciated.

otherwise, just convert some money when you check in. and have a great trip!

Last year I tipped $2. a night and the mousekeepers went out of their way to leave lots of extra soaps and towels. Also, they made our towels into animals. The couple we were staying with didn't and they were always perplexed about why they never got any animal towels. I finally told the DH and he left some $$ for the tip as his wife wouldn't She's a good soul, but a little cheap So when they returned they too had cute little towels etc. It was quite funny actually, b/c before they left every morning, the DH would somehow make an excuse to go back to the room for something he had 'forgotten,' just so he could leave a tip. I remember how great it was for people to leave me tips when I cleaned rooms. It all helps- and plus they really do get paid very little.

No....the US banks will not take Canadian coin. The Canadian banks won't take US coins either.

The only places that you even have a hope of getting coins exchanged is at an airport currency exchange. However, the rates are not as good and they charge a fee for the service.

Hope OP won't mind if I piggyback my question on this thread.

I was thinking of putting a note inside the envelope with the tip to ask mousekeeping to leave the envelope behind so that it could be refilled for the next day. I am not very crafty and I have 2 rooms so the idea of making up 14 envelopes makes me grit my teeth.

Do you think this would be tacky?

Let's get real. These people are barely making minimum wage trying to feed their families. They don't give a rat's behind what kind of packaging their tip comes in. Many of these hard working people barely speak English let alone read it. Now you want them to leave the envelope? Just put the money on the table and write "housekeeping". They are not feeling the Disney "magic" like us. Give them a break.
