Looks like our trip in a couple of weeks will have to be canceled.

My grandmother has been very sick in the hospital since Friday before last. She has been living with a hiatal hernia for many years and didn't have it operated on because she didn't want to if she didn't have to. Well, hers is paraesophageal and what happened is that her stomach ended up in her chest cavity, twisted. (If she had known this was even a slight possibility, she would have had the surgery a long time ago; the surgeon she consulted with didn't take it very seriously years ago, tbh.) It's a miracle she didn't die according to her doctors. She had to be rushed in for emergency surgery and although that went well, she aspirated vomit and is now on a ventilator, which is trying to help her get over pneumonia. She's 82 and has COPD, so this is a tall order. If you wish, please say a prayer for her recovery. I also mention all this to say that if you know someone with a hiatal hernia, please make sure they go to the doctor ASAP if they have issues with it or back pain in the shoulder area, as that can actually be pain from the hernia/stomach. Please relay this story to anyone you know who has a hiatal hernia.

Anyway, I have those days off at the end of the month (I live in Nevada and home is in Tennessee, where my gran is), so I'm going to hope that all goes as well as it can and go visit her instead. Disneyland isn't going anywhere, so we can go later in the year if we want.

I've only reserved the hotel and a couple of ADRs, so those are easily cancelable.

Wow, sorry you have to go through all that.

Will definitely be saying some prayers for you and your family.

Poor grandma.

Doctors are funny. In your grandmother's case, they took it too lightly, and she would have had the surgery if she had known. In my MIL's case her GP *over*diagnosed her, drastically overpresented risks to her about what HE thought was wrong with her heart, and scared her into never EVER doing anything about her heart because his prognosis was "must have open heart surgery, 5% chance of living". This is a GP! When I finally dragged her to a cardiologist, the GP had the diagnosis all wrong, and things have been easily manageable. There's something the cardio would like to look further into, but because the GP scared her so much, she won't. There is nothing about what the cardio wants to look into that would end up in open heart surgery, but she just can't hear that. Thankfully he's respectful, and won't push it, because he knows she would refuse *any* surgery, because of what the GP did and said.

So sorry your grandma is not doing well. Grandmas are so special. You will not regret your decision to spend time with her. Praying for you and your family.

Aww, so sorry you had to cancel! But you're right, Disneyland isn't going anywhere! Enjoy your time with your Grandma, I'm sure she'll enjoy your presence and attention.

Thanks, everyone.

She has improved and they wanted to try to wean her off the vent today, but her lung capacity is not where it should be yet, so they're going to wait until that has improved before they try again.

I'll put your gram in prayers as well. Safe travels back to Tenn! And you're right DL will always be there. (Thanks for info on a hiatal hernia btw, I'd never heard of such a thing.)
