Lookout Cay long pier.

Does anyone else think that Disney just might, might, in the future, monetize golf cart rides to and from? Possibly limited amounts of them?
Anything is possible, but I strongly doubt this would happen. As is evident from this thread, some people need transportation for medical reasons. DCL has no way to differentiate people who “need” golf carts from those who “want” golf carts. (A initial attempt to define those who needed carts as those in accessible staterooms was apparently quickly abandoned.) Making people who need carts in order to reach the island pay extra for them would be a really bad look.

I could see Disney providing additional transportation such as bicycles or Segway-like scooters at a cost, since those would clearly be an option for people who want them rather than a necessity for people who need them.

No. I don't think there is any way this would happen.

You mean make people pay to ride them? I highly doubt that would ever happen

r.e. bold -- Thinking that railings would need to be installed for an *OOPS, someone accidently went off the pier for a swim*

Well right now you have to rent a cabana on Castaway Cay to get a guaranteed golf cart without having to jump through hoops. That cost extra.
If "jump through hoops" means asking for one at guest relations then I suppose you are correct. It strikes me as a pretty low hoop though.
Didn't know that. I thought all CL guest were entitled to a golf cart. Hmmm......
Any guest is entitled to a golf cart if needed. We've sailed in both concierge and non-concierge and been able to get a golf cart ride at Castaway Cay more than once.

It would be a bad look for DCL to charge for golf cart rides. However, what if they allowed locals to operate pedi-cabs to bring you back to the ship?

No one can fall off the pier
Seeing the height of the railings on videos, could be misjudging the height, if a Segway operator or bicycle rider had any speed I'm thinking they could still go over -- personal experiences with bicycle oops. I am dealing with the end results of an OOPS yesterday morning and thankfully that one did not need a trip to ER.

Sorry to hear about your oops, but details matter. Segway has a very low center of balance so it’s not going to flip it and you over… also for a bike you’d pretty much need a perpendicular hit at reasonable speed to throw you over the high over the handlebar and that’s not going to happen on that narrow pier.. most collisions of possible consequence is going to be a glancing blow and the inward curve on the rails is going to spill someone onto the pier not over. Hope you didn’t break anything.

Never say never.

Fair enough I deal in probabilities so you would think I’d know better, but I never, oops almost never, assume never means 0.00000 but means not realistically going to happen. Lightening strikes are a remote possibility but even more remote if simple precautions are taken. I stand by the original spirit of my post. I do forget how black and white people can be.

Anything is possible. I remember people scoffed at the idea of paid fast passes and sure enough they came up with paid lightning lanes.

It's my opinion there were probably other options but DCL went the cheap route. I find it amusing that whenever someone is critical of Disney here the same people belittle the person making those critical observations. It's almost like they work for Disney's PR machine. 🙂
You are crazy if you think this represents the "cheap route". A reinforced concrete open trestle pier costs north of $2 million per 100 linear feet. The cheap route is dredging for a tender opening to a marina, or dredging and building a short dock like at CC.

Wonder why that turn around loop that was originally projected got scrapped? Did they originally have plans to transport everyone via a tram from the boat?

it was an artists rendition... we see that a lot with the parks, early plans get modified. there will be lots of theories why.

Besides doing the "cheap" route, they were also required to comply with the environmental concerns of the island. Digging a canal and building a marina/dock are much more environmentally unfriendly.
