Since I've had so many people email me asking what I am renting, I figure I should explain it here.
I am a Disney Vacation Club member, which essentially means that I own Disney Timeshare. We are allocated a certain number of points every year, depending on how many we purchase in our initial contract. These points are used to book time at the 7 Disney Vacation clubs and beyond. The number of points required vary depending on resort, size of unit and time of year.
For example:
A studio (up to four people and an infant) at Disney Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa is 95 points for the week of September 2-9.
A two bedroom (up to eight people) at the Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge is 270 points for the same week.
These are vacation homes rather than hotel rooms. This means ALOT more room and amenities. A studio comes with a kitchenette (microwave, fridge, sink, cutlery, etc), patio, and laundry facilities on site. A one/two/three bedroom comes with a full kitchen (stove, diswasher, fridge, microwave, etc), dining room, living room, whirlpool, patio, washer and dryer, etc). However, they still have all the perks of a hotel like pools, restaurants, Disney transportation, etc.
These units can be booked with Disney like regular hotels put are extremely expensive. The studios start at $259 USD a night during value season and are more expensive during high season.
Because I own my points, I am able to rent them out to people who would like to stay at the Disney Vacation Clubs. It's a win-win situation because my points don't go to waste and the renter saves tons of money.
example:
I rent my points out at $10 USD per point ($12.50 CDN)
7 nights at the Villas at Disney's Wilderness Lodge is 270 points
$10 x 270 = $2700 USD
The exact same reservation through Disney costs $4331.81 USD
Disney Vacation Club guests have the same perks as other hotel guests, including Disney's Magical Express, Extra Magic Hours, Pool hopping, etc.
Please note that this is a perfectly legitamate way to stay a Disney Vacation Club and that Disney is fully aware that this occurs frequently. In fact, for those who don't know, there is a whole forum dedicated to renting points out on Disboards!
If you do decide to rent, you would give a 25% deposit upfront and the rest would be due 31 days prior to checkin. The reservation confirmation would be sent to you under the renter's name and you would be able to call Member Services to ensure that it's in good standings.
I hope this explains renting DVC points a little better. If you have any questions, feel free to PM or email me
