Target has two portable DVDs on sale (one now, one on Black Friday) and I am wondering if either is a good deal. The one on sale now is a 7-inch Phillips player for $45, and the one on sale Friday is a 9-inch RCA player for $55.

We tend to take a couple of long car trips a year, which is why I am thinking about getting one of thse. So it wouldn't be getting an extreme amount of use.

On Amazon, there is only one review for the Phillips model and it is bad, because the player stopped working. The reviews for the RCA model are mixed--some say it is a good deal, some say it stopped working.

ANy advice?

Just following along as we are planning on buying a portable DVD player as a family gift this Christmas. We had a Panasonic one years ago, but it seems the reviews have gone downhill since we needed one.

My advice - see if Target offers an extended warranty on them.

These are the only items I ever made money on with a warranty. I bought at least 3 or 4 of them at Circuit City with the warranty (I'd buy them two at a time for DS and DD for long trips). When they died, I'd return them and get a new one with warranty along with a refund of the unused term of the warranty, and usually a store credit to boot (old item cost more than replacement).

Eventually Circuit City closed. When the last one of these I had a warranty on croaked, I contacted the warranty company and they sent me a check for the original price! I couldn't believe it, but I truly did make money on the deal over the years.

Thus, I'm not a warranty kind of gal, but with portable DVD players I will always spring for it (as long as the coverage is reasonable). Good luck deciding, OP!

Neither brand has a great reputation, though I would trust the Phillips over RCA. RCA is no longer the quality brand that it once was.

I bought DD the PHillips one last year on black friday and Target and I am happy to report that it is still operational. :thumbsup2
The best one I have ever gotten is the Sony one from Target. It was later in Dec '10. It had a 9" screen, a 6 hour battery, a remote, and extra accessories and was $88 I believe. I don't use it often ut it has an awesome picture!! And I don't regret spending the $$ one bit!!
