What are everyone's thoughts on the MAGICBAND+ on cruise ships, specifically on the Dream now that they have been active for a couple years. Do you prefer them over the KTTWC?
Do you still need the KTTWC for anything if you have the band? Charging? Getting on and off the ship?

I love using my magicband at WDW, but I found them not super convenient on my recent cruise on the Fantasy.

For charging at restaurants you have to take the band off and I believe you still needed your KTTW when getting on/off the ship.

They were pretty convenient when using the DCL photographers.

After the first few days of our cruise both my child and I stopped wearing our bands and just used KTTW with lanyards.

Yes, you would still need a physical card (KTTW) to reboard the ship in ports, since port security won’t be able to read Magic bands.

Which is weird, bc I recently returned from a Princess cruise- they have similar round medallions, that I wore in a sports band on my wrist( other options available) They just scanned those for everything right on my wrist - getting a drink from a bar, opening my door, and boarding the ship. I don't know how the technology differs, but it would seem doable for DCl.

If you already have a Magicband + from the parks I would bring it on cruise. It’s a nice backup if you leave your cabin and forget your lanyard. As previous posters have already said you need your card to get on and off the ship. When I go to WDW, I put my Magicband on the day I drive down and take it off when I get back home.

I have stayed at Universal and forgot my lanyard in my room, almost walked out of room without it

You don’t get any discounts buying through DCL website unlike when you buy through WDW hotel stay. Also can find a sale at Shop Disney.

If you wear a watch, you now have both wrists bound.

I got one for a cruise. Wished I had saved the $25 (plain MB, when offered at reduced prices for cruises last year).

It was just easier to use the KTTW card. But I have plenty experience with them. And found out that the door reader can read them through even when in a bag.

And you take off a MB for bar orders.

And there is stolill the option to wear a lanyard for easy access.

It’s not like at the parks where you might need to use your KTTW card. Or has that shifted to the phone app for LL and the current name of Genie?

@CeCe0906 - Princess Medallions are definitely next-level technology compared to Disney! Order a drink and have it magically find where you are sitting.

I take a lot of characterphotos and use a rollator so scannong a band vs a card was easier. I had the band from Disneyland and therefore it was great. As others said getting on and off was by card. I would never buy a band for the ship but if you have one, bring it…
I loved the light up features during Mickeys color spin and pirate night but the first time it freaked me out cause I didnt expect it

We had them from a WDW trip, my daughter wore hers to the kids club and it came in handy when my mom picked her up from the kids club so that she could get back into the room. I tended to just use my key card.

This is not necessarily the case... We recently cruised on the Barcelona to Southampton cruise and I was able to use my MagicBand at every port to both dis-embark and embark the ship. The security agents at every port, Lison Portugal, LaCoruna and Vigo Span had the Disney tablets in hand that allowed the band ( KTTW cards) to be scanned. Did I take my KTTW with me in my wallet while in ports, absolutely, but just for back up in case something happened. But most of the time while I was onboard, I ended up leaving my KTTW card in the slot by the stateroom door that kept the lights on....

Thanks for the update. I know when Magic Bands started being used on the cruise they wouldn't work in ports, and didn't realize that had changed.

oh wow, thanks for the update, I will have my Disneyland California Magicband+ and I was just expecting to use it for the door. Of course I'll have the KTTW card with me too, just in case :)

If you haven't already, you need to log on to your MDE account (mobile app or website) and link your MB+ there. Once linked to MDE it will automatically be available for your DCL cruise.

DLR and WDW/DCL use separate databases for the MB+.

Thanks, yes I know. I unlinked it from the Disneyland App when I came home after my June visit and paired it to the Disney Cruise / MDE . I plan to buy the cruise one on the ship and link that to Disneyland App for my 2025 trip. As I am in Europe I have to wait to be on the ship to buy the cruise one, as they dont ship to international passengers before the cruise.

No need to unlink from the Disneyland app. The same MB+ can be linked to the Disneyland app and MDE/DCL without issue.

We saw people using their KTTW cards to get on and off the Fantasy on our recent 10 Night Southern Caribbean cruise.
