After a long battle with prostrate cancer, my father passed away this summer. At one point his count was only .25 but he still died.

NOW, DH41 just had his PSA checked and the reading is .34.

Should I be concerned? Any advice, web sites, etc would be greatly appreciated. I am trying not to worry but obviously after what just happened with my father, I am scared.

At this point DH is going to be re-tested tomorrow (PSA) and see the dr (GP) on Tuesday for the results. I am hoping to get him a referral on Tuesday to see a urologist.

Thank you

The problem with cancer is that it is very individual. Really the only advice you should consider is that of your practitioner. However I'm sure there are many survivor's that could share stories to help keep you positive. As always, I am sure every DISer offers you our support. :grouphug:

I'm a cancer survivor (stage 4) and feel that being informed is the most important part! Before the meeting with the GP you should write down any questions you have. Take notes during the meeting. Ask for copies of all test reports and read them yourself (start a file). Find out who the best doctors are in your area (usually, teaching hospitals have the best doctors). If, after doing research, you have any doubts about the way a particular doctor wants to treat (or not treat) your dh, get a second opinion. Sometimes a third opinion. More than anything remember that you (or your dh with your help) are your own best advocate---no one cares as much about your life as you do! And no doctor knows it all.

Interesting sidenote from USA Today article today (or was it yesterday?): how most doctors don't want to aggressively treat geriatric patients. But one doctor who was profiled doesn't agree with this, and has started treating them (rather than writing them off) and helping them get cured. I don't know anything about prostrate cancer or psa numbers but I do know that if I were concerned about test results I would be pro-active. Sometimes it makes a life or death difference.
