DD is a HS Senior. Her choir has been accepted to be part of WDW's Candlelight Processional. Cool, right?

One slight problem... she has died her hair... an "unnatural color". She's done it before every school year. Before this year, she knew the Processional was a possibility, but not guaranteed.

Now that they're accepted, apparently one of the "rules" is no unnatural hair. So we're trying to figure out our options.
She asked the teacher if she could wear a wig... "no".
Not going to the Processional, while an option, she doesn't want to do.
So it looks like she's going to need to dye her hair to a "natural" color (no, she doesn't have enough time for her hair to grow out).

Is there another option?

How dark is her current color? - You could ask the folks at her salon if a temporary color would cover it up long enough. (I would be hesitant in case it wears off during the trip, but it might be worth asking.)

Very cool, indeed!

Why would they say no to a wig? I guess it really doesn't matter since they likely won't budge, but it seems odd since you can get really realistic wigs (although they are $$$ expensive.)

Anyway, if I were her mom I would say you knew this was a possibility you could be asked and to just dye it back to her original color. It is not like she can't dye it back again to the color she likes down the road (although I would wait a while for the health of her hair.)

Maybe someone else will have a better solution. But I don't think dyeing it back is horrific, since it is a clearly stated rule of participation.

I know nothing about hair coloring, Sam, but seems like either the above suggestions would work.

And congratulations for your daughter. That's great!

We were surprised they said no also. BUT, a) We're assuming the "no unnatural hair" is a Disney rule (DD has been in choir 3/4 years of HS and has had dyed hair every year and the teach hasn't said anything and b) DD asked the teacher during a practice last night, and the immediate answer was "no, not allowed". I would have felt better if she at least said "let me find out" and then came back with a 'no'. I'm a little suspicious about the immediate 'no'.

And as far as I know, this is the first time our school has been chosen. Even if we've gone in the past, wouldn't it be worth asking Disney if the rules have changed?

And yes, the solution will probably end up going back to the salon to see what they can do. It just sucks that DD only gets her hair color for three months (she saves up her paycheck and gift money to pay for the hair dye, DW & I don't contribute) instead of the full year (OR paying for three dyes instead of just one). I was hoping the smart people on the Dis would would have a good solution.

Not surprised the teacher said no on the wig. Not saying your daughter would, but the possibility of it coming off for any reason during the processional is not something I would want to have to worry about if I was the teacher in charge.

I know this is not really thinking outside the box, but dying it a more natural color or not participating are the only options I can think of.

Yes, it sucks she wasted her money, but she knew it was a possibility and took a calculated risk. A great life lesson.

I'd try one of the (cheap) temporary/wash-out hair dyes from Walmart/etc. in a natural color (darker than the current color, if possible) and see how it looks. It'll wash out over time, and shouldn't be terribly damaging.

A big congratulations to your DD and her choir - very very awesome! 🎉🎉

I have no suggestions, because my DD would be making the choice to go with natural hair color or stay home. I know this may seem harsh to some.

ETA….I just read how your DD pays for this herself. With knowing this, I would pay for her to get her hair dyed to the normal color. This is too big of an opportunity for hair color to get in the way.

Having not seen her hair, would any of those clip in hair extension things be an option That would cover the color temporarily?

I don’t believe the “no wigs” rule for a second, I think that’s just something the teacher said off-the-cuff for whatever reason. Wigs and hair pieces are extremely common among certain cultures as part of their everyday look. Disney would have allegations of racism thrown at them if they had a blanket rule against wigs, especially when you’re talking about high school guest performers and not even official cast members. What about the hypothetical girl undergoing chemo, is she allowed to wear a wig? Contact Disney directly to ask about that rule, I think you’ll find wearing a wig will be allowed.

If the wig is done well and her colored hair is under a wig cap, Disney would have no reason not to admit her. That would be a pretty arbitrary rule from the teacher. But a decent wig may also cost more than dying her hair twice, so maybe that's not any better of an option. I would at least look, and if you get a deal on a wig, then go with that.

If option 1 doesn't work out, I would probably talk to the stylist about what her choices are. She could also try a pixie cut for the first time, depending on what her hair is like. Maybe covering one or both of the appointments would make for a nice early Christmas gift.

What color is it? She might be able to cover it with something like this. It just washes out next shampoo.

Answering some questions/issues that have been brought up...
While we knew the Candlelight Processional was a possibility, we did not know of the "no unnatural hair" until about a week ago.
It's not a "big deal" in that it's worth sacrificing the trip for, but I'd like to come up with a solution that makes everyone happy.
It's not just the money aspect of dying the hair again (although it plays a part), but I do worry a little about damaging her hair.
I thought about contacting Disney myself (or having DD do so), but don't know how the teacher would take that.

No suggestions just want to congratulate your daughter and thank her for being part of Candlelight!

Also chiming in to say that I can't believe she can't wear a wig. I wore a wig through my chemo and I can't tell you the huge amount of people that had no idea I was wearing a wig. Wigs are amazing today and its hard to tell if its a wig or real.

However, wigs are super expensive, and I doubt anyone would want to shell out the money for one to wear for one performance.

I should also mention, when the subject of wigs came up, we have no idea of how much they cost. We were thinking it's close to Halloween, so wigs should be easy to find. :D
