I'm starting to plan for an upcoming anniversary. I'm looking for a beautiful place with tons of ammenities, that would be considered a romantic resort. Now we saw a show last night on the Discovery Channel that had rooms starting at $1200.... I'm not looking to go that high. :) But maybe half that would be ok, though a little less would be great too.

I say in the USA because we don't want to waste more than say 5 - 7 hours in a plane each way. We live on the East Coast. We could be open to outside the USA, if it fits the description. Something not overly crowded.

EDIT: time of year is June... and I know my wife would prefer some type of water near. But what I really want to know is specific resorts, not general destinations. Thanks! :)

My top vote might be Savannah, GA. It's beautiful, loaded with small, historic B&Bs, and also haunted. It's got a nice riverfront area and overall very charming. I would love to go back there with my DH.

I love Coronado Island and especially Hotel de Coronado off San Diego. Have you been up to wine country in northern CA? They have some beautiful area and darlin B&Bs and you can make arrangements for a hot air ballon ride or whatever little things that are romantic. I guess it depends on what your idea of romance is also.

That looks very nice. Only thing, and my fault for not mentioning, is that my wife would really prefer something near or on, a body of water. But that is pretty close. We could even do a 3 day weekend just "because".

I think it depends what time of year you are going. In the summertime, the Burlington, VT area or North Conway, NH area can be very romantic...very picturesque, lots of little inns, easy mountains to climb, etc. But I wouldn't go there in the winter unless you're into skiing.

There is wine country in CA, of course, and you can do that and San Francisco.

I know you said in the US, but from the East Coast, Bermuda is a very short flight...2 hours from BOS, I think...and it is beautiful there. That is where my parents spent their 15th anniversary, and they returned completely glowing.

Happy planning!

The Grove Park Inn and the Inn at Biltmore Estate are both top notch. The Grove Park has some world class dining and a brand new spa and the Inn at Biltmore Estate has....well the Biltmore estate.

Asheville itself is very artsy and there are some wonderful shops, galleries and restaurants in town. There is the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway to explore and so much more.

Longboat Key, FL (just off the coast of Sarasota, FL, there's 2 five star resorts on this island, Longboat Key Club, and another is a private spa, which I cannot recall the name of.)
New York, New York (Waldorf-Astoria)
Aspen, CO
Tahoe, NV or CA
Key West, FL
St. Augustine, FL
Nantucket, MA (bed and breakfast places)
Cape May, NJ (same as above)

... and many many more places. I would suggest Tahoe if you're going to be traveling this winter though. Get a nice cottage for a week and your wife will be like putty in your hands.

The Cliff House in Ogunquit Maine is awesome! My dh and I go there almost every year for our anniversary. It is right on the ocean (on a big cliff) and there is a beach nearby. There is a great restaurant, spa (the spa is fabulous), and it is near tons of recreation.

I would suggest Le Chateau Frontenac ....nothing more romantic than Old Quebec City....like being in Europe.....DH and I had a beautiful upper floor view of the St Lawrence River one very romantic long weekend about 10 years ago  .........

This is nice too....right on the ocean and Portsmouth is a great little New England seaport city....DH and I spent our 10th anniversary weekend there 2 years ago....it's only an hour from us...Wentworth by the Sea

In either place, June weather should be fine....

Bermuda is lovely too....I've only ever stayed at their larger ones like Grotto Bay and Sonesta, and I think some of the smaller more exclusive Bermuda resorts would be more romantic....we have friends who highly recommend this one: Pompano Beach Club, Bermuda

Have fun planning and enjoy your getaway!

Wild Dunes, Isle of Palms, SC

Kiawah Island, Kiawah, SC

Nice! Let them know it's for a special occasion!

Well it's not in the US, but my vote is for Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands. It is a quick flight, you can go direct to San Juan and then it is another 45 min. flight from there. Peter Island is the only place on the island so the only people there are resort guests. It is a little pricey, we paid about $600 a night but it was for our Honeymoon and all of our food, alcohol, kayaking, snorkeling gear, etc is covered as well. They have massages on the beach and day trip excursions.

It is right on the water and the water is crystal clear and beautiful, the beaches are all private and the food is to die for.

Have fun making a decision on where to go!

My top two picks would be the Del Coronado in San Diego and the Banff Springs hotel in Banff, Alberta, Canada-which I KNOW isn't in the US but it is closer to you then San Diego and is really my first choice. The SPA at the Banff Springs is out of this world!!! It was listed as one of the top 5 spas in the world and they have upgraded since then. Very romantic.

The Del Coronado is my second favorite all time hotel. Watch the movie "Some Like it Hot", it was filmed there. It is the first hotel west of the Mississippi to have electricity so it is full of charm. The Lobby is incredible. It is right on the ocean and there is so much to do in San Diego.

It is a little more than you want to spend per night but maybe you could cut the length of visit. No children would make for a romantic and quiet stay.
Little Palm Island

My vote is for Cape May New Jersey. It is simply beautiful! Very romantic, and reasonably priced. There are so many things to do and see, there is the beaches, the shops, the beautiful Victorian homes, it is just breathtaking. Good luck with your search, what a nice husband you are to do that for your wife!
