Im looking to buy a new camera before our next trip. From what I have heard on the radio they suggest the canon T2I or 5d mark (5d out of my budget though). I want something that will take great pictures without delay on focusing so maybe a manual focus on a SLR. I also would like HD video 1080.

I heard that these new cameras will do excellent video so you dont need to take a video camera also which will be nice.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I have the T2i and love it, but pictures are only as good as the person behind the camera and their ability to use the camera. I would not purchase a camera based on radio ads. As far as the video on the T2i, it is great, but unless you have a tripod, the camera gets heavy to hold for periods of time based on the lens you have on at the time.

You might want to post this on the photography board. There are some great people on that board with a lot of knowledge and informed advice.

For an everyday, easy-to-use camera, I LOVE my Panasonic Lumix! It is compact, yet takes great action shots, etc. My family loves the pictures so much, 4 of them have gone out and bought the same camera within the last year...

I use my I-phone and it takes great pictures. I now have a camera with me at all times, so I no longer need any of my old cameras. The video capabilities aren't that great, but still, I can video anytime, since I always have the phone with me. You might want to consider a phone with camera since they are now a multi-purpose device., and IMHO a better value.

I have heard great things about the panasonic Lumix - which model do you have? How is it in low light?

TIA

I just posted this same question last week and the Panasonic Lumix was the camera mentioned over and over and over from other Dis Boarders. There are so many different models....but from the replies I received it looks like many of the models are recommended. I asked about the lighting as well and was told that really no point and shoot camera is going to be great in low lighting....but a faster SD card would help with the processing time so I ordered 2 of the class 10 cards....hope that improves speed between shots.

I would not go based solely on what you heard on a radio ad. There are a lot of good cameras out there, but you need to base it on your needs. Do you want an SLR to carry around to the parks each day? What do you normally take pictures of at home, on vacation, etc?

As a PP stated, there are a lot of camera suggestion threads on the Photography forum that you could read through and see if any of the suggestions help.

Regarldess of whether or not you decide an SLR camera is the best option for you, there are many brands out there for both SLR & P&S cameras. As far as the SLRs, most are similar across the same price levels. Before you decide which is best for you, I suggest going to a store and holding them in your hands to see what feels rights. Controls are different on each one and you want something that feels comfortable in your hands, and that you can find the controls/dials easily while taking pictures.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip on the faster SD card. That may be my answer for the time being.

I hve been interested in replacing my P&S for a awhile now and the Nikon S9100 has an interesting technology for to low light but there are too many complaints about the lens sticking for my comfort. Now I am back to the panasonic again or waiting a bit longer.

LOL, I'm doing the same thing for now. I really want a new digital camera but I have a good one. It messes up one picture out of a 100....blurry or low light situations usually. Still, it's served me well for 6 years and the main complaint I have with it is that it took too long between photos. That lag cost me a lot of great shots....especially on a fast moving safari or trying to catch a shot of the kids coming down the Mt Everest ride. I hope that the new SD cards will help with that....after looking at the ones I currently had they don't even have a class listed on them and they are 256mb. I can't imagine that bumping up to a higher class, 4gb won't help something LOL

Unless your used to carrying around a SLR and aren't afraid of getting it damaged while riding the various rides I wouldn't recommend it. If you are I've recently upgraded to the Canon iT3 at work and love it. I would say the video is not nearly as good as a separate video camera. Focus is manual, and the sound quality is poor at best.

I took my Rebel G to the world once and although I got some great pictures, I switched to a point and shoot for the rest of my trips. It was too big for me and I was always worried I'd break it.

I recently purchased a FS300 video camera on-line for under $150 brand new. It's not HD but I've never had HD and for the size and price I'm excited. I currently have a SD890IS which I love and it takes very good pictures, but am planning on upgrading to a SX210 before my upcoming trip.

I'm also looking at buying a monopod for this trip, one that doubles as a walking stick. They aren't as heavy or large as a standard tripod and will give me something to lean on while waiting in lines.

Hope I helped.

I didnt know there was a photography section.
I dont use a SLR right now. My main complaint is that between pictures or waiting for my point and shoot to focus and then sometimes they are blurry. Some relatives of mine have a nikon d3100 I think and they can snap photo after photo in nothing flat. I wouldnt mind lugging a slr around as long as it fits all my wants.
