Hi, we are going to be in San Diego for 1 day. Was thinking of going to Old Town to find some Mexican food. Any recommendations? I like places with fresh food and somewhat authentic not the big chains. something fun!

I think Old Town Mexican Cafe has the best Mexican food in Old Town. It's not a chain, they make fresh tortillas, and their carnitas are yummy. It can get crowded, though, so there could be a wait. It's on San Diego Avenue, a couple of blocks from the southern end of Old Town Historic Park. Guadalajara Grill is not bad, but more it's more run-of-the-mill Mexican food.

I second Old Town Mexican Cafe! I'm a local, and love to go there. :) The carnitas and fresh-made tortillas are to die for. Also, if the wait gets crazy long, I have heard that the Coyote Grill next door is also delicious, though I have not been there myself. Guadalajara's is also good, a little more upscale.

Fred's Mexican Cafe for margaritas, and complimentary chips and salsa, then over to Rocking Baja for Baja Buckets. Combination seafood buckets, crab, shrimp, crab legs, in various combos with excellent sides. Most of the happy hours are 3 to 6 and appetizers are half price.
