I have no display, and the repair guy thinks it will probably cost more to fix than it's worth. I'm not interested in spending a lot, ideally under $150 and while I'd like a larger screen, 32" is okay. Smart TV would be nice, but I've lived without so far. Opinions on these, and other recommendations, welcome.

Thanks!

We have had to buy a couple TVs this past year for a few reasons. Parents had to relocate to be closer so they needed one for new house, my son moved out and needed one and we bought my daughter one for Christmas for her room.

After all the research, etc. I think the best picture is with Samsung. You can drive yourself crazy comparing all of them. I would recommend Samsung if we needed to but any others in the future.

Good luck!

We really love the insignia brand at Best Buy. I’d give those a look too. I know they have some smart tv versions as well.

I prefer to keep the streaming device, but they make TVs both ways !

I would buy at Costco. They don't push you on some expense service plan. They give it to you for free.

We are fans of TCL. It's an off brand but we've bought pricey brands and been less impressed (looking at you, LG :(). TCL has worked great for us and the price is nice!

just got an LG 43" 4k uhd smart tv w/surround sound at walmart for $299.00 plus tax. LG's have proven for us to be of good quality, and while i'm a HUGE fan of buying from costco (for their concierge coverage-the ONLY place i will buy a computer from)-they tend to carry higher cost models and i can save at least a couple of hundred on a tv which cancels out the value of the concierge coverage if i use a credit card (like amex) that doubles the manufacturer's warranty (w/lg it's 1-2 years depending on the tv, so w/the right credit card it will end up being at minimum a 2 year warranty).

I would definitively get a Smart TV. We just transitioned from $$ cable to a much less expensive option so we utilize Roku and having the Smart features is added options for viewing!!

Just keep in mind that a TV you buy these days is truly disposable. Not only are they almost impossible to fix, they have a very short physical life expectancy, and technology updates make them outdated after just a few years. We retired our perfectly functioning 25" RCA tube console TV 2 years ago. It was 20+ years old, but not HD. Of course that triggered a call to Dish Network to get all our receivers/DVRs upgraded to HD as well. In home use I would expect 5 years life. At work at use levels far above what home users are at, we've getting about 2 years. And we have complete failures within the warranty period, but the manufacturers don't fix those, they just replace them. Their cost to send someone out would be more than just giving you a new TV, and then there is the question of if they even had the replacement parts.

I agree with TVGuy. Don't ever bother to try to a TV fixed now days. Unless you have a free warranty like Costco offers it is going to cost more than the TV is worth to get it fixed. I don't even know how you could even ship one of those large TVs now days.

Yeah, I talked to the repair guy who does house calls. He agrees with the not worth repairing pov. Funny, the authorized repair place still hasn't called me back.

Anyway, thank you, everyone. I have decided on a TCL 32" Smart tv - similar to the one linked above, but that one is pickup only.

Same tv, just a different model year, the one I linked was the 2018 version, the one you linked is the 2017.

We are fans of Samsung, have 3 and have had good luck with them. However, we decided to try TCL based on good reviews and have purchased two - a 65” as a gift and a 55” for a guest bedroom. They are Smart TVs, making it possible to cut cable costs if necessary. Both were purchased on Amazon, are 2018 models and are working well. The pricing is very competitive, the 55” (there are two models of each size) is now $579.00, but we purchased for about $430.00 using a special offer for Amex cardholders. In comparison our 55” Samsung model was just over $1;000. TCL models are widely available; our neighbors purchased theirs at Best Buy.

Well, I just came back to add a request to please talk me out of the 40" model - but seeing beccasmom's response about the even larger sets. ..

Lol! We have just gone bigger with each purchase. We still one 32" in our bedroom but it looks teeny to me so I want to get rid of the armoire that houses it and get a tv stand so we can buy a bigger tv. I almost bought a 43" TCL that was on sale at Target on BF but I held off. In truth, we watch so little tv in our room that we really don't need anything bigger. I'll let the tv in there die first and then maybe...Our most recent TCL is a 55" in our family room. Love it!!!

I know 55” inches for a TV sounds huge, but we’ve gotten used to it and it seems “normal” now (not at first though :upsidedow). But TCL sells the smaller sizes too - the 2018 43” is the “smallest” and is listed at $299.00 on Amazon. 4K technology is best seen on a larger monitor, so that’s why you’ll see a lot of sets offered in larger sizes. The advice often given is buy the biggest you can afford. But you have to put it somewhere and not every space can handle the larger sets. And if you’re not looking at 4K technology, then it doesn’t matter as much. My DH is now eyeing the newest TCL set at 75” :rolleyes1for our family room.

A 2017 TCL 720p model with a 32” inch screen is $139.00 on Amazon. A 2017 4K TCL model with a 43” inch screen is $239.00. 43” is the smallest size usually offered in 4K; under that size you would not notice nor appreciate the technology. And remember the screens are measured diagonally from corner to corner.

We did a ton of research before we bought our sets. Good luck!
