We need to shape up and an elliptical is what we are looking for. We went to Total Fitness and will not pay those prices but found Ironman and Horizon online and at a sporting good store- anyone have experiences with any makes?
TIA,Linda

I was in the market for an elliptical last year and did a lot of research on it. What I read was that, in order to get a good elliptical, you really should spend in the $2500 range otherwise you're setting yourself up for trouble. I tried the ones out at Fitness Resource and just couldn't bring myself to pay it either, but I'm not going to buy a cheaper one because I couldn't get a good review on them.

So, this year I opted to get a treadmill. For the price of a cheaper-but-great elliptical, I can get a FANTASTIC treadmill--plus I think I will like the versatility. I think the elliptical is a great machine and good for your knees but I just couldn't settle for one from the sporting goods store. I'm tired of crappy equipment.

Christine,
Thanks for the reply. We have a treadmill and even though I will eventually get to running on it again I would like the change of the elliptical.
Thanks

I have a ProForm I got from Sears last year. Very please with it. Paid about $300 for it.

I have a Reebok elliptical and I absolutely hate it. It's got a totally different stride than the ones at the gym (ProForm, I think). It's very tough on the knees and has a stride more like a stepper. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

I can use it for about 5 minutes TOPS before my thighs are screaming -- and I was able to do the ellipticals in the gym for 45-60 minutes no problem.

This was my experience with the cheaper ellipticals. Rather than having a long, gliding motion, I felt like I was on a step machine. Definitely not what you want. I think most gyms use Precor. I forget the brand that I was looking at--just cannot remember the name--I just remember that the cheapest one was $2200 and even I did not like the stride on that one. Preferred the $2500 one but just couldn't do it.

DH and I tested several eliptical machines, from $400-$2000. We ended up getting the $400, not because it was the cheapest, but we truly liked it better. It's a Fitness Quest HR 1100A. We chose it for it's size (small), price (obviously), warranty (90 day plus we bought the inexpensive 3 year), and feel. It is very smooth, quiet, and has 12 different programs as well as pulse taker, etc. We got it from November 2005, and DH has been using it every other day for a half hour at the time. He doesn't see any difference when he looks in the mirror, but his clothes are hanging more loosely and I can tell. He also has more energy now. I'm pregnant and so I won't be trying anything new until after the baby comes, but I plan to use it to get rid of that baby weight!

We did have someone at a "professional" fitness store that told us that we would never find any kind of quality eliptical for under $800, that it would be a waste of money, etc. In the end, we figured that we would spend the $400 on one now, it has a three year warranty, and if we stick with it and want to upgrade to a "fancier" one later, we can and we aren't out anything...we've gotten our money's worth. And if we hated it and didn't use it, we only were out $400 and not $2000. Does that make sense?

I don't have much experience with ellipticals but I just got a Proform c700 at Sports Authority for only $200!! I love it so far and you can't beat the price

I have a Bally's Fitness home model one and bought it a year ago for $1200. I bought it from ballystore.com which is from the Bally's website. Now they sell a range of elliptical models for different prices.

I also have a used Trotter treadmill I bought off of ebay a few years ago for $1500.

My family and I use the elliptical much more than the treadmill. Try them out at a sport store first and/or find a used one on ebay.

We bought our Horizon one 2 yrs ago at Dicks for about $750. I love it - I like it better than the ones they have at our gym.

We have a ProForm, I think I paid around $300 for it and it works great. I ordered it directly from ProForm, they had free shipping. It was the same model that Sears had and they were asking $100 more than ProForm.
