my hubby and I are running the 2012 marathon relay and there seems to be a bit if a lack of clear info on how Disney is handling the relay....

mainly--since DH is running the second half--he wants to know what time he needs to be and where!! I note this info is NOT in the Marathon Weekend booklet. Since it will take me at least 2 hours and 20 minutes to get to the halfway point--he is hoping he doesnt have to get on the bus with me at 3:30am to go to the start and then hop a shuttle to the relay point and spend a god-awful amount of time freezing his rear end off waiting when in reality he wont have to start until close to 8am...

am I missing something somewhere that explains all this? I did see that once I finish I will be shuttled to the marathon finish where DH and I will be "reunited" which is nice.

also is there a post outthere that lists all the relay team names? I always find it fun to see what others came up with.

ours is "Someday My Prince Will Run" :) [and for you sticklers yes I had to abbreviate it but dont remember how I did it off the top of my head]

There was something earlier in the year. The race booklet does punt to the Final Instructions. The best information I recall is that yes, he will be commuting to the Epcot Parking lot with you. He will be boarding a bus prior to the start of the marathon headed for the MK parking lot. The logistics are simple ince the course is understood. Epcot parking will be inaccessible for busses to leave the paring lot once the race starts since the exit roads from the parking lot are also the race course. They have to get the runners out of the parking lot pre-race since the first relay exchange could occur prior to the last runner clearing the epcot parking lot exits.

What is not clear and something I would consider if you rent a car is driving the MK parking lot. The risks are that he will not be allowed into the parking lot, will get tied up I traffic or will otherwise be delayed.

Yes, you will shuttle back to Epcot. You will be reunited after the finish in the runner’s only area, unless I misunderstood something.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I have this crazy Snow White song dancing in my head now ☺

The info is on the rundisney site...
The second runner has to be at Epcot as early as first runner to catch bus to MK parking and there is also info on bag check.
Go to rundisney..click on event overview then relay link

Maybe some info came when I registered DS and DD...seems I read that both had to be at Epcot so second runner could be bused to MK parking....and there was more info on bag check...I'll have to go check my emails

Bag check is simple. Runner 2 carries runner 1's post run stuff to the MK parking lot. Runner 1 checks Runner 2's post race stuff in the baggage check tent. I am sure there are more detailed instructions to follow in the final instructions.

Seems like it would be easier just to catch the monorail at Epcot and head over to the MK parking lot. Hubby and I are staying at Polynesian with the hope he can just walk over to the exchange area (or take the monorail to MK and walk from there).

That does sound like a good idea. We are at POFQ so I have really only scope out that situation.

As chief travel organizer, I am the one who takes care of all details..I have to get my adults kids to their locations and run my first marathon. :scared1:

Walking from the Poly is a great plan....

Turn the map to Openstreet Option under map options and you will see where a couple pedestrian bridges are located that will put him in the MK parking lot.

Ahhhh - perfect!

Thanks for the map, Coach Charles!

Okay, correct me if I am wrong.....you can take the monorail (provided you are staying at GF, Poly or Contemporary) to MK parking lot/TTC. From there you can walk to the exchange area. If you do this, do you still have to go at the early hour and wait hours (possibly 4 1/2) for your exchange? Since the first runner must be at the starting area around 4:45 am, that would mean a ridiculous amount of wait time for runner two. I am now questioning why I signed up for this race instead of the Donald 1/2. May try to change if race exchange is going to cause too much trouble.

Let me say officially - Runner 2 is to marshal in the staging area for the race at Epcot Parking no later than 4:30. From there, there will be instructions and directions to the runner 2 busing for the ride to MK. More detail to follow when the final instructions come out next month

Unofficially, if you are staying at a monorail resort, it makes little sense for Runner 2 to do that. Its a simple walk from the TTC, the Poly, GF or SOG to the relay staging area. I would make sure that Runner 2 does carry Runner 1's post run gear for their use after their segment. It actually seems to help Disney since it puts less stress on the bus system. Say all this, I would not wait too long to head over to the MK parking lot exchange point. Every year Disney Security has a new area they attempt to enforce and I would hate to think crossing Seven Seas Dr is their new area of focus. Last year is was preventing folks from crossing under seven seas on the tram way (marathon course) and allowing them to stand along the course in the parking lot.

I will also say that if in the final instructions Disney say do not do this....I would not. If they are silent, I would feel OK with walking over.

A couple of other options for Runner #2 is to consider going to Goodwill, etc. and picking up a cheap blanket/throw and an inepensive blowup pillow. That way they can bundle up and might even be able to taka bit of a cat nap while waiting for runner #1.

While the group of #2 runners that the counterparts to our #1 (about 3 or 4 relay groups are planning on doing the race together, along with a few Goffy runners who will be doing the full) are planning on taking blankets and pillows, I highly suspect that they'll just have a big 'ol party while they are waiting for us to come by. Of course the #1 runners are planning on waiting for them to finish sitting at the cantina in Mexco/Epcot sipping some Cornonas and Margareritas (for medicinal purposes only :rotfl2:)

Hmmm. Makes me sorta regret wanting to be #2....:goodvibes:goodvibes Ole.

Sounds like a good plan! :drinking1 :teeth:

I sent runDisney a note about my husband skipping Epcot and just walking from the Polynesian to the relay exchange and this is the reply I got:

"If he starts his day at Epcot, he'll need to take the shuttle over to the Magic Kingdom for the relay.

The Polynesian is within walking of the relay exchange area."

LOL. I know the Poly is within walking distance; I just wanted to make sure he will be allowed to do so. I'll double check at the expo.

Think of it this way.... The instructions that the voluntEAR is given will look just like your email. (not slamming anyone here - its just hard to get all answers to the staff on new events) Based on that email, he should sleep in and walk over. If I were him, I would plan on coming over to the exchange 30-45 minutes early....

Any idea how Runner #2 will know when Runner #1 arrives at the exchange area? I can't imagine all these people waiting to find their partner in the same spot, even if they are trickling in at different times!

It may be described a little better in the race packet? I would ask any of the Wine and Dine relay folks for some insight. I assume it will have to do something with estimated times and when you should be looking for your partner.:confused3

I imagine they will use the chip tracking techology to monitor the relay runners and notify runner #2 when runner #1 is approaching the exchange area. I suspect the finish for runner #1 will be close to but not the same exact location as the start for #2 to avoid mass confusion/mingling of runners. so you will be nearby but not there to do an actual "handoff'. which is why runner #2 needs to check the clothing items for #1 at the bag check and not simply hold onto them to do the handoff....

All the above...

Though, I am not sure the final race day instructions will have a lot of info. The W&D really does not.

Expect Runner 2 to be corralled by bib number and there will more than likely be a chip mat a couple hundred yards in prior to exiting into the Pluto Parking Lot.

As I recall, there is a runner later system letting you as runner # 2 know that your runner is getting close.

I think the rule of thumb will be to keep flexible as you wait for your runner but even more importantly, know about when your runner should be finished.

What if I (#2) get up with #1 and go to EPCOT, check my bag and then go back to CR. I'll keep warm and hydrated and then go from Poly to the exchange area. I know how much time I have based on #1 running time.
Or is it better to just stay with the #2 group? I am assuming that there will be a comfortable waiting area. I just can't see Disney letting us sit around in miserable, cold conditions. I picture heaters and entertainment. Am I wrong?

Actually, you are responsible for Runner 1's bag post run bag and Runner 1 your post run needs bag. Anything you or Runner 1 sheds pre-race would also go in that bag.

I would think that if you want to wait at CR, then that is what I would do then make you way over. Your would walk from TTC to the Poly then cross into the Pluto lot on a crosswalk and into the parking lot through a pedestrian gate.

I agree that Disney should have a nice tent for Runners to stay warm in, but it may well be busses.
