Looking at TABLETS...need advice and opinions

My DD has a refurb 16GB Acer Iconia A500 and LOVES it. She got it two weeks ago from Beach Camera through an eBay deal of the day special for $259. Right out of the box the device prompted her to download the latest software upgrade.

Thanks!

We bought our DS8 a "craig" brand tablet from Rite Aid for $88 as his big Christmas gift. It runs Android, takes an SD micro card and so far my DH says it works quite well (he's been playing with it for three days now).

IPad was defnitely out of our budget for DS8 ;) But this seems like a good plan for him, at least for now. If he does well with it, we'll probably buy him a 'better' one next year.

I'm going to be getting a Nook Tablet for Christmas for myself. We did consider the Kindle Fire, but the big drawback to that (in the eyes of my techie DH) was that the Kindle Fire doesn't take a memory card, so you can't put you own stuff on it that doesn't come from the Amazon store (DH had the same issue with the Ipad).

Is craig the brand name? Are they available at all rite aids? This would be up my DD's alley as well.

I bought two blackberry playbook tablets for $199 from Best Buy this morning....price dropped from $499. They are very similiar to the Kindle Fire, but also have a camera and 16GB. Looking like they are out of stock at alot of places now...

Personally, I ended up going with a laptop for DD10. I just feel like you get so much more for your money with those. Plus we really want her to learn how to type properly and thus wanted a "real" keyboard. I just bought one at Best Buy today for $279 - a real one with a 15 inch screen and optical drive. I also considered netbooks which I still like better than the tablets.

She has an Ipod Touch already which is basically a small IPad (ok, not quite as great but good enough!)

Yes, that is the brand name. I guess they must be at all Rite Aids, I saw it at two different locations. It was on an end cap with other electronic devices, and the sign said "While Supplies Last" I also saw it in the CVS circular for Black Friday.

I ended up buying my DD a Nook Color refurb for $119. I plan to root it to release more apps. Here's hoping it works out.

That said we went with apple Ipad 2 for DS....(paid $454 black friday at best buy)
and a Color NOOK for hubby (shhhh!) he is an avid reader (Refurbished - I got on ebay for $119! yea!)

I thought I would check out these two tablets...and see which one I want more before getting one for ME!

Can you run Microsoft Word on any of the tablets currently out there?

You can read Word documents on either an iPad or tablet using an Android operating system. You can also edit Word documents with a purchased app. I have done a rough draft of a school paper on my iPad and then finalized it on my computer in Word. -- Suzanne

Great list, thanks!!

The Asus Eee seems to be at the top of every list. My sister has an Asus laptop and loves it.

DH stood in line at Best Buy last Thursday night to get me the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and dock and gave it to me for my birthday on Friday. I was playing with it all weekend, and so far, loving it! I was hoping to find something I could take on business trips instead of my laptop, so I needed a keyboard for typing notes and docs, but also wanted all the fun apps and media capabilities. I love that it can be a netbook with the keyboard dock or a tablet without it. I was looking at the Kindle Fire, and it looks pretty fun, but wouldn't have met all my needs (don't think it has bluetooth, so I couldn't have used a keyboard, which would mean I'd have to bring the laptop along, so nothing gained there), and he convinced me this was the way to go. We were also looking at the HP Touchpad, which he thought were good for the $$, but they are hard to find now. I'm so glad he talked me into spending just a little more and getting this computer. It's got great battery life too.

I bought a Pandigital 7 inch pad from Walmart about a week ago. It was supposed to be a present for X mas but our laptop broke down. I am very happy with it. It was on sale for $85. We have wireless in our house and the pad is working great. It has Android installed and we are able to download apps. I also added my own SD card. I haven't quite figured out how to download my pics and music yet but we also have an ipod touch. I saw this keyboard I can add on ebay but the on screen keyboard is fine for me right now.

My husband thought the same thing before we bought our fires, but he siad it was suprisingly easy to put things he didn't buy from Amazon on it. And even though you can't expand the internal memory, you can buy larger Cloud memory packages, so I don't think we'll have a problem with memory.
He got to try a Nook tablet and Kindle fire side by side at Best buy and we agreed that the Fire was easier for us to navigate. It is set up a lot liek our Iphones. The only thing that the Nook tablet offered that I really wish we had was a longer battery life. The Fire has been lasting 6-8 hours of continuous use, but I still end up having to plug it in by the end of the day. It has almost replaced my laptop.
