Looking at SSR with a critical eye.

Beca, you said it perfectly. Maybe you should forward your post on to DVC management! :thumbsup2

Again I still wonder if DVC took this direction to "take a step back and make it like OKW" because a lot of people were trading into OKW for the cheaper points and that is what DVC thought the people wanted.
Obviously none of us can speak for what DVC intended. My guess is that there were several factors. No Deluxe's they could add to easily, wanted something so they could keep DVC going and it was an easy way to recycle the DI at the members expense. Basically cheaper for Disney and possibly for DVC than EP would have been. IMO SSR has so much more potential than DVC has taken advantage of.

So I guess Eagle Pines is really not going to succeed with some of you - not near any theme park or any Disney attraction (not even DTD), condo environment, only golf as the attraction.
Nor is it likely to ever be built.

You forget the Disney Institute was there.
And failed.

You may not care about what people think about the resort you own, but believe me, there are many people who do!
And some of them can't deal with the fact that others don't like their resort or certain aspects of it. I know this doesn't apply to you but to some, it's like you insulted their children even if the criticism is right on. The fact that some are too thin skinned to allow others to express and opinion does not change anything.

Oh I am sure that is the case HERE on the boards. But we are just a very few skewed % of people that own at SSR.

Another reason I posted the poll on SSR, seems as though a lot has changed in a year since it was polled last.

Also - serious legit questions. Why is one of the items that makes SSR "good" and not "great" - or whatever - is the lack of room service when OKW doesn't have room service and there aren't any gripes on that?

Why is one of the other items that makes SSR "good" and not "great" is the lack of valet when OKW doesn't have it either and there aren't any gripes on that?

Why is one of the other items that makes SSR "good" and not "great" is the fact that it has exterior hallways when OKW has exterior hallways and there aren't any gripes on that?

Why is one of the other items that makes SSR "good" and not "great" is the lack of being close to a park when OKW isn't close to a park and there aren't any gripes on that?

Seriously, I am really trying to understand why its bad for SSR and not OKW. I would honestly appreciate an explanation. Is it because OKW was the first? Or is it because it requires fewer points so it can be tolerated for such cheap points? Would the complaints be there if SSR's points were on the same line as OKW? I just don't understand.

BRAVO: I could not have said it better.
I say to each his own. For those who love BWV, BCV and VWL good for you. You don't see the rest of us critisizing your choice of a vacation spot. I know lots of people sho spend theior vacations in a way that would not be enjoyable to me, but that's what makes the world go round.

Given that one of things that draws people to BCV is SAB, I'm very surprised they didn't build something similar at SSR. I'm not familiar with the layout of SSR but given they are still building there, is there still room to include a spectacular pool there? Something with a lazy river would be great -- similar to the one at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

It should improve sales at SSR if it had the best pool of all of the DVC resorts. If we couldn't hop to that pool it would probably entice many of us who do not own at SSR to try to get in there once in a while at the 7 month mark. And maybe it would relieve some of the contention for reservations at BCV.

Throw in a great table service restaurant with a fantastic breakfast buffet and SSR starts looking better and better.

Carneymom if you are happy with SSR, that is great. I am not happy nor do i think it is on par with the other DVC's.

I am also concerned that the HIGH DOLLARS I PAID for DVC may someday "pay" for me to stay at a resort (SSR) that simply put is a notch below what I was sold when i bought into the DVC concept.

These are fabulous ideas- especially for those of us not visiting the parks, who just want to relax and swim.

I agree that SSR has much to improve on. We pool hopped there once and stayed there once. The only theming at the pool is Donald, who is broke 1/2 of the time. I like to have poolside food offerings and would like to have a place to sit to eat the food that I purchased.

One of the other things that I noticed was that the people around the pool didn't seem to care. They left stuff laying around, exposed themselves (thongs just don't cut it at a family resort), etc. Maybe this was because they were renters, not sure.

I do not have any desire to ever stay at SSR again. If they made some changes, I might reconsider.

SSR is 40.98% of all on-site DVC rooms. 41%?!!!! So, the owners of all 4 other on-site DVC's make up 59%, and SSR owners make up 41%? That means that, outside of your 7 month window, the chances of staying somewhere besides SSR become VERY small...that makes the quality of SSR ALL of our "business". As someone who owns in a system that shares availability with that resort, but has been told that we can never stay there (by dh), that really messes with my vacation plans. I hate feeling like I can only book between 7-11 months out, and there is NO flexibility in my vacation days...it is pretty stressful.

WOW BECA!! 41% !!!!!!

Somehow 'big', 'really big', 'huge', and 'enormous' didn't get my attention, but 41% did!! With SSR having that percentage of the DVC rooms it really is all of our business and the resort should be at least on the same level as the rest.

Personally, I think the resort design could have been much better and I'm not sure how much they can make up for that after the fact and with the large addition of rooms.

Welcome aboard lisareniff, it is a major concern for many of us.

59% of us bought assuming all the DVC resorts would be of like quality.

They aren't......

Thanks guys for all of the thoughts. This post has run its course. Please put and end to it mods. :thumbsup2 My intention is to simply help make a better SSR for all and to create a resort that owners would be happy to stay at. People wouldn't be buying in to simply get into the system. They would be buying into a great resort that is the equal or better than the older DVC Resorts. Only time will tell but the jury is still out. I hope DVC is listening. The time I spent with this was never to start a bashing thread. It is going that way thus the end of the thread.

Thanks,

DAVE

Thanks for all the kind words!! (I have to admit...I went to lunch, and was really nervous coming back to read this post).

I would be very happy to fwd my post (or, for that matter this entire thread) to DVC management. If someone would be so kind as to post the email address, I will certainly get an email sent off to them.

IMO the SSR thread will be on the desk of a DVC big wig by Monday afteroon.

I believe that this board is the largest DVC discussion board on the WWW.

It would seem to me that DVC is very much aware of what is written here.

This is the reason i think it is so important that the 59% of us who don't own SSR but may be staying there some day hold DVC's feet to the fire when it comes to making SSR the best resort it can possibly be.

How does writing on a internet board help SSR become a better resort? And how are you making people who buy think that it is a great resort so they would want to stay there? If any thing you are doing the opposite. You don't make sense. Oh yea you do.... :stir:

The only email address in my Vacation Magic that didn't pertain to the newsletter itself was members@disneyvacationclub.com Not sure if that's the appropriate one or not! :confused3

I'm thinking a sky trolly from the heart of the resort with a drop off somewhere near Lego Land...or closer to Mouse Gear...hmmm -Steve
