Well, there are lots of other movies out there that's basically Romeo & Juliet &/or based off of Shakespeare.
West Side Story (Romeo & Juliet )
10 Things I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew)
O (Othello)
My Own Private Idaho (Henry IV)
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (Hamlet)
Forbidden Planet (The Tempest)
Kiss Me Kate (Taming of the Shrew)
Romeo Must Die (Romeo & Juliet)
And many more. :)

I want to see the movie because I love Disney and I love musicals. :)

And I will defend musicals forever. :goodvibes

I HATE West Side Story! The only other one in your list I've seen is 10 Things I Hate About You which I thought was relatively funny. I even bought the soundtrack and then bought a CD by Save Ferris.

Titanic by James Cameron is yet another rip off of Romeo and Juliet. I hate the love story but I am a major Titanic (the ship) buff so I love the movie. Just a little qruthie trivia so you all know what you are dealing with... :rotfl2: The first time I watched Titanic (and the only time in the theater which I'm sure other patrons who enjoyed the love story appreciated) I literally laughed out loud when Rose told Jacksicle she would never let go and then she immediately let go of him and let him sink. I also laughed when "Patink" hit the propeller. This is why I don't go out to see movies very often. :rotfl2: I did cry during Nearer My God to Thee so I guess I'm not completely heartless.

Anyway, I just don't appreciate the bard. My husband on the other hand just LOVES the bard and reads and rereads the plays just for fun. I will admit, the plays I've seen performed in the theater are much better than just reading the plays.

Now, the most important thing. I LOVE musicals! How many people do you know who own three different versions of the Show Boat soundtrack? How many people do you know who own the soundtrack from 110 in the Shade? I could go on but I think I've made my point. :rotfl2: This is why I was looking forward to seeing High School Musical. I'll probably watch it at some point but the Romeo and Juliet thing is a major disappointment.

Yay! Another musicals fan!
I don't really own many soundtracks, but I do own almost 600 movie musicals. :)
Including all 3 versions of Show Boat. ;)
All Fred & Ginger films, All the Broadway Melody films, Most Judy Garland, Eleanor Powell, Gene Kelly, Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, June Allyson, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Betty Grable, etc, etc, etc.

And as a musicals lover, you really should see Kiss Me Kate. :)
You can't go too wrong with the likes of Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Ann Miller & Bob Fosse in the film.

I may have to break down and see Kiss Me Kate! That sounds like an awesome cast!

I sing Judy Garland songs all the time. I worked for a man whose father had worked for Walt Disney. That sounds pretty cool in itself but one time his parents were asked out but they didn't have someone to watch the kids. So... Judy Garland offered to stay behind and babysit for them. How many people can go around saying that Judy Garland babysat them when they were a kid? I found all this out because I caught him singing For Me and My Gal and started talking about how I like Judy Garland! :goodvibes

I listen to a lot of show tunes that aren't necessarily from a soundtrack. I generally like what Mandy Patinkin does with songs. I have a couple of Patti LuPone cds that are okay overall. I bought them because I like her version of "Anything Goes" (I have the soundtrack to that one also).

Time for a confession... My absolute favorite thing in ALL of Walt Disney World is the finale to The Great Movie Ride. When the footage changes from black and white to the Showboat scene always brings a smile to my face! :teeth:

I apologize in advance to any people who are Andrew Lloyd Webber fans. Try this for yourself. Watch a movie of one of his musicals but sing the soundtrack to another of his musicals. For example, I was singing Jesus Christ Superstar to Phantom of the Opera when my husband was watching it. My husband even started doing it because the songs were so similar. :thumbsup2

Singing in the Rain is the best of the musicals,IMO

That's definitely a great musical. I really like the title song, even the version Taco did in the early 1980s. But, if you have seen A Clockwork Orange the song brings out a whole different set of images!

"I'm singing in the rain" - kick - "just singing in the rain" - punch -

This was so funny - I laughed out loud, truly. "Jacksicle" was the best! Thanks for the giggles.

Yep. I love Singin in the Rain!
*Shudders at the memory of seeing A Clockwork Orange*
Piece of garbage IMO.

Anyways, the title song was first sung in the movie "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" by a whole chorus of huge movie stars (pretty much all of MGM's stable at the time). And it was also in several other movies between these two films. Including being sung by Judy Garland in "Little Nellie Kelly".
Another song, "You Were Meant For Me" also was featured in both films. All in all, only 2 songs were actually written for the film and one had the melody "borrowed" from Cole Porter. Not a bad film for being written around the music. :p
By the way, Hollywood Revue featured a yet to be Disney star in the cast. Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards who was the voice of Jiminy Cricket. :)

This is so funny! I am such a musical fan! Love them! But have never seen high school musical. I guess I'll see it soon.

It's a very upsetting movie but is an interesting social commentary. You have a horrible person terrorizing innocent people in the most violent ways. He gets caught and is reprogrammed to be non-violent through the use of aversion therapy. He becomes physically ill when he hears his beloved Ludwig van Beethoven. In the end it is determined that this reprogeramming is essentially cruel and inhuman punishment so they program Mr. Violent back to his original self. Very interesting stuff to me, which is worse, using unethical methods to reprogram a violent person or letting that violent person continue to terrorize others?

That said, the movie is EXTREMELY violent and I don't recommend it for anyone under the age of 18. Most people I know were exposed to the movie when they were in college. Cteddiesgirl's shudder is a mild reaction. I'll stick my neck out and say my reaction is more like horror and disgust and the feeling I'm going to vomit.

The best part about the movie to me is the soundtrack. It's mostly music by Beethoven but done on a synthesizer. The synthesized music is played by Walter Carlos who later became Wendy Carlos. Walter/Wendy did some very interesting things with music by Bach too - Switched on Bach for example. I think I have all of Walter/Wendy's music.
