Long hair over 40.

I see nothing wrong with long hair no matter how old you are. If you like it , that's all that matters. Not what anyone else thinks. I cut mine as I just wanted change.

I'm 53 and my hair is long...touching my bra strap in the back; layered around my face. My avatar pic shows me, but I have sunglasses on top of my head.
I'm tall and plus size, and I always felt like if I cut my hair short I would be uncomfortable. Ok, yes, I hide behind my hair. :rotfl2:
I just never liked short hair on myself, and will probably be one of those old grannies with the long silver braid. :goodvibes

I'm 58 and don't remember the last time I cut my hair (I think it was in my 20s!) I trim it but don't really cut it. It's down to my shoulder blades and I mostly wear it in a pony tail nowadays. I asked my son just yesterday if I did cut it how do you think I should style it?

All he said was Queen Latifah...:confused3 He loves her AND her hair. He had to show me an example because I've seen her hair in many ways. He showed me this:

Now to get the nerve to try it!!

I'm 43 and have had long hair for most of my life (minus a short cut after DS#2).

I like it long, always have - but not really really long. I'm being brave and posting a pic of me below, after I had a blow-out and my hair is pushed up over my shoulders, and curled a bit, but it's long - it's already grown about 3 inches since this pic from March. Sorry the pic may be big:

My mother is 73. She wears her hair just above her shoulders. I am 52 and I wear mine just a bit longer. I usually get it cut 2-3 times a year, so at times it's pretty long. (It grows fast).

OP, you can wear your hair however you feel it looks best. Not everyone is cut out for a short style.

Great pic. I love your hair!

OP, wear your hair however you want it. Those old rules don't apply anymore.

Just do what makes you happy!

41 and my long hair is not going anywhere! I love it.

Hillbeans, I love your hairstyle.

I just hit the big 47 and MIL (not my biggest fan) asked DH if I was going to cut my hair. It hits mid back and is styled close to Marie Osmond or Valerie Bertaneli. It is very thick and wavy and I consider it my best feature. I love that it only takes a few minutes to style and I also like that I can wear it many different ways. I started noticing that most of the women I work with cut their hair short when they have kids, I did not but I wore a lot more pony tails. Do you think long hair is somehow wrong after 40. P.S. I do get compliments all the time on my hair.

Is there an age you consider to old for long hair?

My mother had lovely long hair until just before she died at 74.

Still too traumatized by the Dorothy Hamill cut my mother forced on me as child. Love my long hair and am not planning on cutting it anytime soon.

Also over 40 (50 +8 lol) & also long hair. I just cut my middle of my back length hair, to a collarbone length bob - I won't go shorter, I don't like the look of short hair on me. Funny.. It's never occurred to me to associate the length of my hair with the number on my birth certificate ;) I love the way beautiful healthy gray hair looks at a longer length when it's cut in a flattering way. I'm hoping to work with my colourist over the next year to find the perfect gray to enhance my colouring. :)

LOL! Me too!:rotfl:
Actually, my mother and I both got them when I was in 4th grade and we HATED them.
I will cut my hair to just above my shoulders periodically, but that's as short as I'm going! (I'm 42)

I am so with you on that! I went from sitting on my hair to a pixie cut in 30 minutes and not by my choice when I was 7. Literally 40 years later and it still ticks me off that my mom did that. I cried for days.

Oh I hated that cut! My hair was really long then too and boy did I cry after the fact. I vowed never again will I cut it short.

I am over 40 (quite over, but shhh, not telling!!) and I have long hair. I also, as others said, had a mother who thought short hair was easier to care for so I always had short hair as a child and HATED HATED it!!!! I vowed I would never have it as an adult. I love my hair and would never cut it. I find it easy to care for and can put it up when I want to. I think whatever you want to do it fine. No rules anymore!

I'll be 40 next week. I've always had long layered hair, and it's always been thick and pretty-- like Kate Middleton.

Over the past year though, it started not looking as good. It seemed stringier and just not as full, it was aging me. So I cut it to just below my shoulders. I like it now, and it's still longish without being stringy.

I just think as long as it looks youthful and healthy, fine, but you've got to be objective and know when it's time to let go!

It depends on the style and texture of the hair. Long, dull, frizzy and limp hair isn't attractive on anyone at any age.

Superlong hair, IMO, ist not attractive on anyone. Like this:

This one looks awesome!

I also don't think long hair parted in the middle is a good look either.

Robin, if Queen Latifah is too short, this one is longer and so beautiful.

I'm surprised that your husband would pass that opinion from his mother on to you. It seems rather passive aggressive to me. Maybe your husband wants you to cut it?

Since you obviously love your hair and think it looks great why even question it here?

My 80yo grandmother had very, very long hair. She wore it in a beautiful bun. I loved brushing it out for her at night. I had long hair until age 56 when I ended up in the hospital for a long stay with no way to wash my hair. I can't stand it dirty. I called my stylist and had her come to the hospital where she cut my hair Twiggy short. That way, all I needed was a washcloth with a bowl of warm water and a tiny bit of shampoo. Now, I wear it short and love it. My hair was long from age 14 to 56. I have absolutely no long hair prejudice. Everyone should wear their hair as they choose.

I agree with someone who earlier said a lot of women cut their hair when they have kids. Well, I considered it briefly after I had my second (I was just on the south side of 40) and decided to try out some short styles on one of those "makeover" programs I found in a Google search. I looked like a young boy, with lipstick and mascara. I was not a fan, even after trying several different short styles and a few different colors. I also think it would take more time to style short hair - my long hair is easy to do several different things with.

Now my only dilemma is whether to get side-swept bangs again or to keep it all one length.
