I just hit the big 47 and MIL (not my biggest fan) asked DH if I was going to cut my hair. It hits mid back and is styled close to Marie Osmond or Valerie Bertaneli. It is very thick and wavy and I consider it my best feature. I love that it only takes a few minutes to style and I also like that I can wear it many different ways. I started noticing that most of the women I work with cut their hair short when they have kids, I did not but I wore a lot more pony tails. Do you think long hair is somehow wrong after 40. P.S. I do get compliments all the time on my hair.

Is there an age you consider to old for long hair?

I'm turning 46 this year and right now my hair is to my mid back-- just below my bra strap- with layers. I don't plan on getting it cut anytime soon (except for trims). I've been growing it out about 2 years now. My hair is natually wavy but I can easily straighten it. Today I'm wearing it wavy. I change up hair styles often but can't find anything I really like right now.

It's your hair, wear however you want.

I believe in doing what makes me happy rather than what others think I should do.

This is a hot topic on the dis that pops up every 6 months or so.

As long as your hair looks full and healthy, there is no reason to cut it. That over 40 rule expired long ago.

I'm going to be 48 and have very long (almost down to my tush!), thick hair. I do not plan on cutting it short anytime soon :).

I don't think it matters how old a woman is if she has long hair. If she likes it, that's all that matters. :)

I'm 41 (today actually), & my hair is blonde & in between my shoulders & bra strap - kinda mid-longish?

Right now, it's in a pony tail, because it's hot outside!

I think, as long as your hair is maintained (styled) & still flattering, long hair is fine at any age!

I was just thinking about this the other day. My hair is very thin, so I've had it short for the last 20 yrs. But if I had thick hair, I'd consider having it long (I'm 48).

Long hair on older women can go either way. If it is well-cared for, styled n a flattering manner, and not bleached to wires it can look very nice. I see waaaay too many older women who have long, thin, stringy, washed out or bleached out hair that makes them look "witchy", IMO. Maybe they don't really see themselves objectively when they look in the mirror. :confused3 Long hair that is allowed to go untrimmed develops the worst split ends, which only further accentuates the "witchy" look.

I say if you like it and can pull it off keep the long hair. The hair color doesn't even matter to me. I love the look of naturally graying hair and it can look very nice if it is styled well. Not so much if it is allowed to go to seed (see: witchy)

I have always wished I could keep my hair long. I did have it long in high school through my 20s. My hair is very fine and thin, so it just lays flat against my scalp unless I use a LOT of product. My hair is short and silvery-light brown now. Growing it out below my shoulders is not going to happen because I know how bad it would look. I don't want to scare small children.

I hadn't seen a thread on this before, sorry to bring up an old topic.

I agree on the stringy witchy hair, I also believe that stringy witchy hair has no age boundaries. I see it on younger girls all the time.

I've heard it said that if your face starts to sag as you age, then having long hair will make your face look droopy. That's my only concern about long hair. I'm going to be 52 in October and my hair is long, mainly because it grows fast and I'm too cheap and lazy to maintain a short cut. I've had it very short at times and had to trim it every 4-5 weeks. Just couldn't be bothered with that!

Im 47 and have midback hair that I french braid every day. I'm keeping it as long as I can because its so easy.

I'm 61 and have long hair. I used to think short hair would be so much easier but found I had to do more! Now I just wash it and I can either let it air dry or if I want more "poof" I can blow dry it. (I'm in the below signature picture).

I'm almost 50 and have long hair to mid-back. Glad it's not frowned upon anymore! I have zero plans to ever cut it - I feel much more feminine with long hair than short.

I agree that you should wear your hair however you like it!
But....just yesterday, a woman I know that had long hair, got it cut shoulder length. I also think she had it colored. She truly looked 10-15 years younger! I almost didn't recognize her!

Happy birthday!

Thank you!! :)

I agree! The funny thing is, DH used to prefer shorter hair, so I actually used to wear my hair a little shorter - usually somewhere between chin length & shoulder length & then it gradually grew out. However, for the last year or so, I've started wearing it longer. 2 weeks ago I had a hair appointment, & DH asked, "You're not getting too much cut off are you?" When I told him that I hadn't planned to, he replied, "Good. I like watching your hair bounce around in a ponytail when you run." ;)

A well executed pony tail can make you look like you had a mini face lift. Try it.

I also wear hair pieces and I have a couple shorter ones, DH swears they make me look older, needless to say I don't wear those.
