We have not flown in 7 years, and I have heard different things about securing your luggage with the new security measures in place. Do you still lock your suitcases? What tips or suggestions could you give me for packing for my family with 2 little ones? Thanks in advance.

You can lock your bags if you use specific locks that TSA can open. You can buy them on-line, travel stores, and airports.

Getting through airport security is among the most stressful part of our trips.

If you are carrying on any liquid toiletries, you have to put them in a clear quart baggie and each item has to be under 3 ounces. I put some make up items in it and my hand sanitizer. I keep it the baggie in an outside pocket so that I can grab it easily to put it in the security check point bin.

I also do things to help speed things up, like take off items that may set off the metal detector before we reach our turn(my belt buckle or costume jewelry) and it is easier for me to wear slip on shoes, because some airports require even tennies to be removed.

Plan on buying water or soda after your security screening so that you don't have to throw any away. You can bring on any food or drink from inside the airport. With kids it's a good idea to grab water or juice before you board because it often is awhile before the inflight service reaches you.

Hope this helps!
Good luck!

I was told always, put your shoes on top soles up. We zip tie our bags that is it or you can use special TSA locks. If they need to get into your bag & they can't they will just cut the lock off. And there is a paper in your suitcase if it was searched.

Don't put any meds or any electronics/computers in your checked baggage -- big theft risks. Also do not put film in your checked baggage, as the stronger x-rays used in the bag rooms will fog it.

Airlines are currently enforcing weight limits for checked baggage -- check your airline's website to get the most current information on limits just before you go.

I beleive that the current rules require that all shoes must be removed at all US airports. People have reported that this includes show on babes in arms. The only exception is for medical necessity.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

I have a question about the locks that are approved by security. When I am looking for them in a store or online, will they say "approved by ..." ?

I'd suggest checking out the TSA guidelines online. Sorry, I don't have the link available but I know I followed one from my airline's website. There are exceptions to the 3-1-1 ziploc bag rule, such as for prescription meds, saline solution, etc. It's best to review them for yourself as you may have specific circumstances that others are not addressing. And remember, each one in your party is allowed a ziploc bag, so anything that doesn't fit in yours might be able to fit into one of your children's.

Personally, I find it trying to get through security with two children even though they are older. DH wears leg braces and is taken away for an indepth exam and I'm left to overlook his stuff as well as my kids' and mine, and keep an eye on my kids. The 3-1-1 rule isn't difficult just different and something new to get used to.

They will say something to that effect on the package. However, there is a VERY quick visual item to look for. All approved locks have a red symbol on the locks themselves that identify them as TSA approved locks. You can see the symbol here: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/locks.shtm

You don't have to go to a specialty store to find them... I got my last ones at Wal-Mart. Any store that carries luggage will have them for sale: Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, etc. If it says "TSA Approved" on the packaging, you're all set. If you really want to be sure, look at the key hole and if it has printed on it "TSA" and then a number (tells the TSA agent which key will open it), it's safe.

Thank you all so much for your information about securing our bags. I just picked up some of these locks with the "TSA Approved" stamp on them. The brand was American tourister, and they cost $5.92 each. Thanks again!
